Vehicle Detail
I am Tom Klein, doing business as Tom’s Cool Cars An Independent North Carolina Licensed & Bonded Dealer I deal in Collector Cars only, specializing in Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, all generation Corvette’s, European high performance cars, American Classics & anything else that’s cool. It’s a lifelong hobby that morphed into a semi-retirement business a few years back. Many of the cars offered are from my own collection. If it’s not cool I don’t own it or sell it! I attempt to be as complete as possible with my descriptions. After reading it if you have any further questions I will be happy to discuss this Ranchero at length. I also welcome you or your representative to come see, drive and inspect it prior to the auction conclusion. Call me at 336-372-7400 between 8:30 AM & 6 PM Eastern time any day. I can also be reached via direct email at: tom@tomscoolcars.com Also check out my other auctions. First an excellent Highly Documented One Owner 1970 Chevelle SS 396/350 and a Very Cool Resto-Modded Big Block 1968 Chevy Short Bed Stepside Pickup that was my winter project and has just been completed. A UNIQUE COLLECTIBLE LOOKING FOR AN APPRECIATIVE ENTHUSIAST OWNER All Numbers Correct See Decode Below Brief info from Dearborn Classics: The Ford Ranchero was produced by the Ford motor company from 1957 through 1979. This unique vehicle was the first of its kind being the first car with a truck bed. Due to the Ranchero’s success Chevrolet introduced its version, the El Camino, two years later in 1959, but the Ranchero was the original "car-truck". From 1960 through 1966 the Ranchero followed the Falcon body style design and became the compact Ranchero pickup. The early Falcon Rancheros (1961-1963) were a great economy hauler which boasted 30 miles per gallon from the 144 cubic inch six cylinder and able to haul an 800 pound load capacity. These trucks made good sense for the ranch or around town. In 1963 the Ranchero was equipped (optional) with a 260 V-8 engine (long before the Mustang, built on the same Falcon platform and introduced late in the 1964 model year. Mustangs had no V-8 option until 1965). VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER: 1H27S176851. Decodes as follows: 1= 1961 H= Plant where built. Lorain, Ohio 27= Series & Body Style. Ranchero S= Engine Installed. 144 Cubic Inch 6 Cylinder 176851= Consecutive Unit Code. 76,851st Falcon Based Unit Built ENGINE CASTING CODE: CIDE 6015A. Decodes as follows: C= 1960 Series/Decade Vehicle 1= 1961 Model Year D= Falcon E= Component – Engine 6015= Engine Block Part Number. A= Truck Installation (Ranchero was Ford Truck Division vehicle). CYLINDER HEAD CASTING CODE: CIDE 6090A. Which decodes as above with 6090 being the cylinder head part number. CURRENT KELLY BLUE BOOK COLLECTOR CAR MARKET REPORT VALUE 1961 Ford Ranchero FAIR CONDITION: $4,700. GOOD: $9,300. EXCELLENT: $16,800 Ford Falcon based Rancheros are very, very, very rare in number. Do some research to see how many you can find on the market. Unlike Camaro's, Corvette's, Mustangs and yes, even Chevelle's (except for 41 year One Owner's), these very cool little Ford Falcon based car/trucks are as rare as hens teeth and really something special. You may well be the only person in your entire State that has one! This was going to be my winter project (drop in a small block Ford, Tremec 5 Speed & a 9" Rear) until the '68 Chevy Pickup mentioned above that's now up for auction came along. A friend was building that Chevy but ran into health problems so I bought and finished it. Now I need the storage space for a couple other recent additions to my collection. The Ranchero has to go. ABOUT THIS RANCHERO: As you can see from the photos this one is painted in classic shop truck style in flat black and red two-tone with classic lettering and pin stripes. All of the lettering and pin stripes were professionally painted freehand by Darin Allen of KillerDesignsByDarin. Darin is based in N.E. Kentucky and is the Official Pin Stripe & Lettering Artist for GoodGuys Rod & Custom Association events. The bed has a very nice new snap down vinyl bed cover with new bows to keep it arched. It has recently received new brakes and there are also new brake lines installed. It is also equipped with new modern Sumitomo radial tires done up in classic white wall style. The wheels are painted red with red beauty rings and Moon style chrome hubcaps. The 6 cylinder engine is equipped with Tube Headers. The front three and the rear three cylinders each are plumbed into their own collector, thus it is a true dual exhaust system. One of the mufflers had a hole punched in it and rather than patch it I just replaced it with a brand new one. The other muffler and all the exhaust pipes are in very good condition. The interior is in overall good condition. The dashboard is original. The headliner and sun visors have been replaced. The bucket seats were recently professionally re-foamed and reupholstered. The original radio (not functioning) is still in the dash as are the original gauges, plus after market oil pressure, water temp & amp gauges mounted under the dash. It’s a manual transmission with the classic, “Three On The Tree” shift mechanism, which works well. The battery was installed new in September 2009. With a little of the manual choke applied she starts right up from dead cold. The door window mechanisms work perfectly. All the glass in the car appears to be original (Ford logos in glass) although there is a crack in the center of the windshield, which after 50 years needs to be replaced anyway and would be very inexpensive. The headlights and brake lights work, the turn signals work. The vacuum windshield wipers want to work but are slow. There have been repairs to lower body panels. The undercarriage shows its age with inner panel rust and the rear sub-frame has rusted sections at the kick-ups to the wheel arches. A relatively easy fix for anyone who does basic metal fab and welding or by a welding shop. The floors and bed are solid, the front clip is in very good condition and the suspension has a lot of new parts installed including new lower control arms and ball joints. The Bumpers, while the chrome is faded, are in excellent condition. No dings, dents or bends which is a real plus. The same goes for the grill, headlight bezels, windshield trim, wiper arms and more. Although this is a running and driving car I am not recommending it be purchased and driven cross country without further evaluation and work. It is, after all, 50 years old and un-restored and will be a project to the extent to which level you decide to take it. It is a very cool rare and collectible vehicle perfect for a Car Guy on a budget to improve while driving, for the Collector who wants a great deal on a fully restorable classic, or for the Rod & Custom enthusiast who would like to build a great custom show stopper. It is certainly a great small block V-8 candidate which would make it quite a Hot Rod, and it is also a good vehicle for introducing the car hobby to a son or daughter. In any of these scenarios in the hands of an appreciative enthusiast this rare car/truck will never be worth less than it can be bought for right now. And, it can be bought right at No Reserve with a more than reasonable minimum opening bid!
