Vehicle Detail
I am offering my 1992 Mercedes Benz 300TE Wagon (W124) for sale. I have owned this vehicle for just over a year. I bought it for my wife who has since purchased a new vehicle. I am driving it at the present time. I have done a tremendous amount of work on the vehicle since I bought it. That work includes but is not necessarilly limited to the following. Immediately after purchase I replaced the engine mounts (noticed a little vibration). Replaced the Muffler and Muffler Resonator, Rear Brake Pads and some decorative trim pieces. Lower Ball Joints Front Left and Right along with the control arm bushings have been replaced along with alignment at the Mercedes Benz dealer (no more squeak and drives and steers great). The carpeting was a bit soiled when I purchased. I cleaned it a few times and just wasn't satisfied so this Winter I removed the interior and carpeting. Cleaned the floor pans (no rust anywhere). I dyed the carpeting with professional auto carpet dye after cleaning them thoroughly. This took about 3 weeks to complete. At that time the seats (which had been removed) were cleaned and the seat frames were repainted. All hardware was cleaned and reinstalled. All broken plastic trim pieces were replaced with new. The wood at the ashtray and center console were cracked and not looking to fresh so I had them upholstered with gray vinyl (much easier to keep clean and they will not ever crack again). The carpet looks like new (I priced new and it was $1300 from Germany). A Kenwood CD Stereo was installed with remote and all wiring installed for a future amp and subwoofers. All door panels were removed and reworked/repaired as necessary and re-installed. They are good for another 20 years (some of the rivets that hold the armrests were broken, they were replaced with screws and are better than new from the factory). The carpeting in the rear cargo area where the third seat goes was replaced and the wood backing cleaned and repainted. The engine compartment has been thoroughly cleaned and new hood insulation installed. The Breather and Valve Cover were removed, cleaned, and repainted. The Distributor Cap, Rotor, and Points were replaced (this was more complicated than the old cars I used to work on). The interior of the car looks like new. I had it inspected recently and the Mercedes Benz Mech couldn't believe how clean the car is. But as beautiful as the car is there are a few things that still need to be done. The Mercedes Mech stated that the Brake fluid was dirty and should be flushed and replaced. I have not done this yet. Lastly, he noted that the Rear Differential Side Seals were leaking and may need replacing. These cost about $5 apiece. I had not planned on making this repair in the near future. I have not noticed any dripping in the driveway or garage. Lastly, the reverse gear is slipping. It does engage but it will only back up on a flat surface or downhill. This is an annoyance to me but does not render the car undriveable. I planned on driving it for a while before laying out the cash to repair. I have taken it to three shops including Mercedes Benz. They wanted to replace it with either a new one or a used one with a limited warranty. The other two transmission shops advised that a rebuild would be necessary. The degree of the rebuild is unknown until the transmission is pulled apart. A diagnostic test reveals that there are not problems with any electric components so the problem is inside. Most likely the bands slipping or lack of pressure on the clutches is what I have been told. All of the forward gears are operating just fine. I wanted to get more life out of those before a rebuild. The problem for me is that my job requires me to ride through neighborhoods, inspecting homes and taking photographs. Not being able to back up is sometimes more than an inconvenience. I have driven the car this way for months now and will continue to do so if I don't sell it. That being said, the engine runs like a top and doesn't miss a beat. All electrical seems just fine with the exception of the courtesy lights on the rear driver door. The cruise control seems to engage but doesn't stay on. I haven't had time to check this out. Sunroof works just fine and does not leak. Door locks work well and so does the security alarm. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will answer the best I can. On Aug-18-10 at 11:10:06 PDT, seller added the following information: Just realized from a recent inquiry that I forgot to mention that I had the AC serviced a couple of weeks ago. Recharged and checked at same local Mercedes Dealership/Maintenance Shop. AC is working correctly and is charged, however the mech. did note that the auxillary fans on the front of the radiator were not working correctly. He recommended that they be replaced. They come on when the car is sitting still to help keep the engine cool while the AC is running. I haven't drive the car for a couple of weeks and forgot this, sorry. I checked on the cost for the two fans and I can get them as cheap as $45 each and as high as $150 each. I believe this is an easy fix and would do it myself. A couple of the nice gentlemen on Mercedes Forum gave me the instructions for replacing (by the way this is a great website to visit for information and help on repairs/maintenance).On Aug-20-10 at 13:01:39 PDT, seller added the following information: Just realized that I also have a McGeorge Mercedes Preferred Customer Card that is transferable and will be included. It is good for 15% off service and parts up to $500 (I used it when I serviced the AC so it is slightly less than $500 now). It can even be used towards the purchase of a new car. Good luck folks and I appreciate all of you who have placed my car into your watched items list.
