Vehicle Detail

1964 Triumph 3TA Bathtub Frame number H33452 Engine number 3TA H33452 Triumph re-entered the 350cc class in 1957 with the introduction of the Twenty One, its arrival ushering in Triumph's unitary construction era. Mr. Edward Turner recognized the need for a model that bridged the gap between 2 and 4 wheels, so the new model was readily distinguishable by its Shell Blue metallic finish and 'bathtub' rear enclosure to keep the rider clean. With just 18.5bhp on tap, Triumph's smallest twin lacked the urgent acceleration of its larger brethren, but nevertheless was a capable tourer good for around 80mph while delivering excellent fuel economy. 'One of the swiftest standard British-made 350cc roadsters tested by Motor Cycling, the Triumph Twenty One combines an untiring zest for high-speed cruising with safe handling and a remarkably economical fuel consumption,' it was reported. Although well received in the old world American dealers and motorcyclists had mixed feelings about these bikes and the "Tins" were frequently removed and substituted with regular fenders and headlight buckets which means that a complete, original, bathtub Triumph is a pretty rare commodity these days. The matching-numbers example of Triumph’s super-stylish 3TA offered here was imported by the previous owner some years ago from England as a fully restored machine. Sold to a renowned restorer, the bike has been meticulously maintained and as such, mechanically, the bike is in excellent condition. The engine starts easily, more often than not on the first or 2nd kick, idles well and has good, responsive power. The bike shifts well through all gears with a good clutch. Brakes, and suspension all work perfectly, as do the electrical systems. The bike is as good cosmetically as it rides. It has held up well since the full restoration and presents nicely. There is a re-pop fibreglass front fender, but a genuine item should be an easy item to source. This is an excellent example of a piece of British motorcycling iconic history, offered in excellent condition and ready to show or ride anywhere.
