This Cartercar is in very good shape and ready to add to any collection, or, with a little bit of work, cruise in your local parade. Don't miss your chance to bid on this beautiful example of early 1900's history. You may never have another chance. The California Automobile Museum Presents........... 1912 CARTERCAR MODEL R ROADSTER A little history, 1905-1906 The Motorcar Company, Jackson, Michigan.1906-1908 The Motorcar Company, Detriot, Michigan.1908-1915 The Cartercar Company, Pontiac, Michigan. One of the thousands of automobile companies that have dropped into obscurity since the beginning of the century, Cartercar was founded in 1906 by Byron J. Carter (1863-1908) who had offered the Carter steam car in 1901 and had then incorporated the Jackson Automobile Company. A skilled mechanic, Carter had developed a special friction transmission which, according to him, was infinitely superior to anything else on the market. Carter had been experimenting with horseless carriages since before the turn of the century, in his native Jackson, Michigan. He felt that the number of drive speeds should be left up to the driver not his cars transmission. In 1907 the Cartercar Company was born. The Cartercar was extremely well received by the press and aggressively promoted as the car of "A thousand speeds ... no clutch to slip ... no gears to strip ... no universal joints to break ... no shaft drive to twist ... no bevel gears to wear and howl ... no noise to annoy.". After 4,000 miles the paper fiber rims could be replaced for about three to five dollars. Tragedy struck when Byron Carter was killed in April 1908 while trying to start a stalled car; the crank kicked back and hit him in the jaw, causing gangrene, (others say pneumonia), which ultimately proved fatal. Carter was a personal friend of Cadillac founder Henry Leland, and his unfortunate death prompted development of the Self-Starter (introduced in 1912), the first successful motor vehicle electric starting system, eliminating the dangerous crank. In 1909 the Cartercar Company became one of almost thirty firms bought up by Billy Durant, head of General Motors. Durant had lost control of General Motors in 1910 and did not regain it until September 1915, by which time it was too late to save Cartercar even if he had wanted to. Following the power struggle at GM, the new board ordered the Cartercar plant closed on May 22nd, 1915. Durant had bought the Cartercar for its friction drive, and of all the friction drive cars built in the U.S., Cartercar was the most famous, the most successful, and the longest lived. Initially all Cartercars were two cylinder engines, by 1910 all were powered by four cylinder units. “Simplicity and Silence will characterize the 1912 Cartercar” began the copy in the company’s advertising brochure of that year. But however simple and quiet the machine may have been in operation, no automobile of the era enjoyed a more complicated and elaborate promotional campaign. In an age when most automobile manufacturers were content to draw public attention by fielding a racing team and running an occasional advertisement in Leslie’s or The Saturday Evening Post, the Cartercar Company ran out a line of ballyhoo with a vigor that most of its competitors wouldn’t adopt for years. In the begining, promoting his Friction drive, Carter set about demonstrating its virtues—and those of the car he built around it—with exceptional energy. Carter made no claims for the speed of his auto; what he was selling was strength, toughness, and flexibility. He sent his car to state fairs, ran it up library steps and down cog railway inclines, lashed it to massive traction engines, and bulled it ahead through snowstorms. He had every accomplishment photographed, and ran the pictures in his brochures. Occasionally, Carter would manufacture a bizarre situation to show special virtues of his machine: its ease in starting was demonstrated by the midget Count Magri, who cranked it up while his wife, General Tom Thumb’s widow, looked on; its supernatural smoothness allowed Mr. Doan, a tightrope walker, to teeter his way over ten miles of countryside on a rope fixed above the body of the auto. Carter’s campaign was effective enough to sway at least one highly knowledgeable car owner. As mentioned above, William Durant, the founder of General Motors, was so impressed by the frictionless drive that in 1909 he bought the patent and the company. Initially Cartercars were offered in two single cylinder models, the 6.5 and 7.5hp, and a 10hp twin, the latter being progressively enlarged up to 1909, when the largest was quoted as a 22/24hp. In 1906, 101 cars were made and 325 in 1908. From 1910 all Cartercars had 4 cylinder engines, a 25 and 35hp in 1910, growing in size to the 45hp Model S of 1912, on a 122 inch wheelbase. Closed coupes and sedans were offered as well as open cars from 1912, and a friction drive was featured up to the end of May 1915. It is believed that only about 25-30 Cartercars survive today. This Cartercar's Story, This Cartercar looks to be complete. There has been some restoration done over the years but there is no documentation or proof of what was done. The Cartercar is not currently running, and no efforts have been made to see why or what it would take to get it in running condition. The engine does seem to have compression and aside from that compression, it turns over freely. The current owner of this Cartercar purchased it in November 2005 from a local person in Orangevale, Ca. The woman from which he purchased the Cartercar, had owned it since 1964 and kept it stored in her garage from the point of purchase to the point of sale. Prior to her, the owner was a Mr. Earl White of Aurora, Nebraska. Aside from an official California Statement of Facts, no other documentation of ownership history is known to exist. Additionally, ownership prior to Mr. White has not established. The sale of this car will include books as shown in the photos. There are no additional parts or information available other than what is listed in this ad. The engine is a four cylinder, 4160cc believed to be the 40hp version; The transmission is the famous Carter friction drive; The suspension: semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear; The brakes: two wheel drum and as seen in the photos, this Cartercar is a Right hand drive. The California Automobile Museum Presents...........

1912 CARTERCAR MODEL R ROADSTER

A little history,

1905-1906 The Motorcar Company, Jackson, Michigan.
1906-1908 The Motorcar Company, Detriot, Michigan.
1908-1915 The Cartercar Company, Pontiac, Michigan.

This Cartercar's Story,

This Cartercar looks to be complete.

We try our best to clearly describe the condition of the vehicle, but please note that we are often selling cars that are either donated to us, or are on consignment and we may not have a complete history. You are welcome to inspect the vehicle or send a representative in your place during or after the listing's end. Vehicles are sold as is with no warranty implied.

Please contact us with any questions about inspection, payment, or vehicle pickup.

The California Automobile Museum in Sacramento is the oldest non-profit auto museum in California. We sell cars which have been donated or consigned for sale through our vehicle program. Proceeds go directly to support cultural and educational activities provided by the museum to the Northern California community.

We are both a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable corporation and a licensed dealer in California. Please contact us for additional information regarding donating or consigning your vehicle for sale.

This auction is a legally binding contract to buy this vehicle. All vehicles are sold as-is unless otherwise specified. I have done my best to accurately describe this vehicle. It is up to the buyer to come see and further inspect the car before the end of the auction.-->
