Vehicle Detail
1968 Camaro SS (an original true SS that came from the factory with a 396 and a manual trans). It has 93,996 original miles and a clear Ohio title. I have owned this car for the last 17 years. It's been an off and on project the entire time. I started the project by disassembling the entire car and refinishing the frame (smoothed the seams, block sanded smooth and base coated black and cleared.) The underneath of the car has been completely refinished in the same way as the frame. The car was stripped bare and epoxy primed (DP40). The paint is all PPG using 2021 clear which runs about $250 a gallon or more (and went through a lot of it). The color is a PPG specialty color called "bright orange". The body: All panels are straight, but car is only partially bolted together. All panels are original GM panel except for the quarters. Have the original SS hood and it also comes with an aftermarket steel cowl induction hood. Virtually every part of the car has been reworked, refinished or replaced. No rust anywhere. The dash has been painted (not the dash pad), and the steering column. All the headlight mounting brackets have been refinished. Have all the original stainless trim. The upper door and SS trim have recently been repolished. Do not have a windshield for it. All other glass is good and original. Have all the original SS emblems, grille, gas tank, steering wheel and hood inserts. I have all the gaskets/seals, and most of them are new (a few may need replaced). The original ones were actually in really good shape. This has set inside dry storage for many years before I bought it and has been inside since I owned it. Have a brand new grille (not painted). I've got all the trim pieces, but some of the pieces you may want to replace, depending on your level of perfection. The door handles have pitting as do the taillight rings and the bumpers but they are all there and original to the car. I have the headlight trim rings and the mounting panels which have been refinished. The trim rings have been polished but have not had the black paint insert repainted. Have all the marker lights. The front marker light bezels have been polished. The drivetrain: The engine is a 1970 454ci out of a Chevelle (the legendary 512 block, which was also used in the COPO models). It is fresh with only a few minutes of running time for tuning purposes. It has a stock steel crank, .30 over, a gear drive, and a comp cam. It has a 750cfm Demon carb (brand new). Polished aluminum intake. True braided stainless steel lines from carb to fuel pump. Nearly all bolts on the motor are stainless steel 12 point ARP. Brand new factory stainless steel fuel line to tank. New front stainless steel brake lines with flexsteel lines that go to the calipers. Slotted rotors. The gas tank is brand new (so is the sending unit which is Genuine GM). Completely rebuilt front end (all new bushings, tie rods, ball joints). New Hotchkiss 1 1/8" sway bar. Professional engine builder (Ohio Crankshaft) rates motor at or above 500hp. Aluminum water pump, aluminum alternator bracket ($150 from billet specialties), aluminum pullies. New alternator. Comes with a Mallory ignition control box (new and mounted to firewall but not hooked up). New Mallory wires. 50,000 volt coil. Basically, everything on the motor is new. It will need a starter...it works, but not very well. It was purchased new but the warranty has worn out. New Carter fuel pump. The large Autometer gauges are also new (liquid filled) (temperature and oil pressure). The radiator is a new aluminum AFCO racing radiator. The brake system is completely new and set up for disk brakes in front (master cylinder, proportioning valve, etc.) I have the calipers but they are not installed. The transmission is a Muncie M-21 that is freshly rebuilt (a $900 rebuild). It has a new 11" Centerforce II clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Brand new SFI flywheel with an original hard-to-find aluminum bellhousing to fit an 11" clutch. Even the clutch fork has been stripped bare, and base coated / cleared. The speedometer cable is new. The driveshaft has been smoothed and painted. The rear end is a 12 bolt Chevy rear from a 1969 Camaro. It has been upgraded with 30 spline Strange axles, c-clip eliminators, with a 3:73 gear and a full spool. Have original posi unit for that rear end. The brakes are all rebuilt in the back. The shocks are all new GM shocks. Has frame connectors. All new springs front and rear. Has a TA aluminum rear end plate/cover. Strange brand yoke. The rear end was built to withstand over 1000 horsepower and it is fresh - absolutely no miles. The entire drivetrain is fresh...has only been run to tune, with zero miles on anything. It has the old school style slapper bars which I've owned since 1987. They're actually the rear spring mounts (not the cheap