1937 Packard Formal Sedan Super Eight PACKARDS! PACKARDS! PACKARDS! It is hard to find anybody that doesn’t fall in love with the Packard automobile. The last of the classic Packards were manufactured from 1935 to 1940. Most people agree that this is the last era of the true Packard classic designs. Within these years the most desirable body styles are the Phaetons and convertible coupes and for enclosed cars of course the most desirable is the Formal Sedan. The Packard came in two versions of the eight cylinder – the standard eight and the super eight. The Super Eight was the top of the line eight cylinder Packard and this combined with the formal sedan gives you one of the most enjoyable touring cars of any make of the pre-war classics. 1937 was also the first year for independent front suspension on Packards and made a world of difference for handling and high-speed touring. This one change alone gave it a riding quality that has never been surpassed even in modern Rolls. The mechanical brakes with booster had been abandoned in favor of complete hydraulic brake system. The padded top on the Formal Sedan gave the privacy of a limousine but the informality of the 4-door sedan. As the world famous collector Walter Goodman said back in the 1980’s, the worst seat in the house in a limousine is a chauffeur’s seat but the best seat in the house in the Formal Sedan is the driver’s seat. The car that you see before you is an estate car. The deceased owned the car for over 30 years. The car was kept in top running condition and was used in many major tours. The trunk pictured in some of the photos does come with the car. The car was used by the family for weddings and proms and important family occasions. Unfortunately at the time of placing the ad we did not have the mileage but will be posting this shortly. We therefore used a zero mileage in the required slot in the eBay ad until we can get the actual mileage to post. As you can see in the pictures the car has not been prepped for any glamour shots nor were any taken. The photos are of the car, as it exists since the passing of the owner. It can be assumed that the car will need a tune up and to be looked at to be sure that it is fully prepared to continue life in motor touring. The family tells us that the car seemed to love to be on the road and was virtually trouble free. From our discussions with the children of the deceased it appears that the car should have all its basic components in excellent condition that would indicate that it can easily be prepared for touring or some upgrading in the cosmetics. That being said the car is being priced with a reserve that would reflect the fact that it has not been on the road for a few years and not every question can be answered with certainty. The daughter said the family left all the mechanical maintenance of the car fully to their father and their job was only to enjoy riding in the car. The following information has been taken from the book, Packard by George H. Dammann & James A. Wrem, Living up to its name of Formal Sedan was this Super Eight Body No. 1012. With a price tag of $3,235, it was the most expensive production model in the series. Standard equipment included a top and rear quarters covered in fine-grain landau leather. Large blind rear quarters added a measure of privacy for the passengers, and a touch of class for the overall design. Sidemounts were optional, but usually were found on this model. This view gives a look at the added slant that was given to the radiator. Also of new design were the front and rear bumpers. Just ask a Packard collector knowledgeable in late pre-war Packards and they will tell you the 1937 Packard Formal Sedan is the best looking, best touring Packard you can find. There is no warranty implied or otherwise. Car is sold as is, where is and shown. PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING!
