This one of less than 5 ever produced in Hellrot over parchment. 1 of 1 originally automatic hellrot of parchment according to bmws production numbers. Overall M Sport production was around 207 total vehicles, BMW has never released the actually e34 M Sport Production for the United States. Being that at least 30 have been parted out or destroyed its safe to say that less than 180 exists today. History: The E34 540iM Sport is a special 5 Series model produced in 1995 by BMW Individual. In essence, this model mates the standard four-liter M60 V8 engine and Getrag six-speed manual gearbox of the 540i with the M-designed chassis and cosmetic enhancements of the final European-spec E34 M5. Why was the M Sport created? BMW NA came up with the idea of the 540i M Sport as a way to offer customers a true successor to the E34 M5, which had been discontinued during 1993 (though it continued to be produced for the European market until July of 1995). The basis for the M Sport was the 540i six-speed, a model that was already certified for sale in the U.S. and produced similar power figures to the M5. By adding all the chassis and cosmetic enhancements from the 1995 European-spec M5 but without altering the drivetrain, BMW could offer a model with a comparable appearance and performance to the M5, but without the prohibitive cost of additional emissions and safety certification. How was the M Sport produced? To create the M Sport, BMW M pulled semi-completed examples of the North American-spec 540i six-speed from the Dingolfing assembly line. These cars were then taken to the BMW M works in Garching where they were fitted with the M chassis components and cosmetics. Drivetrain What kind of engine powers the M Sport? The M Sport is powered by the standard 3982cc M60 V8 used in all E34 540i, E32 740i/740iL and early E31 840Ci models. It has an aluminum block and head with four valves per cylinder. Power is rated at 282 hp (SAE) at 5,800 rpm and 295 lb/ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. What kind of gearbox does the M Sport have? The M Sport utilizes a Getrag Type D six-speed manual gearbox with the following ratios: 4.23 (1), 2.51 (2), 1.67 (3), 1.23 (4), 1.00 (5), .83 (6). This is mated to a 2.93:1 axle ratio, except on those examples equipped with the optional ASC+T tracrtion control system, which have an open differential. Chassis How is the M Sport chassis different from that of a normal 540i? The suspension of the M Sport is identical to the standard "Nurburgring" chassis of the European-spec E34 M5. It therefore incorporates the following modifications over the normal 540i setup: -Adaptive M Suspension, an M-tuned version of Electronic Damping Control (EDC) that electronically chooses the optimum shock rates based on sensors that gather road speed, steering input, acceleration/deceleration loads and lateral body movements -20mm reduction in ride height -25 percent firmer spring rates -Self-leveling rear shocks -Thicker antiroll bars front and rear -Adjustable rear toe-in The recirculating ball steering utilizes the E34 M5's quicker ratio (15.6:1) and available ZF Servotronic (vehicle-speed sensitive) power assist. What size brakes does the M Sport have? TheM Sport 's braking system is the same as that of all US E34 M5s built as of May 1993, its four-wheel vented discs with 315 calipers in the front. What are the factory wheel and tire sizes for an M540i? Like all early E34 M5 built, the M Sport is shod with 245/45ZR17 tires on M Turbines sized 8x17-inch (front) and 8x17-inch (rear). Cosmetics How is the exterior of the M Sport different from that of a standard E34 540i? The M Sport's appearance is distinguished from that of the normal 540i by the following items: -Body-color M-Technic front spoiler and rear diffuser -M aerodynamic rear-view mirrors -Shadowline (dechromed) exterior trim -17-inch M Turbine alloy wheels -Chrome exhaust tips -"M Sport" decklid badging What items were optional on the M Sport? Two factory options were offered on the M Sport: ASC+T traction control and Bison leather upholstery (in either Black or Light Silvergrey). In addition, a 6-disc CD changer and cellular phone were dealer-installed options Driver door brake is broken, I have the brake and koala motorsport upgrade to go with the car. The car: After all that the M Sport is much the same as a E34 M5 but without the service cost of the S38 and is a much rarer vehicle. My E34 M Sport has lived quite the life. For the most part, as far as I know, its lived mostly in southern California before being transplanted here to Aspen CO. Exterior: