Vehicle Detail
You are looking at a lovingly restored 1970 MGB Split Bumper Convertible. It has 82,000 miles and was originally an Oklahoma car. This is the only year MG did the rare two piece bumper known as the Split Bumper. Its an amazing looking car and photos just don't do it justice. I have listed everything I would want to know about this car so forgive the long description. I want its new owner to be happy and I want to show what went into this car so you can give a fair bid. Body – The car sits in a modern match of the original Midnight Blue color. I think it is called "Blue Royale." It was one of the most rust free classics I have ever seen. I assume this is due to it being a convertible and only driven on nice days. It also came with a licence plate from 1987 so it likely sat for many years. The solid body got 3 coats of Sherwin William’s basecoat and 3 coats of clear. It was carefully sanded and buffed to a mirror finish. It has its original floor boards and rockers which are solid. Both interior floors and entire undercarriage were cleaned and sprayed with semi-gloss Black Enamel, top and bottom for a good seal (sprayed with a gun, not cheap rattle cans). You could eat off the underside of this car it is so clean. The trunk area and underside of the deck-lid and hood has been properly painted the same body color. It has a new windshield from Victoria British to include new seals (big project). The body also has new door seals, weather strip, window felts, etc. It also has a new metal MGB emblem on the trunk and a new chrome filler cap (Moss). It has new six-piece chrome side molding around the whole car. Interior – The Interior has been completely re-done to include new Moss OEM seat covers, new carpet and jute padding, new center console pad, new door panels (both from Moss), newly covered top rails, new sun-visors, new seatbelts (Moss) and a crack-free dash taken from a 1971 donor car. This is not the cheap dash-cap but the whole dash. The instruments were all taken out, disassembled, cleaned and carefully put back into the dash upon install. It has a brand new EZ-On vinyl top with clean poly glass which lays over a re-finished grey convertible frame. The interior smells like fresh vinyl. Mechanical – The engine runs good with new exhaust (not OEM), new plugs, new wires, new points, cap and rotor, new coil and fresh fluids all sitting in a carefully detailed engine compartment. The 1800cc high compression motor still has a lot of zip to it but is not rebuilt as far as I know. A compression check showed a consistent 110 psi in each cylinder. The original twin carbs have been completely disassembled and cleaned. They both function fine but run a bit rich. The original SU fuel pump was disassembled, cleaned and now operates fine. It also has a new fuel sending unit in the gas tank. The transmission shifts through all gears without a problem including reverse. It has no binding or grinding and the clutch is responsive. It has a new rear transmission seal due to a small leak that is now corrected (big project). The clutch master and slave cylinders were both disassembled and refreshed and are fully functional. The rear-end appeared to be fine and was left as is. Wheels / Suspension - The car has brand new tires mounted on the factory wire spoke rims. All five tires are Doral 185/70R-14s and each has brand new inner tubes inside. The rims were hand sanded then painted in a metallic base/clear which gives a pleasing reflection when hit by the sun. Front and rear brakes pads have lots of life left. Rear drums have new cylinders installed. E-brake works fine. Wheel hubs and caps were all cleaned and generously greased. Factory lever shocks are functional and do not leak. Although not shown, it has the original jack and tonneau bars which both function. Electrical – The entire electrical system was gone through chasing down any non-functioning items. The factory radio works and can be tuned to any local station. The headlights, taillights, signals, hazards and marker lamps all work, even the reverse lights and license plate lights work. There is a very small piece missing from the top of the right tail lamp but it is barely noticable. The fan and heater works and blows warm when on. It has a new heater control valve. The horn, wipers, windshield fluid pump, map light and dimmer switch all work (cigarette lighter does not but who would smoke in this car?). All guages work to include tach, speedo, fuel, temp, oil pressure, ignition lights, etc. It has a brand-new battery and has been converted from 6-volt to 12-volt. It keeps a charge fine. MGs are known for electrical problems so having all this electrical work done will be a real plus. Other – While I view the car as finished, a person is never done working on a 41 year-old British classic. If I kept the car I would eventually get a correct exhaust and probably re-work the SU Carbs as this style can require attention. Eventually, I would rebuild the engine but not until needed. I might also look into a classy luggage rack for the trunk lid. Until then, I would just enjoy it. The car is a fantastic sight to see and is quite stunning. Everyone compliments it. I have receipts for all the parts and more photos if desired. I also have a clear SD title ready to sign over. Just understand the car is sold As-Is with no warranty. Also understand it is advertised locally in town so I will entertain offers. You can send a check but I will hold it until it clears. I will work with your shipper to carefully load the car but I don’t have time to research the best deals out there. I have access to a trailer so if you are close we may be able to work something out. Send me a question if you have one and we can arrange talking further. Thanks for looking.