kind). It has Hooker competition headers which have freshly been powder coated. The harmonic balancer is new. Well over $15K in drivetrain. All motor work done by professional race engine builders. If you want to see a video of this engine running, please go to youtube: http://youtu.be/HA9y8gNWyKE Interior: Have entire interior. Discriminating Camaro owners would probably want to have the seats recovered. The door trim panels should be replaced. Dash pad has cracks. Needs carpet. Pedal pads have all been replaced with new stainless inserts. The vent ducts in the dash have been replaced with new bezels and felts. Also comes with new window felts. Has a new firewall insulation mat. New information bezels for headlight and ignition switches. All heater controls work. The heater motor blows fine. Windshield wipers work but motor is not installed. What you will need to buy to complete this car: wheels and tires, exhaust, windshield, interior kit, a rear light wiring harness (the original one is in the car but needs replaced), power steering lines, a starter (it works but not well). At the time of this listing, that's all we can think of. Each panel was painted individually inside and out, but at different times - therefore the hues on some panels vary a little; you may want to do a quick scuff and spray over. There may be more minor pieces needed, but they would be minor (a small trim piece or something small like that). The bottom line: Everything on this car has been refinished meticulously with a lot of love and professional care and expertise. Nothing was half-assed in any way, shape or form. The underneath is as shiny and finished as the top, but it is a bit dusty just from sitting in storage. It has been my project for 17 years, but unfortunately I never had the money when I had the time, and never had the time when I had the money and in the mean time, I have had a personal emergency arise that necessitates this sale. This car was never purchased with the intention to have to sell it. You are purchasing this car with no warranty expressed or implied. I have given you every piece of information about the car that I can remember. I have bags full of receipts from the past 17 years and also have pictures of the build process. If you need a picture of anything at all, please feel free to email. Please don't ask what the reserve is. If you'd like to make a buy-it-now offer, send us a message and if we like your offer we'll add a buy-it-now option for you. It is for sale locally, so we reserve the right to remove this listing if we have an in-person buyer. You are welcome to come inspect the car before bidding. Send a message to arrange an appointment. You must arrange and pay for shipping -- we do not have a means of transporting this car to you. It will roll if you have rear wheels to put on it. On Apr-17-11 at 11:37:48 PDT, seller added the following information: Added 4/17/2011: When I stated you need an interior kit, that would be for those who want the car to be PERFECT. If you just want it to be a good driver, have the driver's seat bottom recovered, get a headliner, door pads and a carpet. The dash is cracked but it's not terrible by any means. Also, the windshield wiper motor is now installed. I also wanted to say again that all work has been performed by true professionals who earn their living building and restoring street cars, race cars and hot rods. There are no runs in the paint or anything low-class like that. This car was being built to put everyone else's Camaros at the local car shows to shame. It has top-notch everything -- the only thing that was skimped on was the starter, which is why it doesn't work well. We had intended to replace it with a new CSV starter, but we have had this emergency come up which is forcing the sale of this car. I will upload more pictures of the interior later today. If you have any questions at all about this car, call 937-621-0467. And yes, it really is a 512 block, the same one that was used in COPO Camaros (but this one came out of a 70 Chevelle). On Apr-17-11 at 12:18:05 PDT, seller added the following information: The block code is 3963512. I've added more pictures of the interior and the pitting on the door handles and side view mirrors for your inspection. If you want/need pictures of anything on this car, please feel free to email. On Apr-17-11 at 18:01:36 PDT, seller added the following information: Here is what the car looks like right now (April 17, 2011): A close up to show how straight the fender is: Left front of the car: A view from the right front fender: A close up of the bumper so you can see the shape it's in (pretty good with minimal pitting): And a close up of the tail light bezel so you can see the pitting on it: A view of the right rear: Left side view: Just one of the many boxes of original parts that come with this car:
