Vehicle Detail

Honda CBX Custom, built with a 1979 Honda CBX 1050 six cylinder engine, custom frame with updated geometry, suspension and brakes, comparable to a late-model Honda CBR 1000. The whole front-end—the forks, triple clamp and controls are from a 2014 Honda CBR1000RR, as are the front and rear 17” wheels and brakes. The aluminum gas tank, rear swingarm and rear suspension are from a 2014 Ducati 899 Panigale. The rear seat and subframe is from a 1299 Panigale. Tires are new Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp, 120/70-17 and 180/55-17. The chromoly frame was jig-built and professionally tig-welded, powdercoated 60%-gloss black. Wheelbase is 60”, rake and trail are 24 degrees and 3.7 inches, or the same as a late model Honda CBR1000. Bike weight is similar also. The motor is moved forward and down from stock 1979 specs. Swingarm length is 21”. Seat height is 31”-31.5”. Rear ride height is adjustable with the Ducati adjustable suspension link. Front motor mounts are custom CNC aluminum billet. Gearing is 17/43. The countershaft sprocket is a custom-built ½” offset to center the motor with the wheel centerline. Weight of the bike with oil but no gas is 452 lbs. I used a 1982 donor frame for the serial number, the frame is engraved and Arizona titled/registered as a 1982 Honda CBX. If clip-ons are not to your liking, I have a set of Rizoma Ducati Monster bars with mounts to the Honda to triple-clamp to get more upright riding position. The motor is a 1979, serial number CB1E-2002767. It is modified from stock. The carburetors are a set of classic Rick’s Tricks 29mm Mikuni Smoothbores. Rubber manifolds are in excellent condition. Carbs have been completely cleaned and refurbished by Jack at Old School Carbs. The intakes and exhaust tracks have a mild port and polish. The intake valves are aftermarket. I lapped the valves and installed new valve seals. The pistons are low-mileage pop-up 65MM. I flex honed the cylinders and installed new rings and all new engine gaskets. The cams are mild first stage Web cams. Valves adjusted to spec after run-in. The ignition is Dyna S, and a Rick’s Electric heavy duty starter is fitted. I installed new clutch plates. Motor covers have stainless allen bolts. Oil cooler is a hi-capacity German made cooler with braided stainless oil lines and AN fittings. There is a video of the motor running on You Tube https://youtu.be/K7XU9JYVtpc Wiring is all new, utilizing the 2014 Honda CBR controls, with high/low-beam LED headlight, turn signals, horn, start button, kill button, tail and brake lights. The highest capacity CBX Shorai battery is used. A Trail-Tech Vapor gauge has speedometer, odometer and tachometer. The bike also has a battery volt gauge. I have the custom wiring schematic, and the factory CBX manual. There’s a couple things left to address on the bike. One is that the clutch does not want to disengage. Not surprising as the bike sat for thirty years. I recently removed the clutch and found the plates stuck together. I cleaned and installed new plates (after soaking them in oil overnight), but it still doesn’t want to disengage, even though it is depressing. I haven’t gone back to investigate. The second issue is the exhaust. I purchased a 1979 CBX (with missing parts) to get the modified motor. It came with a six into one exhaust that went under the oil pan. The header pipes were rusted, so I had everything sandblasted and ceramic coated. Then I added a 4” stainless megaphone with a 1.5” muffler core. I also have a bit-louder spare megaphone/muffler with a 2” core. Since I wanted to lower the motor, I planned to get it running with the 6-1 and then build a 6 into 6 stainless along either side. As it is now, the exhaust only has 3” ground clearance. The oil pan has 5.75” clearance at its lowest point. The bike height is adjustable up or down from that point with the rear link and the front forks. The build has zero miles on it. Throughout my life, I’ve ridden dirt motorcycles and raced off-road bikes and cars and ridden a little on the street. I’ve built street cars, off-road cars and other motorcycles, but I quit riding at 67. At 69, I’m not up to this bike, but wanted to build it for the joy of it. Now it’s up for sale. I’d love to keep the bike as garage jewelry, but I need to recoup some of the ridiculous sum I spent building it. I have the pictures of the year-long build process, the factory manual, and the above-mentioned spare parts. Bike is in Scottsdale Arizona. Contact me with questions.
