Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a 1960 Metropolitan Model 1500 Hardtop Coupe, vin # E73325. This model has all of the final improvements implemented by AMC on the Metropolitan such as the larger wheel spindles, the more powerful, higher-compression A-55 (Austin) engine, lower axle ratio, opening trunk lid and side vent windows. This happy little red and white classic is very fun and economical to drive, (it sips regular 87-octane gas), and has been a joy to own. I am in the process of restoring a pre-war car, and sadly need to let this one go. As you can see in the photos, the car is definitely an eye-catcher and looks nice, but it is not in show-winning condition. It was cosmetically re-done about 20 years ago, and has had mechanical restoration as well in order to make it a reliable daily driver. The car has been covered since I have owned it. It has been in California for well over 20 years, if not since new --- and is very solid underneath. I have performed a good deal of maintenance work, and the car is a very dependable little driver. The odometer shows 22,175 miles, but that may have been re-set when the engine was rebuilt by a previous owner. I have rebuilt the brake system, including the master cylinder and wheel cylinders, rebuilt the clutch hydraulics and clutch plate, shocks, starter, steering box, motor and transmission mounts, ignition/headlight switch, fuse box, tires and battery. The engine runs beautifully and the transmission shifts as it should. I can drive this car all day at 60-65 with no problems, and the engine temperature gauge remains at a nice, cool 160-175 degrees. The car has been freeway-driven from Anaheim to Palm Springs and many other places numerous times with no issues. Regardless of driving in the desert heat or in stop-and-go Los Angeles freeway traffic, there has been no overheating whatsoever. A few items could still be addressed, such as: the radio plays, but the antenna is loose. I don't ever use the heater here in southern California, but the fan isn't working. There are a few rattles that could be quieted. The wiper motor was replaced, but it is a bit noisy. The red carpet is presentable, as is the interior, but again, these are not in show-winning shape. Some bright work could be re-plated. One of the joys of owning a "Met" is that all of the over 14,000+ parts that go into the manufacture of this car are readily available through various Metropolitan-specific suppliers, making restoration a relatively simple process. This little guy gets a lot of grins, thumbs-up and compliments from other drivers and pedestrians of all ages, and I have been proud to take him to car club events, shows, to my workplace, or just to do errands. Please feel free to ask questions. Happy Bidding!
