I am an Ivy League graduate. I am in my mid-30s. I am a serious fellow, and I've been on the national and local TV news giving unpaid and unsolicited financial market commentary; also been in major national newspapers and magazines doing the same. Most recently, I was quoted in A A R P magazine. Before that my opinion was on C N N and M S N B C. In terms of this auction, what does that mean? It means I am not going to jeopardize my reputation because of this VW Bus. There is nothing being hidden about this Volkswagen, as so many people do with auctions and car ads. In fact, I go FAR out of my way so that you can view with your own eyes the bus on which you are bidding. You don't get 100% positive feedback over 11 years of registration by hiding things. If there is something you should know about the VW of which I am aware, it's available to you in the auction. You have photos in the auction of every imaginable angle, with flash and without to show as many details as possible. In doing this you have you to rely as little as possible on my "interpretation" of characteristics of the bus -- instead you can draw your own conclusions from what you see. I also go out of my way to make sure people are satisfied. I work hard to make sure I get specific positive feedback comments; I don't take it lightly, and it means a tremendous amount to me. I look forward to getting to know you if you'd like me to (or if you'd like to buy the Samba Bus without me getting to know you, that's OK too!)! I will go out of my way to be helpful to you if need be. Please get in touch with any special requests which I may reasonably be able to accommodate and I will happily try. Use the combination of the photos, videos and text for full disclosure, with more emphasis on the photos and videos as the description is definitely not intended to be exhaustive. As eBay says, a single picture is worth a thousand words. eBay strongly recommends the best practice of providing as many photos as possible and letting the photos do the talking, rather than trying to describe in words what can already be seen in a photo or trying to recreate in words what already is in provided photos. I have been registered on eBay for 11 years (it will be 12 years this December) and I have 100% positive feedback. Any questions, please message me through the eBay messaging system, and I will answer promptly, or you can call me at (Five-Six-One) Three-76-Two-Two-Seven-Nine. I write the telephone number like that to avoid getting computer-generated marketing calls. AUCTION RULES: Full payment is due within within 7 calendar days of auction ending by either cash in-person or bank wire only. (Once you receive a fraudulent cashier's check from a buyer, you'll never accept another one either!) Pickup is also due within 14 calendar days, and may not occur until funds have cleared. Storage for the first 14 days is FREE. There is a storage charge of $350/week beyond 14 days, and is limited to 2 extra weeks (for a total of 4 weeks of storage). The time limits and fees are strictly enforced. You must read the entire auction description, follow the rules, and study each picture and video fully. I do not offer any kind of a warranty on anything that I sell ever, as a matter of personal philosophy -- naturally this nearly 45 year old VW bus is As Is with no warranty. You get the VW as pictured, captured in the video, and described, a clean a clear Florida title, and 2 keys. The hundreds of photographs I took and the video I produced are not finished uploading yet...that will take hours. I will post both the photo slide show and video in revision updates to the auction description, so check back later. Despite the large number of photos and long video, I want to point out a few things in words. The bus goes into reverse, 1st and 2nd gear without issue. And you can move the bus around and obviously drive it as I do in the video. I can't get the bus into 3rd and 4th gear because I can't find them in the shift pattern. The shifter feels rather loose and you can spin its shaft, which tends to spin as you move it rightward then upward as you would toward normally to get it into 3rd gear. That spinning makes it impossible to get into 3rd. And the same thing happens with 4th...the shift lever spins the opposite direction in your hand so frustratingly you can't position it where you'd want to in order to get it into 4th gear. If I could prevent it from spinning by, say, using a pair of vise grips in one hand on the shaft and the other hand on the shift knob then maybe that would allow it to shift into 3rd and 4th gear. However I never tried that and can't guarantee that workaround would work. Additionally, there is "positive camber" on the rear wheels (bottom of wheels pointing toward center of the vehicle). I have been told this is fixed with a camber adjustment that takes a person unfamiliar with the job less than a day to correct with no unusual tools. The white plastic trash bags in the rear compartment have several unused bags of Quick Crete concrete mix in them. Those actually come with the VW bus because my back is now injured and I can't lift them without injuring myself. I loaded them in there, and then I ended up just leaving them there because they had a nice effect of temporarily "correcting" the positive camber to some degree. The carburetor in the bus needs to be rebuilt. Sometimes it idles high, sometimes it idles low. Sometimes it stalls. The plugs, wires, air filter and alternator-fan belt have not been replaced in years and are way overdue to be done. The engine doesn't leak oil such that it would leave a puddle on the ground. Unless you would be willing to drive a nearly 45 year old unrestored VW bus home in 2nd gear with old tires in the front, I would not recommend driving it home from here. By the way, the rear tires are nearly brand new...just a few weeks old, Goodyear brand. You can have a copy of the receipt for them if you like. If I were you, and I had to get it home because I were the winning bidder, here's what I would do: I would have it transported by an auto shipping company or rent a truck and trailer (let's say from a rental place we all know that rhymes with "goo-haul," you're not supposed to write a brand name on eBay for something that you don't actually have up for auction). It would be much safer to trailer it than drive it, especially considering the front tires are old bias plies. Additionally the wipers, brake lights, running lights, and turn signals are not working (although the headlights are working), so you'd only be able to drive during the day using hand signals and while it was not raining. My zip code is 33414. Wellington is in South Florida, near West Palm, and 1.3 hours from Miami. If you want to fly in, I can pick you up from PBI (West Palm Beach International Airport) and go to the rental