Nash Motors made a splash with the Rambler in 1950, pioneering the upscale small car for the American market. By 1958, parent company American Motors Corporation had made the Rambler into its own marque, and had a genuine hit in the flagship Ambassador. By 1961, the Ambassador V-8 by Rambler--as this car, available in sedan and Cross Country station wagon forms, was officially known--had a distinctive new style, efficiently roomy accommodations and eight-cylinder power, and it represented a solid, outside-of-the-box choice for the discerning customer.Billing itself as a compact luxury car, the Ambassador stood apart from the Big Three competition with its relative size and price: While the 117-inch wheelbase and 199-inch overall length of the $2,682 AMC seem generous today, they were expensive and small compared to the shared 119-inch wheelbase and 209.3/209.9-inch overall lengths of the competing $2,697 Chevrolet Impala V-8 and $2,706 Ford Galaxie V-8, respectively. Another unusual selling point was its ultra-modern "Single-Unit" monocoque construction, a design feature shared by few American cars at the time. While this unit-body design paid dividends in solid construction, it made the industry-standard annual facelifts challenging--nonetheless, clever designers made noticeable changes to maintain this car's visual freshness.The 1961 Ambassador's reverse-slant C-pillar illustrated the body's link to the 1956 Rambler, but the two were significantly different. The new car wore a panoramic windshield, thinner C-pillars and redesigned rear fenders, with vestigial canted tailfins, as well as fresh front styling and body trim. Replacing the tall and busy nose treatment that the Ambassador had worn since 1958 was a lower hood with a recessed center section, slightly inset quad headlamps that flanked a smaller trapezoidal-shaped grille, and scalloped front fenders with protruding lower edges.Providing ample motivation was an overhead-valve 327-cu.in. V-8 featuring a 4.00 x 3.25-inch bore and stroke, 8.7-compression and a two-barrel Holley H-2040 carburetor. With a single exhaust, this engine made 250 hp at 4,700 RPM and 340-lb.ft. of torque at 2,600 RPM; with the optional four-barrel Holley carburetor and dual exhausts, it made 270 hp and 360-lb.ft.
