Vehicle Detail
I'm moving out of state, otherwise I would not be selling this car. It has been my daily driver since 2006. It has a few issues, but it has always been reliable. Like any old Beetle, it has its good points and not so good points. I am not a mechanic, so I can only give information based on my experience owning it, info from the previous owner, and info from mechanics who have worked on it. I will be as thorough as possible. Please email with any questions. I'm leaving the state on January 4th, so would need to arrange pick-up, delivery, or whatever before then. Okay-- The car has the original beige paint. It has small rust spots here and there on the body, but nothing terrible. It was involved in a fender-bender at some point (before I owned it) and the back rear fender has a couple of dents, and the bumper is bent a little. Other than that, there is no body wear or damage that you wouldn't expect from its age. The sunroof works--it opens and closes completely. When you close it, it is best to turn the handle and push the roof from the inside--otherwise it sometimes leaks. It doesn't leak from a car wash or a light rain, but for instance--Los Angeles has had steady downpours for almost a week now, and it has been leaking some. At some point it would be a good idea to replace the weatherstripping, etc. The weatherstripping around windows, etc are old and have some chipping, but the doors close solidly and the windows don't rattle. The seat covers were fairly new when I bought the car. They are creme-colored, so over the years they've started to look a little dingy, and could use a cleaning. However, no holes or damage, and the seats are comfortable. All four seatbelts are present. The carpet was also newer when I purchased. It is gray and nothing special, but at least not old and rotted. The door panels are original and in pretty good shape. Window handles, armrests, etc are all present. The steering wheel has a couple of small cracks in it. Under the glovebox, there are several chunks missing from the rubber/foam dash. The horn and windshield wipers work. The rear window defroster does not. The stereo/CD player was stolen a couple of years ago. The hole is neatly covered with black tape to keep cold air out. The headliner is original and not in the best condition. It isn't completely rotted and thrashed, but there are several holes and it's dingy. The floor pans feel pretty solid, and from underneath no major rust is visible. As with many old Bugs, there is some rust in the pan under the battery. With my first Beetle (of the 5 I've owned) the battery fell through the rusty floorpan onto the freeway when I was driving. The rust in THIS car is NOWHERE near that. I don't think it is anything that needs immediate attention. I had quite a bit of work done recently. The front and rear brakes are new. I replaced the tires. They're used, but in very good condition. I did not replace the spare, but it is there and inflated. The transmission is new and the car shifts well. It was popping out of gear and grinding a little, and the transmission work has fixed all of that. It had a full tune-up and the engine was steam-cleaned. The ignition switch was replaced to fix a sticking problem. Turn signals/lights were repaired and the turn signal arm on the steering column is new. The heater was fixed and works well. Also, the clutch was replaced less than a year ago. There is only one real negative when it comes to the car. It has an oil leak that I believe is coming from the oil cooler. I haven't had the time or money to get it fixed, plus it hasn't created any serious problems. The leak is small--a smattering of drops each day--a little more when the engine has gotten especially hot from driving. I check it every couple of days and between the leak and burn-off, I put 1/4 to 1/2 quart of oil in every couple of weeks or so. I cannot be sure what the problem is, but the compression is great and the engine is very strong. It has no problem getting up to 70 or more on the freeway. I keep it to 65 and under because it's better for the car, but again, the engine is strong and reliable. I have made trips of 200 to 300 miles with no trouble. For a long time I was driving about 60 miles a day round trip, 5 days a week for work. As I said, this is a great car--I love it, but if I take it with me to Minnesota, it would rust to pieces after a few winters. This car would be excellent for restoration, since it is already in good shape and would be completely drivable while the work was being done. I hope the right person gets it. Thanks! By the way--I will be driving from Los Angeles to Minneapolis starting January 4th. I'll be heading across Arizona, texas, etc, then up through Iowa and Kansas City. Delivery would be a possibility if the buyer paid for the trailer and part of the vehicle cost. Contact if that's of interest.
