Vehicle Detail
1956 AJS 18CSRare Factory Competition Scrambler AJS was founded in 1909. Early on, the company held over 100 world records and had an excellent racing heritage. By the mid-fifties Matchless had taken over the firm and "badge-engineered" their motorcycles under the AJS and Matchless brands. This example is a genuine 1956 18CS Competition Scrambler. This particular bike looks to have been originally fitted with a generator and lights, but it's impossible to know for sure. All of the lighting and generator components are period to the motorcycle. Many Scramblers were strictly off-road machines and had no lighting. This bike needs a full restoration. The engine turns over and has compression. The transmission shifts through the gears, however the kick starter is frozen, but putting the bike in gear and rolling it will turn the engine. The bike has lots of surface rust and the chrome is entirely gone from the (correct) 21" front wheel. The chrome is pretty good on the correct 19" rear wheel. There is a bit of bondo dent repair in the bare aluminum gas tank as seen in the photos. The seat pan is good, although the original upholstery is shot. The sheetmetal primary cover is missing. The piece is common to the regular Model 18 and is not difficult nor expensive to obtain. Most all of the SUPER rare goodies are here (the aluminum front fender is missing). The aluminum Scrambler fuel tank, aluminum rear fender with number plate mount, the Smiths speedo and headlight, and the Lucas Competition magneto. The Amal carb is the correct 389/12. The Burman gearbox is number GB27 B56 B274, indicating it is a 1956 manufacture ("B56") which is likely original. The frame number 7261C is also correct for the 1956 18CS. The engine number is self explanatory. As you can see this is the REAL deal. A clear California title in my name will be supplied. It is in process and will come in 2-3 weeks. Payment is due in full within 3 days of auction end. This motorcycle is not advertised anywhere else-this auction is the exclusive opportunity to buy it.
