Vehicle Detail
This is a non-stock rebuild of a 1971, five speed Bonneville. Yes, the factory did offer a few of these Quaife 5 speeds that year, mainly for racing or other purposes. They made a small quantity of them in '71 then offered the 5 speed as a standard feature in '72. This one is not a numbers matching bike. Both the Frame and Motor are genuine T120RV GE numbers, but they are 964 digits apart. I do have a clear NC title, in my name. It is likely the motor was separated from it's original frame to go into a racing set-up, then who knows what happened to the original. Unfortunately, if this bike has a competition history, it's been lost to time. At any rate, this up front disclosure is presented and now out of our way. If you are searching for a fully stock machine, this may not be the best candidate for your consideration. The good news is this motorcycle has been completely disassembled down to the crankshaft with the sludge trap cleaned and rebuilt up from there. New pistons, valves, guides, etc. Gearbox has been stripped and rebuilt. Same with the primary. New clutch and sprockets. Electronic ignition, new wiring harness, battery, all electrics, etc. The frame was stripped, (no grit got in the oil bearing section) cleaned and painted with a metallic charcoal finish. Original color would have been Dove Grey. My color choice is sort of a compromise between the Dove Grey everyone hated and the Black everyone went to. Why not be a little different? Hardened alloy skid plate protects her bottom. The Metallic Blue paint with White/gold stripes is stunning! Triumph badges are custom machined and hand shaped to conform perfectly to the curves of the tank. New seat. Mid-sixties tail light (it was the coolest one Triumph ever produced... I think...) New front fork tubes and seals. New replica instruments (please note the dashboard labeling... correct "Lucas" nomenclature!) Genuine Lucas headlight lens. Non-stock (but cool) front fender and side covers. Even a "stealth" rear chain guard. (see if you can find it) Hagon rear shocks, new rear chain. This little sweetie starts up easily and runs like a well sorted Triumph should. You can ride all day with the headlight on and the charging system keeps up. The bike's engine compartment is not Hermetically sealed and she does leak a little bit of oil. It's a Triumph. A couple of years ago I took her out on the Britbike.com Three-State ride and she purred happily along all day. By the way, the custom tuned high pipes with Norton S type heat shields looks and sounds great! I shouldn't sell this bike, but I've got to let her go so my better half just might let me build another one. :-( By request, I have uploaded two short video clips of the bike on youtube. Feel free to look them up: 1) "71 Triumph Start up" & 2) "71 Triumph Idle" Thanks for looking!
