For auction is one of the last 1967 Mercedes Benz 230 SLs to be produced. VIN # 11304210019447 rolled off the line in December, 1967, after which Mercedes would turn entirely to the second and third version of the same car with more torque, the 250SL and the 280 SL. The 230 was the first of the so-called “Pagoda” top Mercedes which referred to the slight swag that ran down the middle of the matching hard top. This 230 is red with matching red hard top and a tan convertible cloth top. The car is rare in that it has a manual four-speed transmission as opposed to the automatic favored by the U.S. market. It has the standard inline six cylinder engine, with fuel injection, producing 150 hp and top speed of 120 mph. Also very rare, this 230SL is one of very few in existence that has air conditioning. The unit, in good working order and matching interior knobs, was custom made for this car in Los Angeles. So far as I know, no 230 SL came with factory air, thus making a custom one necessary to fit the small space not large enough for a regular unit. The air conditioner alone adds $2,000 to $3,000 to the car’s value. The care has 150,000 miles showing, an average of about 3,500 miles a year over its 43 years of age. Overall, the car has been well-maintained and (except for the air conditioner) is all original, including the clock and radio. Walnut wood on dash is in mint condition, with cracks beginning to show in the dash vinyl. Seats were recovered and new carpet installed a few years ago, using original materials from Germany. It has a rebuilt power brake booster and new front brake calipers and shoes. Hard top is in good condition, but needs a new headliner.
