Third To Last 4- Speed Cobra Jet Ever Built 5. 15th To Last 1st Generation Mach 1 Built I have no history available on the car over its first twenty years. I am sure that with some effort, more information is available. The car was purchased by William Smith from Rockingham, North Carolina in the summer of 1993. At the time of his purchase, the car showed 105,104 miles on the odometer. The car received a partial restoration immediately thereafter, including its first re-paint of the original Medium Bright Yellow color. (Ford Code # 5080-A). The body was media blasted to bare metal. The fenders, doors, hood and trunk were refinished while removed from the car. The car had minimal rust on the lower left quarter panel and on the rear valence panel. I can see some evidence of that work internally from the trunk area. I also see what appears to be some bondo on both quarter panels. The car was not ravaged by cancer and does not own a lot of plastic. The basecoat/clear-coat re-paint was completed in 1994. The car’s finish was “ average + “ by the time that I had taken ownership. Sheet metal dings were found on the lower right front fender, the lower left front fender and in the center of the trunk lid. A paint blister was found on the right quarter panel immediately above the centerline of the wheel-well. The car was promoted as a full grade better than what arrived at my business. Although still in good shape, it was clearly not as described! During the period between 1994 and 2004 there were numerous improvements made to the car. A detailed chronology is available on these improvements by e-mailing me at tuttley@dejazzd.com. I purchased the car on March 22nd 2004. The car arrived more weathered than described by Mr. Smith. I later discovered that the photos in his ad were taken immediately after the 1994 re-paint and were now over 10 years old. The engine compartment included an aftermarket air cleaner, chromed valve covers, a Boss 351 aluminum intake manifold and no export braces. The carburetor was incorrect for the car. Additionally, it was a square flange Holley feeding a spread-bore intake pattern. The paint under the hood had an area that was peeling and stained. The air conditioning was missing. The undercarriage had been heavily undercoated from the dealership. This actually helped protect the underlying sheet metal. The floor pans were excellent. The pot metal bright-work was pitted and needed replacement. The paintwork/preparation was OK at best. The interior was decent but needed a lot of detailing to bring it up to snuff. Mechanically the car needed a tune-up and had an exhaust leak. The engine idled smoothly and did not smoke. I noticed a significant carbon build-up under the electric choke on the intake manifold. The cover plate was missing on the heat choke cap mechanism on the intake. The car was showing 106,331 miles on the odometer upon its arrival here on August 4th 2004. I purchased this car with the idea of making it a nice project car for my son and me. The car is historically significant giving it added value over its already limited production, one year only, 351 Cobra Jet package. At the time of this purchase, I was concurrently restoring a 1969 R-Code Mach 1. Unfortunately my son’s enthusiasm for cars did not parallel mine, so I parked the car for 5 years without touching it. Late in 2009 I made the decision to get the car freshened-up and to offer it up for sale. My two limiting factors were that I was not going to invest in a re-paint, and I would not detail the undercarriage. Everything else would get the full benefit of my critical eye and fussy nature. I had over $3,000 of mostly new parts from Virginia Classic Mustang, and a few EOM/NOS pieces that I had accumulated over the past 30 years. A comprehensive breakdown of the work that I have performed on this ‘73 Q-Code Mach 1 is available at tuttley@dejazzd.com. Condition Grading System: The following condition rating scale shall be used to clearly state the general condition of each component of the vehicle. The scale is based upon a points rating of 1 through 5. This system is similar in nature to the NADA & CPI grading scales. Here are the condition grades: 1. Excellent: A close to perfect original or an extremely well restored item. Few, if any minor flaws with a high degree of detail. 2. Very Good: Very presentable original showing minimal wear, or well restored. Everything works or operates normally. Needs no mechanical work. Lots of detail but not crisp like #1 above. 3. Good: Presentable with minor signs of wear. Straight and solid with no corrosion or major blemishes. May need minor mechanical or cosmetic work. An average acceptable condition 4. Fair: Operates or functions OK as is, but needs attention. Obvious signs of wear and tear with fading, scratches, dings or visual flaws. Corrosion should be minimal and repairable. 5.
