Vehicle Detail
Friends, if you're a classic Corvette lover... even just a beautiful car aficionado... Your golden chance to own an iconic piece of American muscle -- in a NO RESERVE auction -- is finally here. And as you can see... she's a real HEAD TURNER. I cannot take this car anyplace without kids on the side of the road stopping and pointing (even cheering!)... folks at the gas station coming up to compliment me... even people in the parking lot shaking my hand and congratulating me. It's all because this is a car that STANDS OUT. And not just from the ho-hum, BORING modern cars that fill the streets today... but even from her peers in the Corvette family. (I've even had NEW corvette owners ask me to trade! True story.) But now the time has come for me to pass on this girl to her new beau. I've had hip replacement surgery (and two knee replacements too, for good measure). It's just not easy for me to get in and out of this low-rise sports car anymore. Ahh, I hate to see her go... but I take comfort in knowing she'll be out on the open roads again soon, turning heads and popping out eyes... just like she was always meant to do. (Will you be the new guy behind the wheel getting all this attention?) Now, before I let her go, let me give you the lowdown... or as they say, the "good, bad, and ugly." You've heard a lot of the good already. But lets talk guts for a minute (hers, not yours -- you only need guts to get behind the wheel if you're a real introvert who doesn't like people fawning over his vehicle)... Chevy put a brand new 350 cubic inch tuned-port injection V8 under her hood. It produces 230 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque at the wheels. In other words... When you push the gas, YOU'RE GONNA KNOW IT. (So will everyone else around you at the stoplight.) The 4-speed automatic transmission (with overdrive) will have you cruising at speed (on her four custom honeycomb wheels) before you even know it. And if you need to downshift... just press that petal and feel her rear back and GO. But all things being equal... Let's not forget this girl is in her early thirties now... and like all beauties by this age, a little bit of TLC is in order. So let's go through her aches and pains... (I'll try to be as exhaustive as possible here... so you know exactly what you're looking at, if you want to put her back into mint condition.) Her power plant boasts 145k miles. I always let her warm up before hitting the road. (You don't play sports at 33 without stretching first... and it's really no different for a sports car.) Any initial roughness tends to settle down once she's up at operating temp.I've changed her injectors in the past but she may be up for another set before long. Or she may just need some good injector cleaner put through her veins. I haven't been able to drive her regularly for over a year (since before my surgery) so I'm honestly not up on her latest proclivities. And you know classic cars always have their proclivities...I do know that she needs some tie rod work up front. The front wheels are not aligned properly. It causes the drivers' side tire to wear unevenly (see the picture). And you can feel it in the steering wheel when you get her up to speed. The front brakes could probably use a good change soon too, if I recall correctly.Since she's been sitting idle, something keeps pulling her battery down. I just don't turn the motor over frequently enough to keep her from running out of juice. (When I throw the charger on her, she comes right back to life... so I imagine with regular use this wouldn't be an issue.)The rear antenna motor does not raise and lower the antenna when the radio comes on. (Fortunately the antenna is raised most of the way so radio reception is not a problem.) Her fiberglass hood has some hairline cracks in the paint near the top, front corner of the passenger door. I had the hood repaired after a minor fender bender (the first and ONLY I ever had in her). The company said the repair job was good for the life of the vehicle. So I can put you in touch with them if you want to try to get them buffed out. They're really only noticeable at fairly close range (see picture).Other minor pitting and scrapes in the paint do exist across the body. But they're not as substantial as the hairline cracks mentioned above... and impossible to notice except at very close range. (Like when kneeling down and putting your face a foot or two away from them.)The hood's interior resting mechanism needs to be replaced (see picture, it's why I had to use a broom handle to keep the roof propped open). Moving to the interior, the brown leather interior is nice overall, but again there are plenty of little fixes needed to bring her back to showroom quality. For example, both seats are power seats. But I believe only the passenger seat is operable. The windows are power too. Both of them work, but they take their time getting up and down now. (Just like me!)The window tint film has scrapes on both windows (see pictures). They're not enough to make the cabin bright or anything... but the windows could use a new tint job to really look nice.Below the windows, the carpeting on the bottom of the doors is somewhat scraped from folks exiting the vehicle.Little things like one of the window control switches or the plastic gear indicator beside the gearshift have broken loose. It doesn't affect the operation of either. But they'd have to get fixed to make her totally like new again. The removable sunroof top has gotten kinda foggy. I took her to a car wash and the guy there thought we was doing me a favor by adding in a free wax job. Wrong! I've had it buffed out and it's better than it was... but a full stripping and cleaning is probably still in order to make it super clear again. The CD player is an aftermarket unit that sits in the storage compartment behind the drivers seat. I never really played CDs so I'm not sure if it's operable. I wouldn't be surprised if it's frozen up from lack of use. But it might be okay too.The indicator lights in the dash are somewhat dim. They still look fine at nighttime, but daytime driving makes them a bit hard to see. I'd fix this if I were going to keep her.The leather seats have some minor scrapes and tears. Nothing terrible (see pictures) but definitely not in mint condition in this state. The weather stripping around the doors and windows is worn. It's not like you can see gaps when the doors are closed and I don't think I ever had any issue with water seeping in. But it could use a new set if you really wanted to get her back into like new condition. The plastic interior liner at the base of the hatchback glass had come lose. I used some finishing screws to tighten it back down. I probably should have colored over them with a black sharpie for looks. Maybe I still will before she's sold. It's a pretty minor thing, but as I say I'm trying to keep this list as exhaustive as possible here.Hmmmm.... that's about it. I can't think of anything else. But hey, she's 33 and my brain is over twice that... so don't be surprised if anything else pops up along the way. There's always all price to pay for cruising in style in a classic car, after all. Bottom line: I'd give her front wheels, the dashboard lights, and possibly the fuel injectors some TLC to make her a reliable daily driver again. Then I'd slowly work on all the little details above if you really want to make her "showroom ready" in like-new condition. But either way, this girl's still got a LOT of fun and good times left in her. For the right guy, a brand new love affair with the greatest HEAD TURNER car I've ever had the pleasure of owning might just be around the corner. (Just act fast... this NO RESERVE auction is only up for 72 hours. Winner take all. After that, she's gone for good...) Thanks for your interest, George P.S. - If you have any additional questions, by all means contact me and I'll do my very best to answer them. Good luck! P.P.S. - Want to see her in action? I posted a quick video of her going through her paces to Youtube. Contact me and I can send you the link. (Ebay won't let me include it here...)
