Vehicle Detail

I have up for auction my 1970 Pontiac Lemans Sport. I bought this car about a year and a half ago as a partially finished car. The previous owner had performed an amateur restoration on the car and I got it from him when he ran out of time and money to finish the car. Basically I am in the same situation now. The car needs some finishing and I just don't have the time and extra funds available to finish the car the way it should be. I'll do my best to describe the car exactly as it is. OK the car is a 1970 Pontiac Lemans Sport. It is an original 4 speed car and I have a partial copy of the build sheet to prove that this car came from the factory originally equipped with an M-20 4 speed trans. The build sheet also states that this car was originally a 350 2bbl car with a 4 speed and a 10 bolt 3:23 non-posi rear. The build sheet is partial, it appears to have come from under a seat and isn't complete but it does have the VIN of the car and I'd say 75-85% of the options listed. Currently the car has a 1968 400 that the numbers show came out of a big car such as a Bonneville or Catalina, Pontiac guys have told me that it was probably a 400 250HP 2 bbl engine. The previous owner claimed to have rebuilt the engine several years back with a mostly stock rebuild except for an 068 cam. Honestly I have no way of verifying that fact. All I can tell you is that the engine runs great and has no ticking, knocking, and doesn't blow any smoke. It's rebuilt to look like a stock 400 with factory chrome valve covers. When I got the car the previous owner was having trouble getting it to run right. He had a crappy Holley vaccuum secondary 4 bbl and the points were very worn. I converted the car to HEI ignition and installed a brand new rebuilt Rochester quadrajet carb. I know Holley is supposed to be a great carb but I've always found the Q-jet, when tuned properly, to be an excellent running carb especially on mostly stock GM cars. Right now the car runs REAL strong. It pulls hard in all 4 gears. When I converted the car to HEI, I installed brand new AC Delco platinum plugs, and a set of Accel 8MM HEI plug wires. I also pulled the 12 volts to feed the HEI off of the fuse block and ran it through a toggle switch so the car has a "kill switch" to keep from being stolen. The trans appears to be the original Muncie M-20. It shifts through the original "round stick" Hurst shifter. The shifter and trans both shift very smoothly. The stick still feels very good and isn't all sloppy like some OEM shifters get after too much use. Ther previous owner claimed to have installed a new clutch when the engine was replaced. Again, I have no way to verify that fact, I can only tell you that the clutch feels fine and has no slipping at all. The rear is the original 10 bolt BOP style rear with 3:23 gears. It is not a posi. The entire drivetrain is strong and solid. OK as far as the body, the previous owner performed his own amateur restoration on the body. The car is a great 5-10 footer. The paint shines very nicely and honestly looks good. But, there are signs of previous body work. You have to get up close to see them but they are there. Also there are SMALL bubbles in certain areas of the car. When I say small I do mean small. There are no bubbling spots on the car larger than a dime. PLEASE understand that the body looks decent and appears straight but it was an amateur restoration. One partial quarter panel was replaced, there are patch panels in the trunk, and the bottoms of both fenders were either replaced or patched. Also the driver's side front floor pan was replaced. The interior was also subjected to a partial restoration. When the floor pan was replaced the previous owner installed a brand new carpet. He also installed an aftermarket set of bucket seats that were dyed red to match the interior. So please take a good look at the seats they are not original GM bucket seats for an A body car. But, they are dyed to match an unless you are really looking hard you wouldn't catch the seats as non originals. I do have the original factory GM A body bucket seats on a shelf in my garage as well as an original factory GM Pontiac 4 speed floor shift console. The console is the factory Pontiac red just like the rest of the interior. The seats will need re-upholstering and the console only needs a lid. The factory bucket seats and the console will accompany the car if the reserve is met. Look here in ebay and you'll see that factory GM buckets sell for anywhere from $350.00 up to $750.00 depending on the condition. You could re-upholster the factory seats while driving the car on the aftermarket seats. Once the factory seats are ready to be re-installed, you can sell the aftermarket seats to someone here on ebay. The dash pad is in good shape. It's a dash pad cover. It installs right on top of the factory dash and looks great. The car will need a headliner and a rear package tray. The door panels are in great shape and look relatively new. The car needs a few things to be done right. Here are the 2 biggest issues. The frame has a small hole right under the drivers side floor pan. It's about the size of a quarter, maybe a little larger. A patch panel can be welded on the hole, you just need a good strong welder. Also the car needs new ball joints. I've been spending all winter trying to get the car ready for the summer. I took it to an alignment shop to have it aligned and they said that it needs new ball joints before being aligned. It runs straight but when you take your hands off the wheel it pulls slightly to the right. Right now I don't have the time or money to have the ball joints replaced. The ball joints aren't expensive but it's kind of a labor intensive job. If you fix the ball joints and patch the frame the rest of the little issues can be done while you drive and enjoy the car. The car does have a lot of nice extras. It has power steering, manual DISC brakes. The car was converted from manual front drum to manual front disc brakes. The calipers and pads are factory but it has drilled and slotted front rotors. It has a brand new Pypes manifold back 2-1/2" dual exhaust system. The entire exhaust system has less than 1000 miles on it. It also has 15" Pontiac Rally rims with brand new Firestone tires. The tires also have about 1000 miles on them. The HEI and carburetor were installed brand new this winter and probably have less than 100 miles on them. The gas tank is new and unfortunately for some reason the gas gauge just stopped working. It's probably a bad ground but I haven't had the time to find it. I also installed a brand new set of gauges along with a new Sun Super tach. The tach and gauges were all installed this previous winter. All in all it's a very nice car. It looks great and is a blast to cruise down the road. The factory 4 speed is a great option. I understand that the car is a partially finished car and needs some finishing work therefore I am setting a fair reserve. I'm not looking to get rich and I, not one of those idiots who watch too much Barrett Jackson. I'm offering a nice 4 speed V8 bucket seat dics brake musclecar at a fair price. Please feel free to email any questions. I also have additional pictures or I will take pictures of any area you need to see. Thanks and good luck. On Jun-05-10 at 13:17:28 PDT, seller added the following information: As stated above the car comes with 2 factory GM bucket seats needing re-covering, a factory Pontiac 4 speed console in red. I'm also including in the sale of the car: the partial build sheet, a detailed Pontiac shop manual for the 1970 Lemans/GTO, a nice heavy duty car cover, and any small parts I have laying around. It looks like the next bid will hit reserve. Good luck bidding!
