BODYWORK/TRIM A highly tweaked evolution of the 996, the 997 chassis allowed Porsche to keep up with the industry trend of seemingly endless refinement while perpetuating the brand's identity as a purveyor of hardcore sports cars. Dressed in a classy coat of Guards Red 2-stage, there's no doubt the car puts a vivid twist on a traditional favorite. Judging by appearance, that paint coats a pristine body that's been meticulously pampered and carefully protected since it rolled off Porsche's Stuttgart assembly line. That body's professionally finished surfaces are straight and solid under a black, power operated roof. Fit and finish are the typical, high quality stuff you'd expect from a flagship automaker. And today, this awesome roadster is one of the coolest sports cars on the market! ENGINE Specific kinds of cars are immediately recognizable by visual cues, and this Porsche's rear-engine layout puts it in an elite class that features the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari and sister-brand Audi. The car's already spry 6-cylinder benefits from Direct Fuel Injection, dry-sump lubrication and VarioCam timing, which help twist a stout 380 horsepower into a smooth 310 lb./ft. of torque. The main feature is a Sport Chrono Package that tightens communication between Motronic engine management, Porsche Stability Management, Porsche Active Suspension Management and the car's Tiptronic S transmission. Speaking of that transmission, it spins seamless power through six forward gears. Step on the other pedal and you'll encounter big, Porsche-branded calipers, which efficiently utilize vented and cross-drilled rotors. Those brakes cradle modern power steering and a fully independent sport suspension. And everything rolls on machined aluminum wheels, which crank two 235/35ZR19 Bridgestone Potenzas in front of two 295/30ZR19 Hankook Ventus V12 evos. INTERIOR Inside this slick Carrera, it's all about a symbiotic relationship between cutting edge European performance and traditional 'old world' luxury. At the center of the car, leather-lined seats, which are trimmed in attractive aluminum, show hardly any wear at all. At the front of those seats, a stylish, aluminum-trimmed dash hangs clear telemetry beside a crisp Bose sound system that's complete with navigation, cellular capability and a CD/DVD player. At the base of that dash, like-new carpet, which is protected by color-keyed floor mats, anchors a full-length console and aluminum-trimmed shifter between attractive, "Carrera S" sill plates.
