Vehicle Detail
April 1980, the United States mens hockey team has just won Olympic Gold, the Pittsburgh Steelers are Super Bowl XIV Champs, and the GM plant in Norwood, Ohio is putting the finishing touches on one special Camaro. The order calls for a loaded up, air conditioned, T-Top equipped, factory four speed Z28 in the ultimate color combination of Black on Tan. The original owner checked nearly every box when it came to building the ultimate 'Z'. Camaro special order number 54,064 was assembled with the following factory options: RPO Description Cars ordrered with Retail Price 1FQ87 Camaro Z28 Sport Coupe 45,137 7,121.32 AU3 Power Door Locks 27,484 93.00 A01 Soft Ray Tinted Glass, all windows 130,570 68.00 A31 Power Windows 44,716 143.00 A51 Bucket Seat std B80 Molding - Roof Drip 73,349 26.00 B84 Molding - Body Side 56,742 46.00 B89 Ornamentation - Reveal Molding (Z28) B94 Exterior Ornament (z28) B97 rr whl spoiler (z28) CC1 Roof Panels, removable glass 24,816 695.00 CD4 Windshield Wipers, intermittent 34,285 41.00 C49 Defogger, rear window 78,113 107.00 C60 Air Conditioning 107,175 566.00 D35 Mirrors, sport right and left remote exterior 63,572 46.00 D80 Spoiler, rear 29,820 62.00 D88 Z28 Stripes GU4 Axle - Rear (3.08 Ratio) G80 Rear Axle, limited slip (positraction) 17,655 68.00 J50 Power Brakes (included with Z28) 94,250 81.00 LM1 Engine, 350ci, 190hp V8 (required Z28) 41,825 nc MM4 Transmission, 4-speed wide range 12,237 144.00 N65 Spare Tire, Space-Saver 36,799 nc P06 Wheel Trim Ring (std. on Z28) QGR Tires, P225/70 x 15 white letter (Z28) T93 Special tail lamp (Z28) UM2 Radio, AM-FM with stereo tape 18,196 272.00 U35 Clock, electric 9,513 25.00 VK3 Mounting - Front License Plate ZJ7 Rally Wheels 55,232 100.00 Z28 Special Performance Package 45,137 There was only one color choice in the original owners mind, it had to be Black. The original Body by Fisher tag decodes as following: 80: Year: 1980 04D: Build Date: Fourth week of April 1FP87: Body Type: Camaro Sport Coupe N: Assembly Pant: Norwood, OH 098455: Body Sequence Number 62R: Interior Trim: Tan Vinyl 19L: Lower Body Color: Black 19U: Upper Body Color: Black 55A: Body Stripes: Gold L: Paint Type: Lacquer A51: Bucket Seats CC1: T-Tops A31: Power Windows Z28: Special Performance Package Fast forward to the present. This is the same loaded up, air-conditioned, factory T-Top , Black on Tan, 350CI, 4 speed, posi, Z28 Camaro with a mere 57,108 miles on the odometer. It is like stepping back in time. This special Z has averaged less than 2K miles per year in it's thirty year lifespan. It has been meticulously cared for since day one. The body and undercarriage are in great shape, as the pictures clearly show, including the factory applied code 19 lacquer paint and Z28 stripes. It shows unbelieveably well and is a true testament to it's meticulous care. The original code 62 Tan Vinyl seats, dashpad, door panels, and carpet show excellent. The factory T-Tops and GM weatherstrip are in great condition. All factory options including the C60 air conditioning operate as new. The only upgrade is a remote controlled AM/FM radio, CD player to enhance the experience. The sound system is a welcome addition, and sounds great. The factory original AM/FM radio is included with the car. Mechanically this low mile Z28 runs like you would expect an honest 57K mile car would. The original 190HP, 350CI engine, mated to it's Muncie M20 4 speed, and 10 bolt rearend perform flawlessly. Tasteful Day Two performance upgrades include headers, and a stainlees steel exhaust system, Edelbrock valve covers, and a Hurst shifter combined to enhance the driving experience. Recent maintenance includes brakes, air conditioning service, system blows ice cold, and radial performance tires. It truly is a "kick in the pants" to drive. The factory Air Induction system is 100 percent stock and performs just like it did in April of 1980. In 1980 Chevrolet produced 152,005 Camaros. Only 12,237 were ordered with a four speed transmission. That's a mere Eight percent. And of the 152,005 only 16,291 were ordered with Code 19 Black paint. That represents a mere ten percent of Camaros ordered. How many are left? Better yet, how many original, low mile, factory air-conditioned, T-Top, loaded up, Z28's with a factory 4 speed exist today? And still wearing it's original Code 19 Black lacquer paint? 1980 also marked the last year that a 4 speed could be ordered with a 350ci American delivered second generation Camaro. It also brought the horsepwer rating to it's highest point since 1974. If you have been searching for a REAL, low mile, high option, original Z28 in the ultimate color combination, this is the one for you.
