Also, I can email you more pictures if you need them. Please read this auction extremely closely and ask as many questions as you need to. Up for auction is this 1971 Datsun 240Z. I purchased this car back in the early fall and have decided to sell it after putting about $1500 into it. The previous owner put over $3000 into it, so it is a great start for someone looking to restore it. I bought this Z on ebay and the seller was quite a bit less than honest with me. I don’t want you to be disappointed like I was, so I will tell you everything good and bad that I know about this car to prevent any misunderstandings. This is a perfect car for someone who wants a rat-rod or can do the restoration work yourself. First the good: The car starts right up and runs and idles smoothly. The car shifts very smoothly and is very quick. It has a new clutch, new front brakes and rotors, new rear breaks and drums, new muffler, nearly new tires, an upgraded cam(according to my mechanic), and a new pressure plate, throw out bearing, header, and 2 ½ custom exhaust according to the previous owner. I have the previous owner’s receipts for this work. Additionally, the previous owner claimed that the engine had been rebuilt. My mechanic says the above work was performed, minus the engine rebuild. When I got the car, the wiring was terrible. I spent $1200 having the entire car rewired. I also had new seat belts installed. I just re-charged the battery and it took a full 10. All lights and signals are now operable. There is some rust on the frame (see photos) buy my mechanic says that it isn’t severe. Lastly, there is no heater coil. I really love this car and have enjoyed driving it, it’s just a matter of running out of money to continue its restoration. Now the bad: This car has an exhaust leak, probably in the manifold. My mechanic was getting ready to tackle it when I told him to stop. Because of this leak, the car won’t pass inspection as is. You must drive it with the windows down. The headlights work, but one high beam doesn’t. The wipers work very weakly. The horn and turn signals won’t work until the steering column is worked on. The choke cable assembly is disconnected, but the car starts right up, even on cold days. The gauges are unreliable because the printed circuit behind them needs to be replaced. When I put gas in the car, there was a slow leak somewhere high up in the tank/tube that stopped after a couple of hours and hasn’t leaked since. The body needs a lot of work. There is a lot of bondo under the paint and quite a few dings, scratches, etc. The roof has been patched a couple of times and has a scratch/crack (see photo)The interior needs a complete restoration. There is no headliner, the seats are shot, the dash is somewhat cracked (although I’ve seen much worse). There are no weather strips on the doors or hatch. The odometer mileage is at 18,925, but that’s probably not reliable. As I said above, I really like this car but wasn’t expecting it to be in this shape when I bought it. Feel free to call or email with questions and I’ll answer them the best that I can (816) 868-1208. I am not a mechanic, however, so I can only tell you what my mechanic has told me. I am starting this auction way below what I paid for it and letting bidders decide what it is worth. Please keep that in mind and understand that I am selling this Z “as is.” You are responsible for picking up the car or having it shipped. I will be out of town from June 26th to July 1st, and July 4th to July 10th, so make arrangements accordingly. A deposit of $500 is due within 24 hours of auction’s end and the balance must be paid within 7 days from auction’s close.
