1990 BMW K1 - VG Condition - No Reserve Year: 1990 Engine Size: 987 Make: BMW Miles/Hours:29980 Model: K1 VIN: Color:Red View Our Inventory New Vehicle Inventory Online Accessories --> Description: Rare 1990 K1 in red and yellow - VG Condition. Great candidate for concourse restoration. BMW's "K" inline four-cylinder engine gained a lot of attention when it was introduced, and much of it wasn't very positive. BMW enthusiasts were incensed that the company had nearly pulled the plug on the horizontally opposed twin. Fans of the Japanese brands were nonplussed by the flagship K100RS's two-valve-per-cylinder valvetrain, its bulky dry weight and its lofty price tag. BMW felt that it needed a shot in the arm to properly introduce the 16-valve version of the engine, as well as a new anti-lock braking system and rear suspension setup. The result was the BMW K1. It was a design that was originally penned in 1984, and came directly from long hours in the company's wind tunnel. At introduction, the bike was a sensation. Not a sales sensation mind you, but the kind of sensation that left bystanders thinking, "I don't believe I just saw that." First off, its unusual front fender, fairing, tail pod and rear glove boxes would have been outrageous even if the bike was painted flat black. But then BMW went and painted the bike in dark blue and a boldly contrasting yellow, and a red and yellow that is unofficially referred to as "ketchup 'n' mustard." And just in case you missed the tasteful, chrome K1 emblem on the tail, the bike's name was plastered all over its flanks in bright yellow. Subtle, the K1 is not. It was clear that the designers considered the rider a pesky afterthought. Contemporary critics complained that the riding position was not only uncomfortable, but its full bodywork, combined with a water-cooled, nearly car-sized four-cylinder engine, made the envelope of still air behind the fairing almost unbearably hot in warm weather. Perhaps the cardinal sin for BMW's faithful core constituency was the bike's lack of luggage space. Every BMW sport-bike since the K1 has had provisions for the company's trademark luggage. The K1 had small gloveboxes where hard luggage would have mounted. Soft luggage was available for the bike, but that just wouldn't cut it for BMW's customers. They may have wanted a sport-bike, but they also wanted hard, lockable storage for a week's worth of laundry. Love or hate the styling, you can't fault the technology that lay beneath. The 16-valve engine was good for a claimed 100hp at the crankshaft. Unfortunately, a good amount of that power was sopped up quite a bit by the bike's portly 613-pound curb weight. However, that weight also made it an absolute road-burner, capable of triple-digit speeds for hours on end. The K1 was also fitted with BMW's new anti-lock brake system from the K100RS Special, as standard equipment on all K1s sold in the United States. It was also the first platform for BMW's innovative Paralever rear suspension, which went a long way toward alleviating any handling disadvantages inherent in a shaft-driven motorcycle. Subsequent versions of this system are still in use on current BMWs, almost 20 years later. BMW expected it would sell 4,000 of these $13,000 superbikes every year, but at the close of the bike's three-year run--even after the styling and paint schemes were dialed back a notch--the company managed to sell only 6,919.This article originally appeared in the August, 2006 issue of Hemmings Motor News.
