Vehicle Detail
Beetle Mania 1979 Volkswagen Beatle Epilog Edition. Last Model Off Of The Line In Germany THE “EPILOG” WAS THE LAST SPECIAL EDITION PRODUCED AT THE KARMANN PLANT IN OSNABRUCK, GERMANY The “Epilog” has a black body, black interior, black top with white liner and white visors. This car also has the non-standard sports wheels that were fitted to many of the last cabriolets to leave the production line. Also, the "Epilog" included a radio and speakers as standard equipment. The antenna is chrome and has a black base with the VW emblem. 1979 Type 1 convertibles were produced in Onasbruckfrom Aug 78 - Dec 79 with production continuing to January 10, 1980 to fill existing orders. The 1979 Type 1 chassis numbers were 1592000001- 1592043634. Epilogs were produced after chassis number 1592029000, but, not all after that number were "Epilog" editions. No "Epilog" editions were made before Chassis Number 1592029000. The last “Epilog” was produced January 10, 1980. This chassis number (VIN) is 1592039629 See all detailed Pictures at Bottom of Page Vehicle Origin This Cabriolet was purchased from the original owner in 1987 and has always been garage kept. The car is all original and was purchased from the original showroom purchaser who resided in Oregon prior to moving to Ft. Lauderdale where the car was purchased by the existing owner of the car in 1987. Brief History VW CABRIOLET (BEETLE) HISTORY The VW Beetle racked up a number of most impressive accomplishments, amongst them being the longest running and best selling single model in the history of the automobile. The irony of history is that the VOLKSWAGEN is one of two things – the AUTOBAHN being the other – for which Germans can thank their infamous leader – Adolph Hitler. Hitler selected Dr. Ferdinand Porsche in 1934 to design the VOLKSWAGEN, a small “people’s car”. It would have to deliver good fuel economy yet hold a family of four to five, cruise at speeds of 100 kph (62.5 mph), utilize engine air cooling for easy maintenance and sell for 1000 Reichmark (approximately $400.00). The production of this model was assigned to a fine German coachbuilder with tradition, the KARMANN factory in Osnabruck. Founded at the turn of the century in 1901 KARMANN had built cars for many famous carmakers, both national and international; Adler, Buick, Citreon, Chrysler, Mercedes, and Opal were just a few examples. The factory after became best known for the production of the Karman Ghia which was introduced in 1955. Production was delayed by World War II. In 1949 the first two VWs were imported to the US. The first regular, 4 seat Cabriolet version of the Beetle appeared in 1950. These cars proved very popular, as the model was produced in Germany until 1979. In 1968 many design changes were made. Additionally, new emission laws in the US caused anti-emission systems and catalytic converters to be added. Many felt the car had lost a lot of its character that endeared it to millions. During the late 70s the Beetle’s popularity ebbed severely. VW attempted to issue several special edition Beetles, but the reign of the German-built Beetles was over. The last German-built rolled off the line in Osnabruck on January 10th 1980. Today, however, the original Beetle is still produced in Mexico. It remains a very popular car in that country but does not meet US emission laws and cannot be legally imported here. The Beetle holds the world record for production nearing 23 million produced. Doug (386) 679-6226 or badfishmarine@gmail.com Vehicle Inspection This car is all original, besides the typical tune up and filter parts, the only other parts I know to have been replaced have been as follows: (all OEM parts)*except radio Speedometer cable Fuel Gauge components behind gauge Clips that hold Sun Visors in place *Radio was replaced around 1987 Imperfections: Speaker covers are cracked around bottom screw holes Tires are at 3/4's of their life Small rust spots far less than major for a 79’ Front Right Hood Hinge needs some repair Fuel Pump Relay will be intermittent at times Headliner due to be replaced Overall Review This car has lived a life, but a gentle one. The compression on the engine held together below 10% separation between cylinders . There is no sign of a rebuild in the near future of this engine. The overall condition of the car is excellent as we all have seen many refurbishments and time worn cars of its kind. This car is defiantly a premium collector’s item to be had. May the best bidder love this car for a very long time.
