Vehicle Detail
1979 Volvo 262C Bertone Coupe in very good to excellent, original condition with 71,918 indicated miles on the 6 digit odometer: except the original V-6 Renault motor has been replaced with a 1968 Ford 302 small block backed up with a C4 automatic transmission. The installation is exceptionally clean and neat and is not cobbled in any way. Numbers on the engine block are C8AE6015-B. This motor gives the 262C the power that the 3200 pound car never had available with the original V6 motor. This was the third year of a five year run for this first Volvo attempt at a luxury sedan. Total production for all five years is reported as something over 6600 vehicles with only 2120 being made in 1979. Based on the 262GL sedan and influenced by the Lincoln Mark coupes that Ford personnel brought to Sweden in the early 70's, the 262C was assembled in Italy by Bertone using a Peugeot/Renault/Volvo 2.6 liter, overhead cam motor. With four wheel disc brakes and a very good power assisted rack and pinion steering system, the coupe handled very well although a bit under powered because of its weight. The problem, outside of the love it or hate it styling, was that the $15,000 price tag in 1977, rising to almost $20,000 in 1981, put the coupe in BMW and Mercedes price territory, a market that Volvo was not used to competing in. The net result today is that for a very moderate investment, you can have a low production, semi collector car that will maintain its value for quite some time. This particular Bertone coupe has been a western car originally and has spent most of its recent years in eastern Washington, which is dry country: consequently there is no rust anywhere on the body. The black leather interior is all original and in very good condition except for one tear in the driver's side seat back. The dash, carpeting, rear deck and headliner are all original and in excellent condition. The factory Volvo stereo with cassette player is original and works fine. All gauges work and the steering wheel is in very good condition. On the exterior, the padded roof is in excellent condition with no evident wear. All chrome is in excellent condition with no dents and only nominal scuffs here and there. All glass is in good condition with no cracks or chips. All exterior lights, trim and mouldings are original and in very good shape. The paint appears to be original and in good condition except for the hood which has a couple of chips/cracks that indicates that the hood has been repainted at sometime in the past. The wheels are the original Volvo wheels with tires that are 80% good. The brakes appear to be nearly new. The AC has been converted to R134. A full service has recently been completed on this car, including fluid changes, cooling system cleaning, plugs, points, cap and rotor replacement, setting the timing and dwell. This is not a hot rod, just a solid, Swedish car, with unique looks that you wouldn't hesitate to take across the country on a trip. Clear Washington title in my name. Transportation or delivery is the responsibility of the purchaser, and I will assist in any reasonable manner. If you require additional pictures or information, please ask. On Jul-25-10 at 21:16:10 PDT, seller added the following information: It has been pointed out to me that it wasn't until 1980 that Volvo two toned the Bertones. The upper grey two tone scheme has apparently been added at some point in the past. This car is originally all silver with a dark landau top. If you have bid on this Volvo and that causes problems for you, please let me know and we can delete your bid. Sorry about that.