Originally Painted in BMW Hellrot the exterior has received a lot of work. Vin panels match minus both fenders and front bumper. They are BMW dot replacements. I do have the original fenders with side markers but they are pretty beat up with dents. Also the painter who painted the fenders did a interesting job blending the fenders as can be seen in the pictures. The entire car has probably been repainted in its life. Lots of little door dings and rock chips exists throughout. Also, the shadowline is chipping in places. Magnet test show no signs of bondo. Overall though this is one of the very few M Sports i've seen that show no signs or rust anywhere. Interior: Lots of care has been placed, Both seats were badly twisted and all has been restored to normal seat function. All the movements work in the seats, all the electronics work, a/c, power door locks-the back seat locks sometime don't work automatically, windows-drivers regulator just replaced, radio, sunroof, no instrument pixels missing, obc and all the lights. The driver seat and the door panels are in excellent shape for a e34 minus the left upper driver seat bolster which is torn. The heated seats work great on these cold mornings. The M Steering wheel out of a 850csi also shows some wear. Also the driver seat memory switch has a missing button. The wood trim is in overall amazing condition. Only two panels have cracks, the center wood console and the passenger door trim. The trunk features a complete original tool kit a spare changing tools. Rebuilt driver door hinge All glass, including the windshield is original to the car. Radio is a 2015 build Kenwood deck. Comes with two keys. Drivetrain: This is not your mom's typical M Sport. This has been built to achieve what the M60 was supposed to deliver. The crappy 2.93 open diff has been replaced with a 750il 3.15 lsd. The complete exhaust was ripped out and replaced with a hand built no 02 no cats no resonator exhaust-its not as loud as you might think. Every day, including a local national automotive journalist, have stated its the nicest sounding exhaust anyone has heard in a e34 540i. The motor is not stock. Ecu does have a aftermarkt tune The intake manifold has been upgraded to a 1993 740i, I think its the same as the Dinan. The fuel injection is also aftermarket. The motor pulls amazingly strong, especially at sea level. The gear shifts come much faster than a normal 540i and at a rolling start will keep up with a e39 M5 here at altitude, video can be requested. Suspension: The factory edc was rebuilt in 2011. The shocks are stiff and show no signs of leaking. All the stock parts are in tact. Tires and wheels are M Par 18s from a e38. I also have euro throwing stars that can be added to the car with brand new yoko tires The M turbine spare is included in the trunk. The spare tire is at 30 percent tire life Service Highlights: When I picked this up it needed just about everything, -New Clutch, slave and master -Has good tranny mounts and guibo -Front brakes -Rear ebrake cables -Spark plugs -Valve Cover gaskets -Someone was in the oil pan recently and rtv the crap out of the gasket -New goodyear tires -New Maf -New intake gaskets and pvc, Id do this agian and replace the osv o rings and use better intake gaskets. -Brake fluid flush -Engine oil change with rotella 10-40 and mann oil filter -Air filter is k and n if you like it -Driver window regulator -New trunk lock -Transmission oil with Royal Purple. -Passenger motor mount -The cooling system, a weak point, has been working well. My guess is the water pump and radiator were replaced in 2009 based on the date stamps on the parts. Also the aux fan works! Rare options: 850csi Auto Dim mirror Ski Bag E39 M5 Lighted Shifter 3.15 lsd Warning triangle Rear Headrest E32 Armrest Sport Seat Armrest Heated Seats Euro trim Euro Smilley headlights-when turned on they will send a check code. Ive changed bulbs, wiring and dont know why. Overall this is well built fast 540i M sport. Its not perfect but if you are looking for something different than pretty much any other 540i this is your car. I drove it from the west coast into the Rockies and never encountered one issue. The rarity of the m sport and the extremely low production of hellrot; one might not come for sale again for quite some time. Car is being sold as is where is. I would have no problem also driving this car across the country but keep in mind we have been starting to get some snow. Also I have a extra 1995 540/6 stock condition with matching vins than can be purchased for extra parts. 173k and runs great.
