Vehicle Detail
Selling my restored 1956 Oval Window VW to make room for another vintage car, of which I have a stronger attachment (1963 Volvo PV544 B18 Sport). There is only so much room in my garage. As you can see from the pictures my Bug is beautiful in all respects. It was owned and rebuilt by a gentleman who owned an independent VW/Porsche shop here in Sacramento. It drives straight and true with a very strong engine and transmission. I would drive it across the the United States. In fact, I'd drive it anywhere. If you need more pictures, I have many more I can email to you. I am at gregsmithco@gmail.com. Please note the horn doesn't work. If you need it stored inside for a month or so, I'd be happy to do that for you. I will also work with your shipper. That was told to me when I bought it from another person I know and trust, but I do not know that statement is a fact, nor do I have any records to prove the statement.. On Dec-07-18 at 07:27:07 PST, seller added the following information: I was in a hurry when I made the initial post and should have include the fogs lights are not connected and the radio does not work. All of the glass is original, with the exception of the windshield. All of the glass has been reinstalled with new rubber. Sorry for the late notice. Again, if you need more specific photos please ask and I will send them to you. I am at gregsmithco@gmail.com. The car is in my garage located in Sacramento, California. I have the clear title in hand. Thank you. I fly to Portland on the 20th to fetch the Volvo and then I'll have a road trip on Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, as I drive it home here to Sacramento. Here is a story about my history with my first Volvo . I became enlightened in 1967 when I bought my first of thirteen Volvos. It was a 1963, PV544, B-18S with about 60,000 miles on it. At 19 years old, I found it handled much different than the ‘56 Chevy I had in high school. I drove my Volvo with exuberance, like it was meant to be driven. You might say I rode it hard. I was in the Air Force stationed at Keelsler AFB in Boloxi, MS. While there I bought an instructional book about how to road race which was authored by an English race car driver, whose name escapes me, and from that learned how to DRIVE on the sandy-dirt back roads in my little Volvo. A fun modification I made to the PV was removing the rear resonator. I replaced it with a megaphone I custom made at the base metal shop. Can you imagine how much fun I had in that black beauty drifting on the serpentine, sandy-dirt, back roads of Mississippi, with the exhaust screaming at redline? After a year of electronics’ tech school, I was transferred to a RADAR site on top of Mt. Hebo, OR. While at my new duty station in Oregon, I rented a house in Pacific City with a couple of other Sergeants. I would frequently rip around on the beach in Pacific City, but before I hit the sand would I remove the 5.60 X 15s from the rear and replace them with F78s on 14 inch wheels. With very low air pressure in the back, I would drive with exuberance on the beach, mostly on the wet sand and have an absolute blast. Being young and inexperienced, I put no thought into the damage that was being caused by my playful drives. One fun filled afternoon, I was flying low across the beach where the wet sand becomes firm as the water from the waves ebb in and out, which I had done many times before. Just imagine being young and carefree in a 544 with the B-18 screaming in second gear at the top of its lungs, weaving in-and-out in unison and parallel with the waves for miles. I heard it before I felt it. I heard the engine start to bog down as I started to slow. I had hit some soft sand. It had the appearance of being firm, but it was full of air and that caused a rapid sinking of the F78s, along with the skinny 5.60s up front. Bogging down, I was losing power and slowing quickly. I knew the tide was coming in and I had no time to get stuck. Rapidly losing my momentum, which is everything on sand, I turned away from the ocean and did what I had to do and that was down shift into first in order to gain power. I had no choice. Just what I thought would happen did. The wide, low pressure rear tires spun as they plowed deeper into Mother Earth, and there we were stopped dead in our tracks. In my two years of ownership, I couldn’t hurt that bullet proof 544 with my very aggressive driving, but by the time the tow truck arrived, I had lost my trusty Volvo to the Pacific Ocean. The Ocean killed her. So, you can see from my story I am going to relive part of my youth. At 70 years old my juices are flowing and I am excited as I prepare for my road trip in my "new" PV544! Life is short, have fun! On Dec-11-18 at 07:09:39 PST, seller added the following information:
