A quality engineered vehicle at a used car price; a really great car for pennies on the dollar. Well, in this auction, you have the opportunity to purchase just that. So what defines a great car? Engineering? Design? Price? Name? Safety? Reliability? Resale value? How about all of the above? Enter the Mercedes, Offered For Sale By The California Automobile Museum, A 1977 Mercedes 450 SL. Clean inside and out, this Mercedes is ready for the beautiful spring weather. Complete with a removable hard top, and canvas top tucked neatly below, you are prepared for nearly any weather condition. The Mercedes is a nice runner. It cruises nicely down the freeway and acheives freeway speeds with ease. The steering, suspension, engine and transmission all operate as they should and the car tracks straight down the road. Exterior is in good shape. It has been painted at some point in the car's history but it is unknown as to when. The car currently sports aftermarket TSW rims and 225/40 ZR18 tires, to some a compliment to the cars timeless lines. If the rims are not your style, the factory steel rims are available as well. The drivability and handling do not seem to be affected by the upgrade in rim fittment. Additional changes from the factory equipment include a stereo, 6"X9" rear speakers, and wiring in the trunk for an optional C.D. changer unit. Although very nice to look at, and a joy to drive, this Mercedes is not perfect. Some of the small issues are cosmetic and include the lack of sun visors, the glove box light is not working, the material on the steering wheel is worn and is currently covered by an aftermarket cover, one removal clip is missing from the hard top (the opposite side removes so that it can be used on either side) the right passenger seat belt latch cover is broken, the back portion of the drivers seat is a little loose or out of adjustment, there are some small cracks in the dash upper panel, the carpet in the front is worn uner the mats, and the canvass top has some small tears in it. The window in the canvass top is also discolored (yellowed). In addition to the small cosmetic items, there are a few mechanical/electrical issues. The hazard lights do not operate, the stereo does not operate, the window control switches sometimes need to be pressed repeatedly before the windows respond, the fan (defrost/heater) squeaks from time to time, the shut off switch/levers are stuck and do not shut off the dash vents, and the A/C system does not get real cold. Production Information Original list price: $21,943 Number produced: 66,298 (Total 450 SL production, 1971-80) The History Mercedes-Benz is one of the oldest and most respected car manufacturers in the world. Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz of Germany were independently developing automobiles in the mid-1880’s. A financial backer of Daimler sponsored the development of a sporting model to be named after his daughter, Mercedes. The Daimler and Benz companies merged in 1926. While best known for their solid sedans, Mercedes has a long and illustrious background in racing and has built some of the most respected two-seat sports and GT cars in the world. The famed 300SL and its smaller sibling, the 190SL are icons of the mid and late 1950’s. In 1963 Mercedes updated their two-seat line with the more angular 230SL. Known as the “Pagoda” model due to the concave upper surface of the optional hard top, the 230 would grow in power and appointments through the 250 and 280 versions. Largely to please its American customers, in 1972 Mercedes introduced the 350SL; a much larger, heavier, and far more luxurious grand-tourer than the earlier SLs. While a 3.5 liter version was sold in Europe, only the larger 4.5 liter version was available in the U.S. The 450SL was a strong seller in the U.S. market and became an icon for people who wanted a sporting, luxury touring car for two. While a cloth convertible top was standard, most were also sold with a heavy removable hard top that made the car a secure, all weather performer. While not a “sports car” in the traditional sense, the 450SL was just the car for a spirited drive just about anywhere. A 1977 Mercedes 450 SL. Clean inside and out, this Mercedes is ready for the beautiful spring weather. Complete with a removable hard top, and canvas top tucked neatly below, you are prepared for nearly any weather condition. The Mercedes is a nice runner. It cruises nicely down the freeway and acheives freeway speeds with ease. The steering, suspension, engine and transmission all operate as they should and the car tracks straight down the road. Exterior is in good shape. It has been painted at some point in the car's history but it is unknown as to when. The car currently sports aftermarket TSW rims and 225/40 ZR18 tires, to some a compliment to the cars timeless lines. If the rims are not your style, the factory steel rims are available as well. The drivability and handling do not seem to be affected by the upgrade in rim fittment. Additional changes from the factory equipment include a stereo, 6"X9" rear speakers, and wiring in the trunk for an optional C.D. changer unit. Although very nice to look at, and a joy to drive, this Mercedes is not perfect. Some of the small issues are cosmetic and include the lack of sun visors, the glove box light is not working, the material on the steering wheel is worn and is currently covered by an aftermarket cover, one removal clip is missing from the hard top (the opposite side removes so that it can be used on either side) the right passenger seat belt latch cover is broken, the back portion of the drivers seat is a little loose or out of adjustment, there are some small cracks in the dash upper panel, the carpet in the front is worn uner the mats, and the canvass top has some small tears in it. The window in the canvass top is also discolored (yellowed). In addition to the small cosmetic items, there are a few mechanical/electrical issues. The hazard lights do not operate, the stereo does not operate, the window control switches sometimes need to be pressed repeatedly before the windows respond, the fan (defrost/heater) squeaks from time to time, the shut off switch/levers are stuck and do not shut off the dash vents, and the A/C system does not get real cold. It does cool but will most likely require servicing.

The History
Mercedes-Benz is one of the oldest and most respected car manufacturers in the world.
Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz of Germany were independently developing automobiles in the mid-1880’s. A financial backer of Daimler sponsored the development of a sporting model to be named after his daughter, Mercedes. The Daimler and Benz companies merged in 1926.
While best known for their solid sedans, Mercedes has a long and illustrious background in racing and has built some of the most respected two-seat sports and GT cars in the world. The famed 300SL and its smaller sibling, the 190SL are icons of the mid and late 1950’s. In 1963 Mercedes updated their two-seat line with the more angular 230SL. Known as the “Pagoda” model due to the concave upper surface of the optional hard top, the 230 would grow in power and appointments through the 250 and 280 versions.
Largely to please its American customers, in 1972 Mercedes introduced the 350SL; a much larger, heavier, and far more luxurious grand-tourer than the earlier SLs. While a 3.5 liter version was sold in Europe, only the larger 4.5 liter version was available in the U.S.
The 450SL was a strong seller in the U.S. market and became an icon for people who wanted a sporting, luxury touring car for two. While a cloth convertible top was standard, most were also sold with a heavy removable hard top that made the car a secure, all weather performer. While not a “sports car” in the traditional sense, the 450SL was just the car for a spirited drive just about anywhere.
