1966 Ford Mustang Convertible 289 V-8, Challenger Special engine, Cruise-a-matic automatic transmission Power steering! New ‘Racing Red’ Paint! White Grand Touring Accent Stripe! OEM Factory Grand Torturing styled steel wheels! White letter radial tires! White top! Beautiful car that runs better than it looks!!!!! You can dependably drive this car anywhere! The Ford Mustang is A,erica’s most popular sports car. The first production Ford Mustang, a white convertible with black interior, rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan on March 9, 1964. It was later introduced to the North American public as a 1965 model both at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964 and via all three American television networks on April 19 that year by the Ford Motor Company. It was the most successful product launch in automotive history, setting off near-pandemonium at Ford dealers across the continent. The original Mustang is considered to be the first pony car, and inspired many imitators. Collectors and Automotive enthusiasts see the Ford Mustang as an “Iconic” symbol of American history and lifestyle. It’s styling and performance has said to have inspired a lifestyle this lifestyle is still embraced today. To own a classic mustang is to own a classic piece of Americana. It is not your ordinary collector car! While some collector cars have declined in value during the slowing of the economy, mustangs, especially the early convertibles continue to go up in value. Their appeal transcends beyond North America and international collectors of Americana frequently seek them after. Not wanting to “mess” with a good thing, overall design for the 1966 model year Mustang basically unchanged. To comply with federally mandated safety standards, Mustangs now included front and rear seat belts, padded dash, emergency flashers, electric wipers and windshield washers as standard equipment. The dash was redesigned so that it no longer resembled Falcon dashes. The horse emblem in the grille now “floated” with the horizontal and vertical support bars removed. HENRY FORD “The man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed. “…..Henry Ford I have been in the classic car hobby for over 30 years, and through those years I have had the pleasure of owning, restoring, driving, and ultimately selling almost every model of ford mustang from 1964 1/2 to 1970. Ultimately I keep going back to the 1964-1966 model convertibles as I find them splendid road cars as well as examples of Americana art! I always pay creedence to the above quote by Mr. Henry Ford, Irefer to call his quote a "value statement ". I believe its these values that have made Ford successfull these many years. I have always been value conscious when buying a classic mustang. The same goes When it comes time to sell one of my cars. It is my hope that the buyer sees the value of car, reflective on the current and future market prices. This particular mustang convertible up for auction today is one of those cars! It came to my attention about three years ago. The car was advertised in a local newspaper as recently restored and “cute as a bug”. I developed a friendly dialog with the seller ,over severaly emails and phone calls understanding all the work which was done to the car to make it road worthy.. (see some photos of car under restoration and after) . The previous owner had repaired torque boxes, frame rails , inner rockers and trunk floor and raills along with outer wheel housings . He indicated he put new rust free doors on the car and lower repair panels on both rear quarters.. He said the driveline in the car was “real snappy” and that he was looking at selling due to being cautionary that his wife was going to get many speeding tickets I continued my dialog with the seller (by this time we were on a first name basis) calling him shortly before Christmas two years ago to wish him a happy holiday. He said that he was wanting to get a new pickup truck ( Ford of course) and that he could give me a really good deal. I told him I would think about it and get back to him. I called him three weeks later to complete the deal and he told me he had sold the stang. I felt bad because I thought it would be a great car for the price he was asking for it. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I knew add-on’s were readily available and I could personalize it , or change the appearance to what I wanted. Another year passes and I see a red mustang for sale in another classified ad in a different town, but immediately I know it’s the same car after reading the description. I made a phone call and bought the car on the spot, as I was knowledgeable about the work that had been done, and maintenance and care by the prior owner. so that’s the story of the acquistion of the red mustang. I have added some of my personal preferences to the car. Color has been changed to a special formula we call "racing red" ..its about as red as you can get without being orange. The engine compartment has been detailed and an chrome appearance kit has been added. The engine is one of the “best” running motors I have ever found in a mustang and is indeed “snappy” with plenty of punch through all power bands. The factory cruise-a –matic transmission shifts smoothly through all gears. The t ransmission had a slight leak from front secondary seal, which has been professionally repaired. The car s power steering is tight and agile with no slop or flop in the steering. The ford power steering units from the sixties allow you to steer the car literally with one finger. The car stops well with no pull to either side or noises. Brakes are drum and indeed have a different feel than a new car of today…but they are functional and practical, and you can probably put pads on yourself! The exhaust is quiet, yet with a slight throaty sound. This is a single exhaust as was on the car when it was produced. The white letter tires are almost new and the car sports a set of OEM (original equipment manufactured) grand touring (GT) styled steel wheels. These, combined with the white grand tourning stripe give the car a stunning muscle car appearance typically only found with the high-dollar Shelbys. The black interior is exceptional and luxurious with new front seat covers, door panels, arm rests, and instrument bezel all being new. The carpet shows a little wear (see photos) but is still very presentable and functional The am radio works and two speakers have been added to rear quarter interior trim to enhance the sound. If you notice you will see the little plastic maintanence record holder on the dash. This would tell me that reqular and required maintanence was top of mind with the early owner of this car. (This is what they used before the days of on board electronics and computers) The top mechanism of this car is manual, (as opposed to a power top) and is easy to put up and down. The color of the top is white and the top dpes not leak. there are no holes or tears in the fabric. there is a small patch sewn in on the passenter lower corner. ( I surmise this initial damage was done by not indenting the lower inner fender to accomadate top upon replacement, all replacements require modification to work for convertibles). I have a new top and rear window that I can include with the car if the winning bidder desires. The top does not need replacement and is comepletely functional and presentatble as is. Bottom line is this ! This is a highly desired and collectable classic car, called iconic in American History , that is being offered at a very modest reserve.
