Pedigree: Forty years after Ford unleashed its all-conquering Cobra Jet Mustangs into NHRA Super Stock competition, it repeated that historic feat with the 2008 Ford Mustang FR500 Cobra Jet aimed at NHRA’s sportsman classes. High-profile Ford performance dealer Bob Tasca conceived the first Cobra Jet in 1968, when he challenged Dearborn with his version of a lightweight Mustang Fastback powered by a 428 CI FE big-block engine specially built by Tasca’s engine expert John Healey. Testing at Ford’s Dearborn test track showed that it was the quickest Mustang ever, and Ford decided to follow Tasca’s formula building 50 lightweight Mustangs powered by the new engine that first carried the Cobra Jet name. Like its namesake, the 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang was limited to 50 production race-ready examples specially configured for NHRA drag racing. Like its sister Mustang Challenge FR500S and the FR500C production racer for Grand Am road racing, the FR500CJ were turnkey cars available through Ford Racing, and all were snapped up in record time. One of the 50 produced andwears both the optional Ford Cobra Jet graphics and just 38 miles on the odometer car has been driven to local events and is surprisingly street able .
