Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a RARE 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 that has recently been restored. If you're reading this ad, then you probably already know that the '71 Mustang was the last year before Ford went crazy with emissions. This (and the fact that the engine bay is set up to house the venerable Super Cobra Jet big block - another boon of the '71 model) makes the '71 a highly collectible Mustang. This particular example ups the rarity ante by being a factory air car (all of the original A/C parts will come with the vehicle). Surprisingly, however, Ford made over 14,000 air conditioned Mustangs in 1971. 1 of 14,000 or so ain't bad, but the car up for auction is made more scarce with how it was optioned. While most owners were going for the 351's, the original owner of this Mach 1 kept it simple with the 302 and the 3 speed manual transmission. That may sound like a less desirable setup, but it actually makes this numbers-matching car quite rare. Throw in the red over white color combo, factory console, radials and a few other key options, and this pony is one of less than 200 made by Ford in 1971. As mentioned, the car has been restored. We're not talking rotisserie here - we're talking a nice resto in hopes of making a nice driver to and from car shows and the like. There are new floor pans, leaded body work (there's is a very small amount of synthetic bonding on the back underpanel, but none whatsoever in the actual painted surfaces of the car) and painted-on hood and side graphics in gloss black.Only the hood has been wet-sanded, however, but the car still looks very sharp. Small areas of pin hole rust that has been treated (as in, not rusting anymore) are located around the gas tank filler (see photo), and under the dash near the driver's left knee. The most noticeable defects are more clear due to the lack of wet-sanding; these are small pockets where the lead has sunken a bit and taken away from that smooth-as-glass appearance. These are almost all on the roof--a few on the hood and rear pillar. None on the doors, fenders, etc. from what I can see. This is FAR from a bondo bucket or an misshapen pile, but i want to be clear that it's about a 7 footer in its current state....with very very little work needed to make it a one footer. mechanically, the original motor has been fully redone. 0 miles on it! This is a bone stock rebuild for all you nostalgia buffs. This is the good, non-egr engine setup, mind you, and makes very good power. The only non-original part of this motor is the carb - it comes with a reman unit from Autolite. The rest of the upgraded parts--both inside and out--for this vehicle are too numerous to list, but rest-assured that thousands and thousands have been spent on repro and new old stock parts from some of the most reputable vendors out there (receipts to prove it). Just some of the fresh, never used/gently used parts include the gas tank and sender, window and door moldings, hood pin locks, headliner, seat covers, carpet, center console, dash pad, shocks, springs, battery tray, grille, rear spoiler, and the list goes on. Many of these parts are shown in the accompanying photos. As far as what you will probably want to/need to replace - not much folks. The original flywheel is there, but you'll probably want to put a fresh clutch in it. Another wear item-the brakes- could probably stand to be serviced. And the original steering wheel is a bit long in the tooth, with cracks that make it a mismatch for the fresh factory interior pieces that come with the car. I am selling this Mach 1 at this time as a roller project. If I put it back together, it will be worth A LOT more than what I'm asking in its current state. The trans is in the car, and the motor is on the mounts. Rolls and steers of course. Back glass is out still, since it shouldn't go in until the headliner is in place. The new springs are on, and the tires are in great shape! The beauty of this Mach 1 is that it's a project that you can complete how YOU want to complete it! This is just a very very good starting point for someone that doesn't want to have to start from the ground up. flatbed shipping is available with reasonable distance. I will cooperate fully with the carrier of you choice of course, to ensure safe delivery of your new thoroughbred. *****The official Marti Report is available upon request******
