Vehicle Detail

Great riding, early example with matching numbers! 1970 BMW R75/5 Engine and Frame Number: 2970299 The /5 was the first new BMW motorcycle design for nearly two decades, and the basic design would last for more than 25 years. Hans-Gunther von der Marwitz left Porsche in the late 1960s to design the new BMW motorcycles under the wing of technical director Helmut Werner Bonsch. Bonsch had managed to persuade BMW not to abandon motorcycle production altogether in the late 1960s in the midst of the Japanese "invasion" after the slow demise of the British establishment. In von der Marwitz' mind's eye was a much more modern machine than the previous BMW /2 series in the image of the "featherbed" Manx Norton. BMW opened a new motorcycle factory in Spandau, a suburb of Berlin, for the necessary renaissance. Fortunately, success was instant, with 1970 /5 production virtually tripling that of 1969 at 12,287 machines. BMW, from its completely re-designed, stronger, smoother and vastly more modern motor, quoted 50 horsepower at 6,200 rpm for the 4-speed, R75/5, some 10 more than the 600 cc R60/5, and 18 more than the 500 cc R50/5. With a dry weight of 423 lb, the now 12-volt, 745 cc electric start machine was capable of 110 mph. The R75/5 on offer here has been part of a discerning BMW collection for several years. An early example – the 298th machine produced in November of 1969 – the bike is offered in great riding condition The owner bought this matching-numbers machine, essentially as you see it today, but had to rebuild the top end recently, as it was showing signs of age and wear. Now, the engine feels remarkably strong, with great, responsive and instant power. At that time, he added an electronic ignition and a fresh battery. The wheels were also rebuilt with stainless spokes and a new seat cover was fitted. The bike features a Luftmeister sidestand and crash bars, as well as a ride off center stand. Dial-A-Ride rear shocks assist with handling. A rarity today is to find the original tire pump and a full set of tools in the original toolroll. The bike also comes with an original owner’s manual in excellent condition. The bike starts easily, idles well, and shifts perfectly with an excellent clutch. Brakes work well and suspension is taut and free of squeaks. It is a pleasure to ride with modern amenities, yet a classic look and feel. Cosmetically, the bike presents very well. In mostly original paint, the bike shows well with minor blemishes conducive with the age and mileage of a well-maintained and cared for machine. The front fender is a plastic replacement item. This is a great riding bike, one I am confident in, mechanically, and would be a perfect rider for someone looking for classic looks without all the associated challenges.
