Vehicle Detail
***Images were just updated to show this vehicle in the daylight. I felt the evening shots did not do her justice.*** Up for auction is my 1989 Mercedes 420 SEL. I purchased this car from the original Southern California owners (2 owners, one family) just recently. Originally purchased from Johnson Motorcars, this beautiful car has been garaged every day of it's life, and it shows. It is 100% original down to the paint and has never been damaged. As you can see, it shows literally "as-new", and it is. They kept sun shades, seat covers, and extra floor mats in the car since new. The original owners were an elderly couple and only used the car for short drives. I do not think they even carried a passenger in the back seat. Even the interior shows "as new" right down to the high gloss wood. Even the console wood is like new, indicating no sun exposure. The dash has never seen any Armor-all or dressing and is like new. The indicators on the gauge cluster are deep orange. The inside is absolutely a 10 out of 10. The mechanical part of the car is also in prime condition. As you can see, even the original gold cad plating and factory cosmoline preservative are still present on the engine. I have had several nice Mercedes, but never have I see one this nice. The engine block, transmission, and drive-line are clean and smooth. No odd noises or lifter rattle out of the engine, just smooth, quiet, and tight. The transmission shifts properly and goes immediately into reverse or drive with no, or the regular older Mercedes model's, shift delay. Even the starter has a very unique, tight, fast sound. Car is fully serviced and ready to drive and enjoy. The climate control works perfect and the fan is whisper quiet. All electrical is functioning properly. Steering and suspension are tight, quiet, and in need of NO work. The cleanliness of the engine bay continue through the complete suspension and undercarriage. All of the suspension hardware is still gold cad plated and due to full garage time, show no signs of corrosion. Truly amazing!! You can even see the painted color bars on the springs and the wheel-wells are bright white. All weatherstripping is perfect, the trunk is "as new", and the original tool kit is complete and still sealed in the factory shipping plastic bag. The radio has been upgraded to a top of the line Sony with CD and sounds amazing. Sunroof works perfect. Windows show no damage or scratches and appear new. Beautiful aluminum trim. Perfect grill. All of this due to diligent care and full time garage storage. The only small issues are as follows: Tires have great tread and are Goodyear Eagles, but seem a little flat spotted when cold. This car had been sitting for 2 years in the garage with only occasional movement in and out of the garage. For general use, they are great, but if you were going to drive her across the country, I might replace them. Up to you. There are a couple of small parking lot door dings on the sides, but small and can't be noticed unless you eyeball down the sides. White makes them disappear. They absolutely do not detract from her beauty. The left rear bumper edge behind the tire, where it wraps around the body, has been rubbed thin and there is some paint loss. Just the top edge. They must have scuffed it and somebody was a little too rough with compound. Can be touched up easy by any body shop. No damage, just thin paint on that small top edge.Thin spot in the paint on the right rear quarter panel, just in front of the taillight. About the size of a golf ball. Must have been the same guy with the compound. Hard to notice and any shop can airbrush it in easy if you desire, but hard to notice unless you look hard. The antenna goes up sometimes, and sometimes the motor runs and the antenna stays down. The mast is shiny and looks as new, but these Hirschmann antenna masts are notoriously poor and probably should be replaced. Other than those small things, which really are just nit-picking at a beautiful car, she is stunning. I have had several compliments on her in just a few weeks of driving. She really shows like new. This is an opportunity to purchase a beautiful vehicle in very rare condition. The car comes with all original books, records, and original dealer packet. Even the original first aid kit has never been opened. Heads and shoulders above the rest of the 420's around. This car is in the top 1% of these cars left anywhere. If you are looking for an original Southern California world class Mercedes, this is it. A truly fully documented, pedigree car. ****Just passed California smog and comes with certificate** Thank You!
