Vehicle Detail

This is a great 1989 BMW 325iX - the first AWD drive sportscar with hard to find low-mileage of 96,053! Most "low-mileage" 325iXs have 125,000 miles or more, and it's not uncommon to see these with over 200,000 miles. This vehicle has the classic 3-series body and is excellent running shape with virtually all original BMW parts. This is a hard-to-find Automatic transmission. It has 6-cyl. and four doors. I've set the price low, because I want to sell it, but should it sell closer to what higher-mileage 325iXs have, I'll include extras, such as the ski bag, OEM unused mudflaps (themselves incredibly hard to find and have sold for upwards of $500 themselves on eBay recently), and a Thule rack specifically designed for the special roof gutter these vehicles have. More on these extras below. I acquired this car in early 2008 from the estate of a Long Island, NY collector who owned 5 of 325iXs: this was the one he fixed up, taking parts from his other 325iXs when needed. He repainted it the original BMW grey in 2007. I've put about 5,000 miles on it since I bought it and have had very little trouble. I replaced the starter in 2009 with a Bosch starter at a local BMW specialist (Louie's BMW of Peabody, Mass.), otherwise, it has been trouble-free and has shown why it's such a loved edition of the 3-series, especially in wintery weather. While I have always wanted a 3-series like this, I'm selling because I bought a larger car in January for my growing family (two kids under 3) and have driven this very little since. Realistically, with my family, two other cars and my job (I own my own business) I don't have the time to upkeep this vehicle, and want to see it go to someone who will appreciate it. Most 1989 325iXs you'll see have been tweaked and modded, but this is the real deal: this one has been restored to have all the parts and accessories it would have been when you paid $64,000 (inflation adjusted) in 1989 for it. Understand there is some wear and tear and with any car this age (detailed below), but it is in excellent shape overall. I replaced the original Alpine AM/FM cassette deck with a Kenwood IPod compatible CD-player (with remote) - but I still have that original radio and it's included in the sale! Among the many features this car has: *Cruise Control*Heated driver and passenger seats*All-wheel drive*Fog lights*Sunroof - one of the last handcranked models!*Original edition BMW interior upholstry.*Original basketweave wheels*Power sideview mirrors*Classic BMW touches such as the rechargeable glovebox flashlight, the trunk toolbox, early onboard computer, rear-view mirror with reading lights, lighted rear ashtray - and more!*Full size spare in trunk. *Original BMW 325iX rubber spoiler.*Original carpeting in cabin and trunk - it is in excellent shape, having been protected by rubber matting when in use. I'l include those with the car. Known issues:Mainly this car has some of the minor wear-and-tear issues the 325iX is known to experience:*The hand crank has a slight crack (a common wear and tear issue with this model), which means sometimes when the handle is put into the stored position, it may lip off.*I disconnected the trunk light because it stays on when the trunk is closed, draining the battery.*The passenger side chrome window trim can come loose at high speeds. Likely easily fixed with a pair of pliers.*The clock/onboard computer sometimes seems to have a loose connection, making the readout screen flicker. I just press on it briefly and it usually takes car of the problem.*The left rear passenger window does not lower. It has since I had it, but stopped last year. I never had it checked out - it is either a fuse or I have read sometimes the button connection in the center console wears down and needs to be fixed. Also:*This one lacks the 325iX name plate on the trunk.*The original grey cloth upholstry shows a lot of wear in the front two bucket seats. I have identical, new upholstry I'm including in this sale. The prior owner had acquired it with the intent of having the front and back seats redone.*There is a small, quarter-sized chip of paint under the right rear door handle. This door was taken from another, red 325iX, and you can see a bit of the paint underneath. Also, the door doesn't quite close or unlock seamlessly like the others, because it's from a different car, but does close firmly and lock/unlock - you just may need to ensure it has closed properly sometimes.*One of the wheel covers has bit of the BMW logo missing (the plastic covering wore off last year)*The interior driver side door has a bit of wear and tear - the side pocket is damaged and was spot fixed with duct tape. There is also a spot where a hole was repaired.*I've driven it very little since January, so I'd recommend changing the oil etc. soon.*I'm including the 1989 BMW 3-series manual, plus related brochures about the antitheft radio and other BMW info from the time. I'll include the Hayes Service manual for the 3-series of this time on a CD-rom for your reference. The best part of this car is its engine: it runs great and accelerates very, very nicely. The only engine/driving issue I know of is when flooring the gas immediately from a cold start, the engine may over-rev and briefly stick at high revs, which can be disconcerting. That shouldn't be done with any car anyway, but I mention it because it is a car that one wants to drive at high speed. With just 96,000 miles on it, it should run great for many years with normal maintenance. I recently spoke with the person I bought it from (who handled the estate from which this was purchased.) He believes the timing belt was replaced c. 2007 and a notation was made on the fuse box. I checked and there is the number 905 written on the fuse box in pencil. It could represent 90,500, which would be about 490 miles before I bought it. If I just found it myself, I'd dismiss it, but the seller seemed pretty confident. Take that for what it is worth. Just eyeing the belt, it looks fine (but that too is an unreliable gauge) Other issues 325iXs may have, but this one doesn't:No rust! - none that I can see or have found, including in some of the classic trouble spots, such as the trunk well where the jack is stored. No cracks on the dashboard! The black dashboard has no cracks whatsoever. There is a small mark on the glovebox door where a nick was repaired at some point, but otherwise this could be from a new car, it is in fantastic shape. No cracked headlights! The specialized plastic headlights on these cars sometimes crack, but these do not. All four lights - the headlights, brights, plus the foglights, taillights etc. all all in perfect condition. Bonus items for high biddersAs I said, I want to sell the car so I have set the price relatively low. however, knowing 325iXs often go for well over $5,000 on eBay. I wanted to put in some incentives for bidders. For a winning bid over $3,000: I'll include the 325iX ski bag: it's an add-on that swaps into the rear seat center arm rest allowing you to store your skis in through the trunk into the cabin, without getting snow and ice into the cabin. This one is in very good condition, however the clasp which is used when the bag is not in use is broken. For a winning bid over $3,500: the ski bag plus a Thule roof rack, with specialized footings for the BMW 325iX gutter, as well as the load bars sized for the car. Since no car has these types of gutters anymore, I don't believe you can find a roof rack for the 3-series of this type. Note the rack will not come with the Thule lock cylinders. For a winning bid over $4,000: You'll win the ski bag, the Thule roof rack system and original unused BMW mudflaps! When I mentioned to the BMW 325iX chat group I had these, I was begged by many to sell them separately. They are incredible rare and hard to find, and this may very well be the only unused set around! These mudflaps have sold for $550 in recent months on eBay. This is a set of four, with original instructions. Please, do not ask me to sell any of these items separately outside of this auction. Should these not be won here with this car, I will list them individually later. Other notes:*The body is in fantastic shape - very few dings or scratches, though there one or two imperfections, but overall remarkable for a 22 year old sportscar.*I've driven it largely local trips, but have driven it between Boston and New York City a few times with no problems.*The vehicle is in Nahant, Mass., which is just north of Boston, a short drive from Logan Airport. Let me know if you have any questions or want photos of any part of the car not shown here. I'll do my best to answer quickly and comprehensively. Thank you for looking and good luck winning this wonderful rarity!