super center with you so you can get a truck-trailer combination. You can also drive in with your own tow vehicle, like a pickup truck or SUV, and rent just the trailer at the rental place. I can also coordinate transport for you. I know of a couple decent brokers. eBay also recommends a few transport brokers. For emphasis, please closely examine all photographs and carefully watch the whole video and read all the rules before bidding, which is a commitment to purchase this Samba bus if you should win. This is a NO RESERVE auction. Any time you click the "Confirm Bid" button, you may very well end up winning this VW Bus, regardless of what you've bid -- there is no minimum the bid has to reach for the auction to end successfully, and I am also obligated to sell it no matter how low or high the bidding ends up, whether it's $20 or $1,000,000. Lastly I need 24 hours notice before you or your transport company show up to get the bus. It is in a climate-controlled, locked and secured garage. No one can gain access it to it without me or one of my family members granting access to whoever will be picking it up, whether you or a transport company driver. The title is in clean and clear, in my name and in my possession, with my correct address on it. I looked at the title today; it is in-hand... If in addition to receiving the title you would also like a Bill of Sale when you purchase the bus, you may have one and you may also have a photocopy of my driver's license if you'd like. The pop top canvas is not present. The spring assemblies are present but are attached to neither the pop top or the bus top...they are squeezed down and in position so they will not move. However, if you remove the 4 hold-down straps that are part of the Westfalia assembly, and you don't hold the pop top, it will eject the top in to the air, so don't do that! The engine in this bus is not the original and I don't know the displacement or model of the engine. The fuel gauge is not working and I don't remember how much fuel is in the tank. I added 1 gallon of fuel recently. However the majority of the fuel in the tank is very old. The old fuel is now mixed with 1 gallon of fresh fuel. You should really fill it up so you're aware of exactly what it has in it and it at least dilutes the old fuel in there, however the best situation would be to drain the old fuel out and start anew with completely fresh gasoline. The engine has a 12-volt alternator. The VW emblem (i.e., "lollipop" emblem) on the nose and the "VOLKSWAGEN" emblem on the rear hatch are in flawless showroom condition. The hub caps are in equally immaculate condition. There is one dime-sized dink on one of them that is hardly noticeable. The bus paint (both red and white) is not very glossy and has been applied in a fashion that shows brush strokes and drips, although strangely the quality of the paint product itself looks decent. It's nice that it keeps it from rusting while you work on the bus though. The AM radio is a VW bus period correct and VW Bus correct Bendix brand AM-only band model. VW dealers in this era installed a number of brands of various dealer-installed options. Although this is a bone of contention among enthusiasts who sometimes will say this or that accessory was "only" a particular brand...they used Motorolas for radios as well, for example. The radio is not connected. The cigarette lighter is not connected either. The odometer is not working nor are the instrument lights. The spare tire/wheel are present. The spare is not inflated and I have not attempted to do so. The jack and lug wrench are not present. The seats are believed all to be original and holding up well after nearly 45 years! OK, that's all for now, and please contact me via the eBay messaging system or at the telephone number above in the auction description if I haven't covered something you'd like to know.On Jul-01-11 at 13:06:41 PDT, seller added the following information: I am providing you with this approximately 19-minute long video. In the first half I demonstrate a totally cold-start and describe some important facts about this bus. In the second half I do a road test. The entire video has important information in it for you, so you should watch the whole thing. I am not an expert video-maker, but I did my best...some of the captions I wrote are inadvertently cut off, but nothing essential can't be seen. I exceeded my technical ability in trying to use two cameras for two different angles to make the video more interesting -- the sound isn't quite as good on one of the angles. A part you can't hear is when I get outside to the camera again just after starting the engine...in case you are curious, the summary of what I said in that inaudible 5-second segment was that you can hear for yourself that the engine was running smoothly. On Jul-01-11 at 19:43:36 PDT, seller added the following information: The front license plate (German) and rear license plate (1967-68 Florida plate) are both included with the auction, as mounted and pictured. You will receive the Westfalia bus with them mounted, as pictured. The following slideshow automatically displays only the first 100 of the more than 300 available pictures. To view the remainder of them, and to be able to zoom in, etc., right-click near the bottom of slideshow window where it says "View all" and select "Open link in new window" or "Open link in new tab." That will keep this auction page open while you are viewing the pictures in a separate web browser window or tab: On Jul-04-11 at 15:39:54 PDT, seller added the following information: A self-proclaimed VW Bus expert who says he worked in a VW factory in the 60s and 70s told me that he could tell in the video that I was in fact in 3rd and 4th gear briefly in the video. I think he might have been right, at least for 3rd gear, but I would rather have someone be pleasantly surprised that the other gears basically work. I always under sell (not really intentionally but rather I just tend to point out flaws that I see or feel or perceive whereas others may omit them), and try to have the product in question (in this case, a vehicle) exceed the buyer's expectations. On Jul-05-11 at 12:47:02 PDT, seller added the following information: Depending on which web browser you are using to view this auction (Fire fox, explorer, chrome, etc.) there could be a very large white space immediately below the Photo Bucket album immediately below this text. If you do have that white space you may not be aware there are more pictures to be seen. Be sure to scroll ALL the way down...as much as 15 inches down through totally blank white space to get to the 24 eBay hosted MAIN pictures for the auction. Scroll all the way down...way, way down...until you can't scroll down any more, to get all the way to the bottom of the auction. Then you will see the 24 main pictures.
