LExterior Color: BlackInterior Color: BlueTitle: Clear Description With the all new "Hundred Million Dollar" look, the New Yorker gave Buick, Oldsmobile, and Mercury a run for their money. Dubbed the PowerStyle, Chrysler equipped this beauty with the second series of the first generation hemi (firepower) engine and the well known push button PowerFlite transmission. With the engineering and technology put in to these cars, one can see why the New Yorker had made its mark as the longest running American car nameplate. Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A third generation* 1956 Chrysler New Yorker. Very nice and in like original condition, this Chrysler is pleasing to the eye. The Black paint still has a decent shine to it and when waxed, is very nice. There is some minor fading present but that is to be expected out of what could be a 50 plus year old paint job. The body is in good solid shape and the floors and trunk all feel solid. There is no major damage or rust that we have seen and aside from a few scratches and very minor dings, it is presentable as it is. The chrome and stainless is in good shape with very minor fading and patina present. The glass is all intact with no cracks or chips. There is a scratch in the windshield from the wipers. The lighting lenses are all intact and in good condition. All of the lighting operates properly except for the brake lights and the back lighting for the gauges. The interior is in like original condition with what appears to be the original seat covers, carpet, headliner, etc. The windows, door locks and door handles operate as they should. There are a few functions that do not work and will need some attention such as the horn, the fuel gauge, the clock, the radio, and the dash brake indicator lamp. There is also some very minor rust and patina present on the chrome trim inside. Mechanically, this first generation Hemi runs well. It has good power, does not over heat, and has no odd noises or smells. There are some small fluid leaks but it has had a recent tune up, oil change, and valve cover gaskets replaced. There is a rough idle, and occasional hesitation when rapidly accelerating, and the factory mechanical fuel pump was removed and an electrical one installed in its place. The transmission shifts smoothly and quietly but the transmission oil pan leaks. There is also some noise coming from what is thought to be the U- Joints. Additionally, this Chrysler will need tires. The current tires have good tread but have very bad cracking around the edges due to age and exposure to the elements. This Chrysler also has one strange quirk. Intermittantly it does not want to start. You can turn the key but nothing will happen. The engine will not crank. This is overcome by depressing the accelerator pedal and then turning the key. The engine will then crank normally. It is believed that the neutral safety switch is the culprit but no diagnostics have been performed to confirm that. The linkage from the accelerator pedal pulls against something allowing the connection to be made. That is all that we were able to determine. Other than those mentioned items, this car overall could be a very enjoyable project, or with the minor issues repaired, would make in my opinion, an excellent driver. As far as mileage, the odometer is a 5 digit odometer common to cars of this vintage. We have no way of determining if the mileage shown is original, or if the odometer has "turned" over. We have included numerous photographs in an attempt to disclose the exact condition of this car, including its equipment, and have included information based on our inspection of the car. If there is any question as to the condition, or accuracy of the information included in this advertisement, we invite you to inspect the car personally or have a representative inspect the car on your behalf. *Our research materials show this to be a Third Generation New Yorker, (1955-1961) the second generation being 1949-1954, and first being 1938-1949. (there is a 1st and 2nd series of 1949 models) There has been debate over this subject. Additionally, generally we do not take the time in our advertisements to list what a car does NOT come equipped with, but in this case it has been suggested that we mention that this car does not have any power assisted (be it electric, vacuum, compressed air, hydraulic, or any other method of operation other than manually operated) options such as power steering, power windows, power brakes, power door locks, power seats, power antenna, power trunk, or any other itemthat generally would operate without effort from an operator. **Note, the Museum has a 1956 Chrysler Windsor described as a parts only car that will be offered at an additional cost to the buyer only. Production Information Original list price: $3,779 Production: 24,749 The History The Chrysler New Yorker is one of the longest lasting automotive model names in the industry having been in use from 1939-1996. The original New Yorker was a sub-series of the 1938 Chrysler Imperial but its popularity was such that it became a separate model line in 1939. By the early 1950s Chryslers were known as solid, well engineered cars but with old-fashioned styling. The 1951 arrival of the fantastic “Hemi” V-8 engine gave great performance but styling remained bland. By the mid-‘50s, a new designer, Virgil Exner, who had come from Studebaker in 1949 began to remake the entire line of Chrysler products in a new, more modern and exciting style. Over $100 million was spent to redesign the Chrysler line for 1955 and the dramatic new look was promoted as the “Hundred Million Dollar Look”. The new ‘55s were longer, lower, with larger glass areas and modest fins, typical of the period. A mild re-design for 1956 resulted in an even better looking car with an elegant, wide grille. The automatic transmission was now controlled by a set of push buttons in a cluster at the extreme left end of the instrument panel, a unique Chrysler feature that would continue for several years. While the lesser Winsor line used polysherical heads on the 331 cu. in. sometimes referred to as the "Semi Hemi", the New Yorkers had a stroked version of the 331 cu. in. "Hemi" that displaced 354 cu. in. Only the higher performance 300 series had more power. The mid 1950s were a time of dramatic development at Chrysler and the New Yorker proved to be a successful, luxurious performer. With the all new "Hundred Million Dollar" look, the New Yorker gave Buick, Oldsmobile, and Mercury a run for their money. Dubbed the PowerStyle, Chrysler equipped this beauty with the second series of the first generation hemi (firepower) engine and the well known push button PowerFlite transmission. With the engineering and technology put in to these cars, one can see why the New Yorker had made its mark as the longest running American car nameplate.
Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum
A third generation* 1956 Chrysler New Yorker. Very nice and in like original condition, this Chrysler is pleasing to the eye. The Black paint still has a decent shine to it and when waxed, is very nice. There is some minor fading present but that is to be expected out of what could be a 50 plus year old paint job. The body is in good solid shape and the floors and trunk all feel solid. There is no major damage or rust that we have seen and aside from a few scratches and very minor dings, it is presentable as it is. The chrome and stainless is in good shape with very minor fading and patina present. The glass is all intact with no cracks or chips. There is a scratch in the windshield from the wipers. The lighting lenses are all intact and in good condition. All of the lighting operates properly except for the brake lights and the back lighting for the gauges. The interior is in like original condition with what appears to be the original seat covers, carpet, headliner, etc. The windows, door locks and door handles operate as they should. There are a few functions that do not work and will need some attention such as the horn, the fuel gauge, the clock, the radio, and the dash brake indicator lamp. There is also some very minor rust and patina present on the chrome trim inside. Mechanically, this first generation Hemi runs well. It has good power, does not over heat, and has no odd noises or smells. There are some small fluid leaks but it has had a recent tune up, oil change, and valve cover gaskets replaced. There is a rough idle, and occasional hesitation when rapidly accelerating, and the factory mechanical fuel pump was removed and an electrical one installed in its place. The transmission shifts smoothly and quietly but the transmission oil pan leaks. There is also some noise coming from what is thought to be the U- Joints. Additionally, this Chrysler will need tires. The current tires have good tread but have very bad cracking around the edges due to age and exposure to the elements. This Chrysler also has one strange quirk. Intermittantly it does not want to start. You can turn the key but nothing will happen. The engine will not crank. This is overcome by depressing the accelerator pedal and then turning the key. The engine will then crank normally. It is believed that the neutral safety switch is the culprit but no diagnostics have been performed to confirm that. The linkage from the accelerator pedal pulls against something allowing the connection to be made. That is all that we were able to determine. Other than those mentioned items, this car overall could be a very enjoyable project, or with the minor issues repaired, would make in my opinion, an excellent driver. As far as mileage, the odometer is a 5 digit odometer common to cars of this vintage. We have no way of determining if the mileage shown is original, or if the odometer has "turned" over. We have included numerous photographs in an attempt to disclose the exact condition of this car, including its equipment, and have included information based on our inspection of the car. If there is any question as to the condition, or accuracy of the information included in this advertisement, we invite you to inspect the car personally or have a representative inspect the car on your behalf.
*Our research materials show this to be a Third Generation New Yorker, (1955-1961) the second generation being 1949-1954, and first being 1938-1949. (there is a 1st and 2nd series of 1949 models) There has been debate over this subject. Additionally, generally we do not take the time in our advertisements to list what a car does NOT come equipped with, but in this case it has been suggested that we mention that this car does not have any power assisted (be it electric, vacuum, compressed air, hydraulic, or any other method of operation other than manually operated) options such as power steering, power windows, power brakes, power door locks, power seats, power antenna, power trunk, or any other itemthat generally would operate without effort from an operator.
**Note, the Museum has a 1956 Chrysler Windsor described as a parts only car that will be offered at an additional cost to the buyer only. The Museum has 2 1956 Chrysler New Yorkers for sale and this parts car will be offered with both New Yorkers at an additional cost. The History
The Chrysler New Yorker is one of the longest lasting automotive model names in the industry having been in use from 1939-1996.
The original New Yorker was a sub-series of the 1938 Chrysler Imperial but its popularity was such that it became a separate model line in 1939.
By the early 1950s Chryslers were known as solid, well engineered cars but with old-fashioned styling. The 1951 arrival of the fantastic “Hemi” V-8 engine gave great performance but styling remained bland.
By the mid-‘50s, a new designer, Virgil Exner, who had come from Studebaker in 1949 began to remake the entire line of Chrysler products in a new, more modern and exciting style.
Over $100 million was spent to redesign the Chrysler line for 1955 and the dramatic new look was promoted as the “Hundred Million Dollar Look”. The new ‘55s were longer, lower, with larger glass areas and modest fins, typical of the period.
A mild re-design for 1956 resulted in an even better looking car with an elegant, wide grille. The automatic transmission was now controlled by a set of push buttons in a cluster at the extreme left end of the instrument panel, a unique Chrysler feature that would continue for several years.
While the lesser Winsor line used polysherical heads on the 331 cu. in. sometimes referred to as the "Semi Hemi", the New Yorkers had a stroked version of the 331 cu. in. "Hemi" that displaced 354 cu. in. Only the higher performance 300 series had more power.
The mid 1950s were a time of dramatic development at Chrysler and the New Yorker proved to be a successful, luxurious performer.

The California Automobile Museum in Sacramento, California, is the oldest non-profit Automobile Museum in California. We are both a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable corporation, and a licensed dealer in California. We sell cars that have been donated or consigned for sale through our vehicle program. All proceeds directly support cultural and educational activities provided by the museum to the Northern California community.
