Vehicle Detail
This 1950 Chevy truck project started as a hot rod-steration with a truck transported from Kansas. This is a total frame off effort, not a restoration, but my attempt to build a truck that was fun to drive, turned heads, could be taken to car shows and attract crowds but not so pristine that a few bugs on the bumper would be a crisis. This is a driver and a “hot rod” not a “street rod” with no a/c, power windows, and other luxury items. The truck has about 400 miles on it since completion. Check out the videos below! The sound is a little delayed, but it gives you a good representation of how it sounds. Photo Sharing - Video Sharing - Photo Printing Photo Sharing - Video Sharing - Photo Printing The truck rides basically as good as a 1950 farm truck was designed to, as the front end is stock as opposed to an independent front end. All of the work with the exception of the body work, wiring and paint was done by the owner as this was not a check-book ride. I have an album full of pictures from the day the truck arrived to the present day. Frame: As mentioned the stock truck was dismantled to the frame which was sandblasted and painted with POR-15 followed by a gray chassis color by Eastwood. The brakes were rebuilt, new brake lines run, and the stock springs on all four corners were ditched in favor of lighter and lower appearing one piece springs. Engine/Transmission: The six cylinder was removed and a fresh 350 Chevy was installed complete with the services of master race car engine builder, Barry Messer. A Pete Jackson gear drive was installed (love the whining of the gears) plus upgrades were made on the ignition, carb, headers, dual exhaust with cut-outs (really loud) and lots more. The transmission, automatic, was installed with a safety loop to a used Chevy rear end unit. The transmission is leaking fluid from one area which needs attention. Body: The cab underwent a major transformation including a four inch chop of the roofline, new glass front and back, a new hood found in a barn, again in Kansas (still in the original gm box) reworked fenders, a custom bumper, new grill, doors with shaved handles, and new headlamp bezels. The cab received the same treatment from sandblasting to POR to filling holes in the firewall for a smooth appearance. Interior: The dash was outfitted with new AutoMeter gauges and a Painless wiring kit. Two racing seats with 5 point harnesses were added in place of the factory bench seat. There isn't a radio as this is a hot rod, not a street rod. The headliner needs to be glued back up. The bed is a 1989 Chevy half ton bed which everyone says flows well with the 1950 design up front. Again, the taillights were filled in, gas cap cover the same, a roll pan was added and a wood/carpeted insert was made to hold the battery and fuel cell. Pontiac tail-lights with blue dots were grafted into the tailgate which also had the handle filled, and an inside handle installed. Tires/Wheels: Mickey Thompson “fat n skinnies” were installed with chrome reverse wheels and baby moons.
