Vehicle Detail
After a thorough search, I purchased this 1980 Jeep CJ7 Renegade package in March 2010. This Jeep is very very solid and I would consider it 98% rust free. I have invested over $10,000.00 in the cost of the Jeep, mechanical parts and servicing. All parts have less than 2,500 miles on them. The Jeep is very reliable and I have spent thousands of dollars working out most of the kinks. It drives straight at highway speeds all day, does not wander, rattle, and no has no steering slop. Steering wheel is dead on. Check my feedback below on recent vehicles, ATV’s and tractors I have sold on eBay. All positive. I only deal with original clean vehicles and disclose all the details. As far as rust, this is as solid a Jeep you will find in the Northeast. The body still has all of its original paint and decals. Paint is faded and thin on hood. This is one of my favorite CJ colors and I personally loved the patina of this Jeep. The vintage look gets more attention at shows than the cherry red shinny Jeep parked next it. The floors are extremely solid. Only bit of rust in floors is where the roll bar mounts to tub. Frame is 100% solid. Undercarriage is more than excellent. Only other spots of rust is an odd ¼ hole in the rear driver’s side quarter panel near the soft top snaps and some rust where the front fender skins meet the tub. Check out the photos of the tub rear corners and tailgate. No rust. The windshield frame has rust but I consider that nothing as these are cheap to replace. If you wanted to do a frame on restoration, this Jeep requires minimal bodywork. There is a crease or dent behind the rear passenger tire. Take a look at my photos of the undercarriage, tub and floors. This is one of the few eBay listings that show these images because most others are patched, bondo’ed and covered with undercarriage slop. Below is a lengthy list of mechanical parts installed in the last 2,500 miles. This truly is a turn key Jeep. I believe I have over $9,000.00+ in parts and labor (with receipts for 90% of it). I will mention costs with some of the repairs. Just before the winter I replaced the transmission with a rebuilt unit from Collins Brothers www.collinsbrosjeep.com in Texas. I also had the clutch and clutch linkage replaced as well as transfer case re-sealed. The skid plate (solid heavy metal with no rust) was sand blasted and painted – total cost for this project was $1,650.00). To transport the vehicle to my annual shore vacation (150 miles each way), I spent blew $1,000.00 on a tow bar set up which involved a Warrior collapsible tow bar, Warrior universal tow bar mounting brackets, removing the existing front bumper, solid welded an inner C-channel to front frame rails after grinding and painting frame with Zero Rust, drilled and secured tow bar mounts. I also had the shop wire the Jeep so that it could be plugged into my Ford dually trailer hitch and the Jeep lights act as trailer lights simply by swapping out the harness under the dash. All professionally wired and work 100%. Very simple and very convenient. Installed 4 new General Grabber A/T tires 31 10.50 R15 with less than 1,000 miles, wheel alignment and mounted very well treaded spare cost $700.00. Purchased and professionally installed a Tuffy Series II 10” center console cost $275.00. Purchased and installed a used Tuffy security storage locked mounted behind rear seat cost $100.00. Replaced factory aftermarket fender flares cost $70.00. Removed and replaced gas tank with 21 gallon conversion kit. The shop sand blasted gas tank skid plate and painted it with Zero Rust. The 21 gallon tank is plastic. Also installed a new fuel sending unit and soldered an extension tube on the fuel pick up for increased fuel capacity. Installed new fuel pump and gas filter. Total cost part and labor for fuel system $600.00. Had the carb disassembled, cleaned and adjusted properly and it is starting, running and driving perfect. No bogging or stalling. Idles great. Replaced speedometer cluster with a new OEM Jeep part $160.00. The following cost $5,000.00 in parts and labor: All new exhaust which includes all exhaust pipes from manifold back, catalytic converter and muffler. New radiator, radiator cap, thermostat, fan blade, fan shroud, upper / lower radiator hoses, and new water pump. Installed two new V-belts. New full tune up. New heater core and heater hose. New lower steering intermediate shaft. Rear brake service with new brake shoes. New master cylinder. Installed a good used brake vacuum booster. New Interstate 75 month battery. New starter. Completely new electrical wiring PAINLESS wiring kit. Replaced front drive shaft. Replaced rear axles with one piece units and replaced real axle seals. I have done more work and repairs just can’t remember it all. As stated earlier, the Jeep drives amazing, starts, runs, turns, handles, stops, and drives great. It is a very tight CJ. When I replaced the speedo, it had 34,000 miles on it and I believe that to be original. True mileage history unknown. Unfortunately my mechanic was not able to get the temp and fuel gauge to work. I did not want to leave it in the shop any longer to diagnose and correct this issue as I wanted to take advantage of the summer and fall weather. Factory clock and tach are not operating as well. All gauges illuminate. The high beam selector on the floor works as does the blue light high bean indicator in speedo. Emergency brake works as does the brake light in the speedo. Wipers work. Heat works great. All lights, turn signals, brake lights, etc work. All wiring is new (Painless Wiring kit). No stereo. I also installed an under dash toggle switch to illuminate the two bulbs under the dash that light up the interior as well as the bulb that lights up the engine compartment. Seats are aftermarket Jeep reproductions. The Jeep has been topless since April 2010. It came with a used weathered spice soft top and full soft doors. I removed it all and the hardware and it is all in storage. It is functional but worn. Full door windows are sewn shut. I also have a bikini top with some staining. I have a very nice set of half soft doors in great condition. I have a set of full steel doors that are for sale separately. The hard doors are early CJ7 style in a brown color that is not a match but can work or be painted. The hard doors are not part of this auction and are available for an additional $150.00 which is very fair. When it rains I cover the Jeep with a brilliantly designed cover manufactured by Rain Gear. It is a car cover custom fitted to go over the cab. It cost about $145.00 and keeps the entire interior dry. It has multiple straps that will hold cover on during high winds. Goes on and off in minutes. Motor has not been power washed, detailed and covered in shinny armor all. It shows some oil/fluid seepage from the valve cover. The vehicle in my parent’s driveway in River Vale, NJ 07675. River Vale is located in Bergen County, NJ near the George Washington Bridge and Tappan Zee Bridge. I live approximately 20 minutes from upper Manhattan. Please do not email me and ask me how far I am from you location, do your own mapquest or Google map search. To make an appointment for a viewing, please email me your telephone number. If you are bidding from out of the area, I’ll gladly cooperate with your shipping company. I can flat tow the Jeep to you for a reasonable fee if you live within 100 miles as long as the vehicle and delivery fee are paid in full in advance of drop off. Fee will cover my fuel; tow vehicle expense and paying a buddy to tag along. Anyone is welcome to stop by at 7:00 a.m. on a very cold morning and see that the Jeep will start at 20 degrees. If you have 0 or excessive negative feedback your bid will be retracted. No international sales unless you have family or friends in the United States that will hand me cash. Please do not offer me $3,000.00 for this Jeep or anything near that. I realize that I will not recover my costs, but I will not let it go for free.
