A journalist review of the 2002 Porsche Boxster S: Porsche's Boxster S is an absolutely bewitching piece of road-going entertainment. Like some agile, delicately muscled gymnast confidently treading a balance beam, the Boxster S traces narrow two-lanes with quick-twitch muscle, precision, and rock-solid balance. But what’s an S? The S adds a central nose air intake feeding an extra radiator, red-painted brake calipers, bigger rotors, wheels and tires, a larger engine, a sixth gear, a convertible-top headliner, an alarm system, one more exhaust tip and one less steering-wheel spoke. All add immensely to the “basic” Boxster’s already high fun factor. It feels considerably more solid and long-legged than most of its two-seater competitors. This Olympic-class sports car has a black belt in horsepower and sporty powertrain refinement. The S motor’s bigger-bored 3.2-liter spools out 250 at a slightly lower 6250 rpm. Opting for the S does net a needed sixth ratio for the slick-shifting manual transaxle. This is simply a variant on the transaxle used in the 911 Carrera. Shifting and clutching are precise and low effort. Leaving hard at a stoplight, however, is high effort–or at least high anxiety. Higher 4000-rpm starts spun the tires without hop, but resulted in mediocre times. In the end, our best run to 60 mph was 5.8 seconds, while our quickest run through the quarter mile took a scant 14.2 at 98.8. And when it comes time to dump speed, that firm, middle pedal calls on four huge, cross-drilled disc brake rotors augmented with sophisticated ABS. Their best response to a request for a full stop from 60 mph was 118 feet. That’s pretty awesome, even given the car’s lean 2855-pound curb weight. Inside the Boxster S uses unique aluminum-colored trim and gray faces on the instruments. Aluminum-colored trim is also used on the door handles, slim shift lever, and lever bezel for a “classic” sports car appearance. A single switch on the dash quickly raises and lowers the convertible top. And locking it to the windshield header is a simple one-handed throw of a single, over-center latch. With the top’s standard liner, the interior cooled quickly on hot days and pretty closely approximated the liveable quiet of a coupe at highway speeds. Simply beautiful, terrifically fun, and remarkably civilized in day-to-day driving, the Boxster S makes instant fans out of new drivers. This 2001 Porsche Boxster S is in very nice condition overall. The original radio ceased working and was just replaced with a new Kenwood CD player with a USB input to play music from your phone or flash drive. A new battery was installed less than 50 miles ago. As you can see in the tire picture there is plenty of tread left. With 97,124 miles (will increase as test driven) this Boxster has many more miles of enjoyment to give to it's new owner. I do want to point out, as can be seen in the pictures, there is an issue with the rear window. It is very clear, but it does have a small crack about half way up on the drivers side. I wanted to point it out so the new owner is not surprised when they see the car in person. I am including a tube of cabriodoc crystal clear sealant that can be used to seal the crack. Why buy a convertible in the middle of winter? Because this is when prices on convertibles tend to be the lowest.
