Vehicle Detail
Found in 2009 in Shelbyville, TN, up for auction is #369 of the first 500 240Z's ever produced. Produced in the late 1969, was sold in 1970 in Atlanta, GA and resided in Chattanooga, TN. We are selling due to a cross country move where I will no longer have a shop/garage to complete the project. The good news for purchaser is that the hard work has been done. Included are all parts from major mechanical to bumper moldings, extras of many, a completed build on the motor and a sound body to start with. All is bone stock, nothing has been molested. I hope she gets the chance to return to running condition. She deserves it and is quite the find. Also included is the original 1970 title which the county clerk was kind enough to let us keep due to the collector nature of the vehicle. The odometer reads 59,000 and we believe this to be accurate due to the age of the tires still on the car and receipts found in the vehicle. It appears to have last been moved in the early 1980s from Chattanooga, TN to Shelbyville. The owner was deceased and the restoration project never completed. She is a four speed with factory air conditioning making her even more rare, and a true contender for daily driving status once restored. More (and better) pictures are available here via Picasa: https://picasaweb.google.com/Hannah.Coffey/1969Datsun240Z?authkey=Gv1sRgCN2k54rvvY_6hQE# MAJOR MECHANICAL: The engine (E31 #9828D, see photo, matches vehicle, with an E88 head due to the hard to find nature of the original) has been machined by Neal's Cylinder Heads of Murfreesboro, TN. Bore out to .20. No pitting was found on walls on breakdown, and surface required very little if any leveling. Engine breakdown went relatively smoothly. Engine had seized due to the length of time it sat. NOTE: Nothing had been removed from the vehicle, all was assembled and in original condition. Build is completed all the way to the valve train. If you have any questions for me, I did the build personally and will be happy to answer them at length below. BODY: There is light rust present (see photos) but none pervasive or in rocker panels or at tower mounts. Body has been primed and I have coated trouble spots with a chelating agent to prevent spread of any oxidation. The passenger side frame rail has been replaced at some point in the car's lifetime. According to my datum rods it is at least 3mm off from the drivers side, but it is not damaged or broken, most likely due to an amateur install job. It will need to be replaced by a competent body shop. All glass is intact and original. Gas tank is a Nissan OEM replacement, and will need resurfacing and a new coating layed on the interior. It is currently sealed and kept dry (see photos). Radiator is intact and appears good. I would recommend a professional clean and prep by a radiator shop before install along with the fuel tank. INTERIOR. Tears in the driver's side seat, passenger quite good. Appear to have been covered most of the vehicles life. Rear hatch an 8 of 10 for its age, with no major tears of fading. I have kept the car cocooned and out of the sun. Window seals are aging, but GOOD and do not leak! Floors and carpet are in reasonable shape with no rust, but it will need upholstry and carpeting fitted for the floor. PARTS: Too many to list here. All have are OEM/Nissan/Datsun purchased. Photos of parts lists are included below. All have been labled and boxed. Original carbs have been built. Of note, improved higher output oil pump has been purchased as well (this is a 2-3 week wait from Japan at best, likely longer now due to parts shortages). There is also a 2nd set of bumpers with no rust or pitting being sold with the vehicle. Side markers, decals and wheel emblems are also included. Deposit: $500 cash due within 48 hours of auction closing. Remainder of purchase price due in cash via money order or bank transfer at time of pick up or within 14 days of auction close, whichever comes first. Transport: You will need to arrange transport for the vehicle yourself (I have some carriers in the south east I have used previously, as well as to Colorado and Montana and am glad to give you their contact information.) The motor and transmission will be crated and shipped with the vehicle. All ancillary parts will be shipped INSIDE the vehicle. You are also more than welcome to come and pick up the vehicle in person yourself. She is currently stored in Bell Buckle, TN at BBMW (Bell Buckle Motor Works). You may arrange to come and view the car, parts and motor at any time during the business week or on Saturday and Sunday by appointment. We are a short drive from Nashville, TN or Chattanooga, TN/Atlanta, GA and I would recommend viewing the vehicle in person if you have any reservations about its condition, particular parts, or the build while the motor is still on a stand and before crating.
