The Ford Thunderbird emerged in 1955 as a sporty two-seater and was intended as a more luxurious competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette. Ford executives felt that it would sell better with a back seat and by 1958 the car was a true four seat vehicle. Thunderbird’s early years seemed to be on a three year cycle of redesign with 1955-57 featuring the original two seat convertibles, 1958-60 featuring the larger “Square birds”, 1961-63 the “Bullet birds”, and 1964-66 the “Flight birds.” 1966 was the last year of the “Flight birds” and the last before Thunderbird grew to a full size line of two and four door sedans. 1966 was also the last year of the unique “T-Bird” features like the “Swing-Away” steering wheel, overhead control console, stereo tape system, “Silent-Flow” ventilation system and a new, optional, 345 hp. 428 cu. in. engine. 1966 Thunderbirds were available in four body styles: The base model was a hardtop with no vinyl roof cover, the Town Hardtop had no vinyl and no quarter windows, the Town Landau with no quarter windows, vinyl roof covering and “S”-shaped landau irons on the rear C pillars, and a convertible. The most obvious external change for the 1966 model year was a full width taillight that extended fully across the rear of the car. This taillight continued the use of sequential turn signals that made for an entertaining light show for anyone behind the car. Technical Information: Engine Type: OHV, V8 Displacement: 390 Cubic Inches Horsepower: 315 @ 4600 Transmission Type: Cruise-O-Matic 3 Speed Wheelbase: 113 Inches Weight: 4,367 Pounds Production Information: Original List Price: $4,551 You are bidding on the 1966 Ford Thunderbird Town Landau below. This is nice example of a rust free California T-Bird. While it is not a frame off restoration, it has curb appeal and looks good from a few feet away, "20 footer." The California body is very straight and free of rot or major dents. The red paint is an older repaint and will need some attention. Please view the numerous photos we have provided to get a better idea of the paint's condition. The car features its original 390, big block Ford V8. The engine fires right up and does not smoke or miss. It has plenty of power when accelerating and it shifts through the gears as it should. The car handles and stops well although it pulls to the right and needs an alignment. The interior of the car is in fairly good condition. The driver seat has a few splits but is mostly intact. The cockpit features bucket seats (power on the driver's side), center console, slide-away steering column, air condition, power windows, power steering, power brakes, and more. The dash retains its original FM radio that is in working condition. The car's glass is in good condition and is free of cracks or chips. The car is equipped with power windows. The driver's side window mechanism works but the switch needs to be replaced. The car's electrical system is currently in working order. The charging system is working as it should. The windshield wipers, headlights, taillights, sequential turn signals, map lights, and dash lights are all working. The chrome and stainless throughout the car is in fairly good condition. The bumpers are straight and retain much of their shine. The car has rare original rear wheel well trim in place of the more often seen fender skirts. Original steel wheels are at all four corners and feature full dish hub caps. They are wrapped in period correct skinny white wall tires. The tires are in fair condition. The car still has is original matching California State Prison made black and yellow license plates. Overall, this car looks good for a driver, runs well, and has a lot of money in new stuff already done. This car could make a great driver or finish it off with a paint job and chrome. Either way somebody has already bought and paid for the hard stuff. Their loss could be your gain. Feel free to email any questions and check out the numerous pics we have up for your viewing pleasure. A clear California title is on hand and the car is free of liens or back fees. The odometer reads 32,362 but the actual mileage is believed to be 132,362. PAYMENT TERMS and Conditions: A non-refundable deposit of $500.00 is due within 48 hours of auctions end.
