Vehicle Detail
1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster This car is all here but in need of total restoration or can be used as a parts car. It is an interesting story of how the car got to this state. We lived next to a very eccentric man who never sold any of his vehicles. When he was done with one and bought another, the old one was simply parked in the woods behind his barn and left to rot. This T-Bird was purchased new by his father in 1962 and driven for a couple years by the father who passed away not long after buying the car. It was then driven by our neighbor as a second/weekend car until the gas crisis in the early 1970’s. At that time, he figured the car used too much fuel and he would buy something more efficient. He parked this outback one afternoon with the top down and never drove it again! My father would go over and put tarps on it to try and preserve it but that could only do so much. And the owner never let us move it (we actually offered to store it indoors but he wanted it right there). About 20 years or so ago, for some reason, he had a body shop tow the car out and repair the rust on the body and put a coat of red paint on it. I guess it was a sorry attempt to help preserve what was left. Well the owner passed away about 10 years ago and the cars were all left to his wife. She had every one (there were about 12 of them in the woods) except the T-Bird towed away for scrap. I was given the Thunderbird as she knew we always had admired that car and hoped to one day restore it. At that point, we towed the car to our indoor warehouse were it sat until this week. About 10 years ago we actually played around with the car before putting in storage and had the engine running as well as getting the trunk and convertible top to operate. But don’t be fooled – this car needs a total, 110% restoration. We just do not have the time for this project. The body is OK as I mentioned above but there is a fair amount of rust on the floor, in the engine compartment etc… Introduced in 1962, the Ford Thunderbird offered a limited production option produced for only 2 years called the “Sports Roadster Package”. It included a special fiberglass tonneau cover to completely cover the rear seats making the car appear as a 2-seater roadster. To highlight this option, the car also received chrome Kelsey Hayes 48-spoke wire wheels (we have 5 of them) and special Roadster emblems as standard equipment. The soft top was designed to fully operate without the removal of the tonneau. Additionally, storage space underneath the tonneau allowed for personal items to be concealed on top of the rear seats. Only 1,427 Sports roadsters were produced in 1962. From what we can tell, this car has the 390ci engine. The car has 36,735 original miles! I cannot document that other than the fact that the car was driven on weekends for less than 10 years and never moved again (you can verify that by the condition it is in)! We do not have the title for the car. The wife who had given me the car always said she had it but she never got around to giving it to me. She has since passed away and the gentleman who handled the estate has no knowledge of any paperwork for the car. I would rather not deal with the state in an attempt to get a reconstructed title so I am selling the car as is with only a bill of sale. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions and feel free to come see the car if you would like. It is located in Bucks County, PA (about ½ hour north of Philadelphia). Thanks for looking! On Nov-07-10 at 17:42:31 PST, seller added the following information: I have had a lot of questions about VIN so I located the data plate and got the following info which indicates the car is a factory Sports Roadster: Serial # 2Y85Z109024 Body 76A Color J Trim 56 Date 29J Axle 1, Trans 4 *Please see the picture of the plate I added below. ThanksOn Nov-12-10 at 09:45:42 PST, seller added the following information: I just want to be clear as I have been receiving a lot of questions about this car. It sat in the mud for about 30 years and the floor is rotted as a result. The front has a few spots through the floor and the rear of the floor has some major spots all the way through. Also, I am still receiving inquiries about being a genuine sports roadster. The serial number validates appropriately and the wire wheels along with tonneau cover were factory. Along with these, there are the mounting holes on front fender and the tonneau cover for the unique sports roadster emblems. Emblems are gone but the mounting holes are all there. The passenger grab bar (unique to sports roadsters) is also in place. Hope this helps! Thanks!!
