Vehicle Detail
Up for bids today, with a very fair reserve, is a totally original 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special in amazing condition. This car has lived most of its life, garage kept in Pasadena California where it was loved and preserved by the original owner since she and her husband bought it brand new, locally, from Symes Cadillac agency in Pasadena. He was the Dean of a local university and was very particular about the upkeep and maintenance of this car which was always performed at Symes Cadillac. When her husband eventually passed away, the car sat unused for many years with a total of only 71.000 original miles, until it was discovered by myself several years ago and added to my private collection. I actually drove this car back to Fort Lauderdale Florida, a truly wonderful and trouble free 2700 mile experience! As were most Fleetwood Sixty Specials, this car is heavily optioned and has all of the extra features as indicated below. 365 Cubic Inch, 310 Horsepower 4 Barrel Engine Hydramatic Transmission (4 speed automatic) Power Steering and Power Brakes Dual Exhaust – All Brand New! Just installed 2 weeks ago with mufflers and resonators Factory Air Conditioning (Blows cold but only holds charge for 2 months) Factory E-Z-Eye Tinted Glass (excellent condition except for slight eyebrow scratches on windshield) Power Windows – and Power Vent Windows Drivers Remote Mirror Passenger Side Mirror Power Front Seat – 6 way adjustable AM Radio – Signal Seeking with Rear Seat Speaker Clock – (works but not all the time ) Autronic Eye – Headlamp Dimmer Factory Fog Lights Power Trunk Opener Cadillac “V” Floor Mats (set of 4) Wide Whitewall Radial Tires (235-75-15) Gold Front Grille, Sixty Special Emblems and Cowl Vent Does NOT have troublesome Air Ride, Triple Carbs or Power Door Locks BODY – CHROME - GLASS: When I purchased this car from the original owner, it was totally original, never repainted or had any paint work and there was no rust or major damage. It did, however have some dings and some small dents and scratches. There were a few small pieces of stainless trim that had dings and scrapes which were replaced. After several years of ownership, I decided to have the car repainted in the exact Factory original shade of white which matches the door jams that were left original and in nice condition. The moldings and trim were removed as needed but the car was not totally taken apart. The paint work is about 5 years old and still looks very shiny and in nice condition. By no means is it a Pebble Beach type of paint job but it is still a very clean job with no evidence of overspray or poor masking. There is one very small spot on the forward portion of driver side rear door, just above the stainless lower door molding which a small spot of rust seem to be beginning. It’s such a small spot that my camera couldn’t photograph it. Most of the exterior chrome is original however the bumpers were rechromed at the same time the car was painted. The chrome is in very nice condition with no dents or rust. There are however, 2 small spots on the front bumper, next to the dagmars, where the chrome did not hold up. These areas are very insignificant and do not stand out. The stainless trim is in very nice original condition. There are signs of very slight use but overall looks very nice and shiny. I had the Cadillac Crest and “V” hood emblem re-gold plated along with the “Sixty Special” quarter panel emblems replated at the same time when the car was painted but now, they are looking a little tired and should be replated again. They don’t look bad, they just look tired as some of the plating has come off. The plastic insert on the hood crest needs to be replaced as well. This item is easily obtainable from McVey’s Cadillac Parts along with any other item you may need. The E-Z Eye glass is all factory tinted and in good condition. The front windshield is in good condition without any stars or cracks but does have a few eyebrow scratches from when the wiper blades were once worn out. These eyebrows can be polished out by a glass company who deals with windshield restoration. In my opinion, this glass is too good to be replaced. INTERIOR: When I purchased this car, it still had the factory original interior – beautiful but worn in several areas. At a great expense, I had the seats and door panels reupholstered with correct black and silver pattern cloth inserts. I was able to locate the correct black and silver cloth with the exact factory pattern from SMS Auto Fabrics. I had the seats and door panels recovered exactly as per factory installation and replaced the silver leather with correct grain silver vinyl. The silver headliner and visors are still factory original and are in very nice condition. The rear package tray is original and in very nice condition. The dash pad is also original, does not show any signs of discoloration or cracking but does show some sign of wear however is still in very presentable condition. The interior chrome is still in very nice condition and all pieces are intact. There are 2 small, barely noticeable cracks on the steering wheel but overall, it is in excellent condition. The chrome horn ring is in perfect condition and the horn still works. The carpeting has been replaced with correct cut pile in black as per factory installation. There are also 4 original factory rubber floor mats with the Cadillac “V” crest. They have been re-dyed and look very nice. They are not brand new reproductions but still look very nice. The trunk has been nicely recovered and the car still has the ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE which has only been slightly used! MECHANICAL: This Cadillac runs and drives beautifully! Despite its heavy weight, it floats, rides effortlessly and takes bumps unlike a modern car of today could. It is a true driving experience and I can attest to the fact because I drove this car from Pasadena California to Fort Lauderdale Florida without any problems. It didn’t even burn or leak a single quart of oil! The engine is original and has never been rebuilt. It has been sitting for quite some time and probably could use a good tune up. I’ve used Pertronix Electronic Ignition modules in other old cars and it makes a huge difference with smoothness. I highly recommend adding one to this car. It did have a valve job performed a few years ago, a new water pump installed and had the Tread-L-Vac Power Brake system rebuilt. I just had a brand new exhaust system installed including new mufflers and resonators. The tail pipe tips are exactly curved as per factory installation. Before I purchased this car, the transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner which in my opinion needs have the linkage adjusted because it shifts a little late unless I’m really easy on the gas. The engine compartment is in very nice, original unrestored condition. There are a few minor problems with some of the interior power accessories. The power seat always worked well but it stopped working when I had the seats recovered. I have a feeling that the power seat is just not connected but all of the mechanicals associated with this are still in place. The A/C blows and stays cold for about 2 months when at that time, the Freon leaks out and needs another charge. The radio, power antenna, power trunk release and interior lights do not work and I think they may all be on the same fuse, which I have never checked out. These items did work when I purchased the car. The dome reading lights still work properly and all interior lenses are in very nice condition. The power windows all go down fine but the passenger rear window needs a little help to raise it up. The Power Vent windows have good motors but only the passenger vent window works as it should. The motor on the driver side works but doesn’t open. I believe it needs a new gear which is easily obtainable. All exterior lights work properly including the Factory Fog Lights and Back Up Lamps. OVERVIEW: To own a Fleetwood Sixty Special in such amazingly original condition has now become very difficult than ever. Cars such as this one are next to impossible to find. This car was lovingly restored as needed and the new owner may decide to fix the small items mentioned. This car represents a special time in US motoring history that can never be replaced. Big fins, tons of chrome and individual Harvey Earl styling has all become a thing of the past. When sitting behind the wheel and driving the Sixty Special, all of these memories come alive again and the driver is left with a special feeling of how great this country really is and how lucky we are to have once built automobiles such as the Fleetwood Sixty Special!
