Vehicle Detail
This is really a nice bike, built 12/75. 38k actual miles. VIN GL1-2017757, eng GL1E-2017005. Clear Indiana title! Locally owned it's entire life, I purchased it from the grandson of the original owner. Very clean and was probably kept inside, just look at those gauges. Original owner's manuals. Original engine. Original paint. New tires last year, new oil, filter, coolant flush and fill this weekend. This bike has sat a lot during it's lifetime, that is obvious with the low miles and nice condition. It was converted to a desirable single carb setup and upgraded to electronic ignition about 10 years ago at Grumpy's Gold Wings in Thorntown IN. I wondered why a single carb was so desirable, he told me the 4 carb original setup is about a thousand bucks to rebuild and tune. I called another motorcycle shop just to see, $1000 bucks, you might want to think about that when looking at other Wing's that need carb work. (See below about this carb set up from Cycle Innovations). The aluminum parts, valve and timing covers will polish up nicely. I don't know much about these GW's but have done much research and spoke with those that do. The '75-'76's are the most sought after because of something to do with the valves that were changed in 1977. I had a '78 recently and this bike has considerably more power, it is fast and runs smooth at speed, shifts as it should. It does have a slight hard start and idle issue and when I first got it she puffed out blueish smoke quite a bit at start up. I have read several causes for this...timing, valves, sticking oil rings, carb, head gasket, over filled oil, etc. I was told all GW's smoke a bit especially when they sit on their side stand. Googling this issue and speaking with GW guys, it sounds like it really needs to be ridden. I have ridden it four times on short 2 mile trips now and it does not smoke at start up or while riding (never smoked while riding, only when started). Choke is operating but the bike doesn't seem to respond ("pump" it a couple of times and it fires right up but you have to feather the throttle and keep it above 1500 rpm or it will die). The oil has no water in it. There are no leaks. Bike still has the emergency kicker. This classic needs someone who knows how to fix the carb and make adjustments on it. It is a gorgeous red bike. Seat is perfect, brakes, lights, signals, cooling fan, gauges....all work as they should. The ends of the exhaust were cut off so they could put on extensions to clear the side bags (which you can have if you want them, they are fiberglass and have locks-SOLD no longer available). The mini ape style bars and seat make this very comfortable to ride. Pretty factory red paint, tank sides and top have a few spots, probably from brake fluid. Look closely at the pictures. I forgot to put the bolts back in the exhaust where I removed the passenger foot boards. Pictures were taken on two different days because I put the bolts in. I do have the pegs but they have no rubber and no springs to hold them up, so I will not put them back on. Sold as-is. I will assist your shipper but bike will need to be paid for in full. $250 non-refundable deposit due at auctions end. An informed viewer told me:You have a manifold made and patented by CYCLE INNOVATIONS out of Florida it has a HOLLEY 1940 Carburetor specially modified by Holley for the Goldwing. They went out of business about 2002. I have one on my 1978 GL1000 I own now. I had one on my 1980 GL1100 in 2011. These manifolds were foundry cast not welded sheet metal or tubing. Best of the best. Is it a 1 or 2 barrel?Single . They used them on International Scout 4 cylinder, also Ford 6 cylinders. Your carburetor has unique linkage that is no longer available but the kits do work. If you go on line google Cycle innovation single carburetor installation manual its still there and very helpful about 20 pages. My neighbor used to have a motorcycle shop in Tampa and his 1979 GL1000 has the conversion also. He rebuilt mine and dialed it in. Thanks CARL. UPDATE: Started her up today (6/25) and rode around after she sat for a few days, no more smoke than a normal Goldwing when first started. On Jun-27-17 at 12:42:48 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE: I started up the bike this morning and smoke rolled out pretty good, it has been sitting on the side stand, I cannot get it up on the center stand by myself to see if this would help. The bike started instantly, the smoke eventually cleared after awhile and I rode it about 2 miles, it doesn't smoke while riding or stopping at stop signs, only at first when cold.
