Vehicle Detail

THIS IS A RARE PROJECT CAR IT DOES NOT DRIVE AND WILL NEED TO BE HAULED HOME For those of you who are hardcore AMC fans you already know what this car is. For those of you who have never heard of an AMC Rebel Raider this will be something of a history lesson. Back in 1969 AMC produced only 300 of these cars in a 2 door hardtop configuration the top being vinyl with a black interior, a sport steering wheel, 343 Typhoon V8 with a 4-barrel, a 3 speed automatic, power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning. What makes this car interesting is that it was only sold in the New York and New Jersey area as a "regional special" car. In fact the release of this car was coordinated with the 1969 New York Auto Show in order to show the new bright colors that were being released. Most AMC fans will know these bright colors as Big Bad Green, Big Bad Blue, and Big Bad Orange (released in mid 1969). However, when this car was released it was before they were called the big bad colors (early 1969). Instead they were called Electric Green, Tangerine, and Blue-You've-Never-Seen (the idea was to have the names rhyme.) 75 of these cars were bought at the show by dealers and driven off to their respective dealerships. This "drive-off" event was lead by the S/C Hurst Rambler. The car sold new in 1969 for $2699. After much research on the internet and in AMC forums I have yet to talk with someone who has actually seen an original Raider. I've heard of duplicates, but never an original. You can look up some of this info at these following sites: Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Mariner#Raider Hemmings: http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2007/12/31/bring-em-back-olive-get-it/ (this site talks about color changes, but there is mention of the Raider along with a poster from 69) Now for the good, bad, and ugly on this particular car. THE GOOD: It is a numbers matching rarity with the all original 343 Typhoon motor and matching 4-barrel carb. The motor runs, though it does smoke some on start up. It even has the original windshield washer bag with pump still attached. All off the trim and emblems are there (including all the trim for the vinyl top) There is zero rust in the floorboards. There is only minor surface rust in the trunk. The door panels seem to be in good shape. The dash is all there including the unique AM radio. THE BAD: Transmission needs rebuilt (it slips beyond driveable), the rear end is locked up (previous owner ran it without oil), there are no rear brakes or drums, the suspension will also need some love, the exhaust has been hacked and cherry bomb mufflers crudely installed. The front seat is gone. Most of the electrical does not work. Mileage is really unknown. the reverse part of the taillights are broken. THE UGLY: The car will need a good body guy and/or replacement fenders (for the years of abuse this car has had the body is in pretty good shape overall, but it is still dented, scratched, and wavy in spots.) The back seat is there but needs to be reupholstered and there is no carpet. The rear deck could also use some love. The scuff plates for the doors are missing. In summary, this is a fantastic rare car with a unique story behind it that needs someone with the expertise, the funds, and most of all the passion to build this car right. I do not have the time nor the ability to restore this car the way it deserves and it had to be rescued from the previous owner who was going to turn it into a trailer.
