The e46 BMW 330i is blast to drive in its own right. The M54 3.0 liter inline 6 motor with a 10:2:1 compression ratio is a zippy motor with power and torque and tops Ward's list of 10 best engines for the early 2000s. The M54 3.0 was the foundation for the S54 3.2 liter used in the e46 M3s. Combine the 3.0 inline 6 with a 5 speed Getrag transmission and exceptional handling and balance every BMW provides, this is a car that will put a smile on anyone who gets behind the wheel. The core of a Dinan tuned BMW is to amplify the cars attributes that have already been engineered into the car by BMW. BMW touts itself the "Ultimate Driving Machine" this has been achieved by its success in sports car racing the technology from the race cars get engineered into every BMW car combining optimal handling with 50-50 weight distribution, lightweight powerful motors, and attractive and timeless designs. The core and essence of BMW above all other models is the rear wheel drive, inline 4 or 6 cylinder, compact sedan known worldwide as the 3 series. This combination is really what put BMW on the map on the racing circuit and with the public and has cemented their brand worldwide as a car company. Around the same time BMW was beginning to really take off as a car brand thanks to in a large part of the early 320i's and their appeal to people in California the largest market for BMWs since the begining. The San Francisco bay area was also becoming the powerful Silicon Valley a headquarters for the worlds top technology companies. An engineer by the name of Steve Dinan was combining his love for cars and tuning cars with technology and started the company DINAN in Morgan Hill, CA in the late 70s which has grown into a leader among aftermarket tuning companies as well as on the race track, and has become a name synonymous with BMW performance similar to what Shelby did with the Mustang and Calloway with Corvettes etc. In order to receive the DINAN emblem and namesake a certain amount of upgrades need to be preformed by DINAN to satisfy their requirements to carry the DINAN name. This BMW 330i went to DINAN in Morgan Hill, CA and was equipped with the DINAN S1 package. This included a complete remapping of the cars software in the ECU to maximize the engines power band. The cars hardware was upgraded to a DINAN high flow throttle body system and DINAN cold air intake to increase air flow and fuel delivery. A complete DINAN exhaust system was installed for better exit flow as well as giving it a more sportier sound. These upgrades made the 3.0 6 cylinder breath better gaining power and increasing the power band at the lower and higher rpms. The other important aspect to performance is making the car handle better. There really isn't many cars that are a better foundation to start with than a BMW 3 series when it comes to handling. The improvements DINAN performed were designed to tighten the suspension up. This included thicker sway bar, stiffer DINAN springs, DINAN strout tower brace, Bilstein shocks, DINAN rear trailing arm monoball kit, Staggerd 18 inch 3 Piece aluminum wheels. A DINAN clutch and short shifter were installed to increase the shifting response. Combine all of these performance improvements with the comfortable DINAN floor mats you have reached a level to satisfy DINAN certification to have the DINAN emblem included as well as a DINAN serial number identifying this BMW 330i as a DINAN 3. This DINAN 3 is an absolute blast to drive. It is an extremely balanced car that was built for and really shines in environments like the curvy canyon roads of the California hills. There are many cars that are more powerful than this BMW. However this car is balanced enough to maximize its power and will certainly get you from point A to point B faster than many cars that have much more horsepower. It can be compared as a down tuned M3 or a 330i on steroids although suspension wise it may be superior to an M3. This car is a perfect combination of what makes BMW so great and improving on that foundation to get a fantastic machine. Some cosmetic additions not performed by DINAN is an AC Shnitzer M3 body kit, An authentic carbon fiber hood, and a authentic carbon fiber "M3 CSL" style trunk. Larger AC Shnitzer racing pedals and AC Shnitzer gear shift knob were installed as well. This car really is a fun car to drive however it does have some of the typical nuances of a preowned BMW, the rear passenger window doesn't work, there is a power steering fluid leak as well as an small oil leak. The interior dome light doesn't work, It needs a headlight bulb, the headliner is not perfect as well as the sunroof headliner. The brake pads should be replaced at some point. There is a small tear in the passenger door by the handle. The check engine light is on due to a small tear in the rubber by the cold air intake triggering an air flow sensor this really doesn't affect the car performance wise but does trigger the sensor which triggers the light. The wheels have curbrash and a dent on one of the wheels. The car runs strong and never overheats. It shifts smooth and the brakes work great. This was a loaded up 330i equipped from the factory with the sports package which included the M sport wheel, sport gauges, mono chromatic color scheme. Also this car was equipped with the upgraded Harmon Kardon sound system which works absolutely great.The ecterior is in decent shape for its age there are small dings and small scratches on the bumpers. There is NO rust and the body is straight and never been in an accident. The carbon fiber could use a coat of clear or a buff and it will be as shiny as the paint. The e46 BMW is considered the last of a generation when it comes to an authentic purist BMW 3 series. It had been a consistent evolution from the early foundations of the BMW 2002 of the 70s to the BMW 320i and e30 3 series of the 80s into the e36s of the 90s. These BMWs are the very essence of BMW as a company and paved the way from an almost bankrupt small not very popular European car maker into a force to be reckon with in sports car racing and one of the best selling cars from the 80s till present day propelling BMW into a world renowned and respected car maker setting the bar for other car makers feverishly try to follow. The e46 is a timeless body style that marks the last of a generation and changeover into a new generation of highly computerized bulkier BMW 3 series. If you look at the trends they are set to be a desirable car in the future. This particular e46 car is one of those unique examples of a great car that has been made even greater. Similar to what Shelby did with the Mustang or SLP did with Camaros and Firebirds. DINAN has been able to build a brand that is synonymous with BMW to form a exceptional synergy of automobile performance.
