LExterior Color: GreenInterior Color: WhiteTitle: Clear DescriptionBelieved to be the start to the niche market of personal luxury cars, Ford nailed the concept with the offering of the Thunderbird. Luxurious, classy, sporty, and powerfull, this model outsold GM's Corvette 5 to 1. Today you have the opportunity to own one of these beautys. Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A 1965 Ford Thunderbird Convertible. Kept as close to original as possible, BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER, with the needed repairs and upkeep done, this Bird is a great 20 footer. The metallic Aqua Green is close to the original color and shines very nicely. Some small imperfections can be seen up close but overall it is a good paint job. The car starts and runs well; it drives down the road smoothly and steers straight. There is a small exhaust leak coming from the passenger side of the engine. The car is equipped with dual exhaust and glass pack style mufflers. Although equipped with air conditioning, the system is currently in need of repairs. The fans and vent operations all work properly. The interior is neat and clean. Aside from a small tear on the drivers side arm rest, the interior is in great shape with no other visible tears or odors. The dome light and courtesy lights are non functioning but all other electrical systems seem to be in proper operating order. Known issues with the car other than what has been previously noted are the horn does not work, the driver's side window does not roll up, and the washer function of the windshield wipers does not work. Other than that, this is a solid, seemingly, rust free car. (No visible rust although upholstery and panels were not removed to inspect in detail) All of the chrome/stainless is in nice original condition with some signs of age but no major rust or damage. Overall, this is a very nice weekend cruiser. And, it has spent the majority of its life parked in a garage. Recently Performed Maintenance and Service, Water Pump replaced and cooling system flushed. All cooling system hoses replaced. Trunk Mat, Spare tire cover, kick panels replaced. Transmission Rebuilt. (1994 100,305 miles) Cylinder heads rebuilt. (1994 100,305 miles) Steering column rebuilt. Power Brake Booster replaced. Hydraulic Top motor and assembly replaced. Production Information Original list price: $4,953 Number produced: 6,846 The History Interest in smaller “sports-type” cars in the mid 1950s led to the development of both the Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Thunderbird. The Corvette arrived in 1953 and the “Bird,” two years later. The original two-seat “T-Bird” lasted three years. And while it has become an iconic symbol of the 1950s motoring scene, Ford wanted to increase sales even though Thunderbirds were outselling Corvettes 5 to 1 by 1957. Robert McNamara, head of the Ford Division responded to market surveys that indicated a demand for a four seat car and ordered that the 1958 Thunderbird would be a four-seater. The second generation “T-Bird” would be built for three years and, due to its formal roof and styling, would become known as the “square-bird.” 1961 saw the arrival of the third generation of Thunderbirds. This series would also be built for three years, 1961, '62, and '63. The 1961-'63 Thunderbirds would become known as “bullet-birds” due to their bullet-like profile. The final evolution of this series was the so-called “Jet bird” of 1964-'66. They were a more angular evolution of the bullet-birds with sharper edges and more deeply sculpted sides. The large, round taillights that were a hallmark of early Thunderbirds were replaced with large rectangular units that would be in use for several years. The car was available in coupe, Landau coupe, or convertible models. Landau coupes came with a textured and padded vinyl roof covering and the classic “S” shaped landau bars on the “C” pillars that were reminiscent of elegant folding roofs of the past. Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum

A 1965 Ford Thunderbird Convertible.

The History

Interest in smaller “sports-type” cars in the mid 1950s led to the development of both the Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Thunderbird.

The second generation “T-Bird” would be built for three years and, due to its formal roof and styling, would become known as the “square-bird.”

1961 saw the arrival of the third generation of Thunderbirds.
