Vehicle Detail
This an opportunity to own a beautiful Corvair. I purchased this Corvair off of a family friend about a year ago. She is the widow of the original owner. The car was purchased at Felix Chevrolet in the spring of 1961. It was purchased as a 3rd car, mostly because it was "cute". He always drove a Cadillac, but fell in love with this car one day when he drove past the dealership. The car was driven sparingly over the next 10 years and always garaged in San Pedro. It was eventually left under cover in the garage for almost 30 years and forgotten about. He and his wife decided one day that they would like to drive the little Corvair again, so they commissioned Harrison's in Los Angeles to restore her to her former beauty. The car received a beautiful show and drive restoration. Here is a list of the work performed: Complete strip and re-finish in original color with original laquer paint-hand rubbed. All new weatherstripping and seals, grommets, etc.New front and rear glass seals (under stainless) as glass was removed for painting.New tinted windshieldAll new or re-finished chrome and stainless trim. All new or NOS emblemsNew NOS hubcapsNew lenses and housingsAll new complete Clark's interior, including; all cardboard panels, dash, seats, headliner, etc.Carpet is original and beautiful!!Gauge cluster restored and lens replaced, looks "as-new" with no fading and bright indicators.Dash chrome is all original and very nice. All interior metal was stripped, and repainted the original metallic tan high gloss, every piece! All window mechanisms, lock and latch units, etc. restored and working perfect.Trunk completely restored5 brand new Coker WWW original style tiresNew NOS visorsOriginal 2 tone steering wheel in beautiful shape reflecting the low miles.Mechanical: Original engine completely rebuilt and restored by a Corvair specialist in Los Angeles w/receipt of $5,800 for engine alone!Rebuilt Power glide transmission4 new Delco "gold" shocksAll new brakes, wheel cyl., soft lines, drums, bearings, etc.New, NOS steering boxNew front suspension bushings and strut rod bushingsNew fuel tank, sending unit, lines, etc.New heater hoses and ductingNew complete exhaust systemCleaned and detailed complete under chassis and suspension even with original factory spring color bars!New U-joints and outer wheel bearingsEtc, etc. There are many more small details performed on her to make her look absolutely "new" as if she just rolled off the showroom floor. I do have many of the receipts and talking to the family, over $42,000 was spent on her. You may think that for a car with only 21K original miles why would it need so much work. It really didn't, they just wanted it to look as it did when they bought it and spared no expense to get it there. It has always been absolutely rust free, as it never sat outside and didn't see sunlight for nearly 30 years. When it was sent to restoration, it was still rolling on it's original tires! The restoration was finished about 8 years ago. They drove the car for just a few months here and there on weekends before he became ill and passed away. The car then sat again, for a while, covered in her original garage. To this day, the restoration has stood up very well and she still looks very crisp and new. There are a couple of small nicks hear and there, but you have to look for them. The chassis still looks beautiful, but is a little dusty and may need a little touching up if you care too (I think it still looks great). The engine runs beautifully, but does drip just a couple of drops now and then, probably from sitting. Trans. shifts perfect. Differential seems a little noisy, but grease level was checked and it was clean and full. May need to just be driven. Turn signal switch is a little touchy and tends to click when you turn the wheel, at times. The front bumper has a small area where the plating was thin, but you have to look to see it. There are some other various small aging, but all in all, she would still win local shows and draws a crowd whenever we drive her. Most people feel it looks like it is absolutely new, not restored. Radio plays/works on and off, but lights up well. May need to be cleaned inside? This car is not your average "restoration", she miles above that. You couldn't restore a clean car to this condition for 4 times the reserve in this day and age. I have done my very best to describe her, but keep in mind that everybody's opinions are different. I have owned and collected over 30 rare Corvairs over the last 20 years and this is the finest one I have ever owned. We need to sell her as we no longer have storage for her and do not want her sitting outside. The best deal you will ever find on a beautiful professional restoration, top of the line Corvair coupe. Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to buy a 21K original mile, never out of Southern California, fully restored Corvair!
