Vehicle Detail
Beautiful 1983 Toyota 4x4 Long bed Pickup First generation Toyota 4x4 Pickup with 126k miles. This truck is a Deluxe Model with a nice options list. 5 Speed manual Transmission Factory A/C Power steering Power brakes SR5 woodgrain look dash SR5 three spoke leather wrapped steering wheel Rare Factory digital clock Period correct vintage aftermarket AM/FM cassette radio in unmodified dash openings This is one of the nicest equipped deluxe model trucks that we have come across in some time. The truck was a one family owned truck until we purchased it last summer. We brought it to the east coast from Hemet California where it was originally purchased and spent all of its days. The plan was to do a frame off restoration of this truck as we have done in the past. Once we received the truck and began to go through it our plans changed. The truck turned out to be in much better condition than we first thought. The California desert climate had done a nice job preserving the truck and mechanically it operated so well that we decided to do only cosmetic reconditioning and minor mechanical upgrades. This truck originally came to us in SR5 striping and black painted bumpers, grill, headlight buckets, and side mirrors The stripes looked cool and had been recently applied but since this was a Deluxe truck and not an SR5 truck all the striping was removed With the striping removed the truck looked better and more correct for the Deluxe model. Since the truck came without a bumper, a Warrior tube bumper was added. The truck had the SR5 styled wheels on a set of 15 year old BGF Mud-Terrain tires that still had 50% tread but I opted to upgrade to a brand new set of vintage Land Cruiser wheels and Toyota Factory hub caps. I had the wheels professionally powdercoated to increase their durability and beauty. Here's a close up look at a wheel. The tires are new Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's and I have had excellent results with these on many of my trucks. I've never been a big fan of the black painted bumpers and grills so this is what I did. Removed the grill, bumper, and headlight buckets and cleaned off 32 years of desert dust. Then I upgraded to the chrome look... Guess I'm a sucker for shiny things... Wherever possible, I replaced screws, nuts and bolts with stainless steel hardware. The interior was in decent condition but 32 years of desert heat had taken its toll. The dash had cracks, the steering wheel had split, and the carpet was dry and crunchy. With the dash cover removed you can see that it was cracked, dry, and dusty. I was impressed with the condition and function of the Toyota digital clock and the old school radio cassette player. In the photo below you can see the acculumation of desert dust found under the dash panel. To clean up the look, I upgraded to the SR5 style woodgrain dash and added a new Toyota factory dash pad. Also notice the rust free floor. We don't see this on the eastcoast very often. Here's the new carpet going in... The original seats were in nice condition but the driver's seat showed some wear and the fabric seemed brittle from the heat. I had the seats reupholstered with retro-looking fabric which really recaptured the 80's look. Also the seat tray was an excellent location for the CB radio. The door panels were in great condition so I left them as is. Here's the original black dash panel which looks fine... But I think the woodgrain dash looks great. 126k on the clock so its just broken in. The cracked Deluxe Truck steering wheel was replaced with a nice three spoke leather wrapped SR5 steering wheel After I hosed off the desert dust here's what the underside looked like...(Check out the spare tire chain in the foreground. Looks almost new!) We just don't see unrestored Toyota Truck's undersides looking like this here after 32 years. I have replaced all of the shocks with Bilstein gas charged shocks at all four corners and the ride is great. Rolled down the spare tire and found the original factory Bridgestone Desert Dueler spare tire and wheel in very good condition. The tire even has the old Toyota emblem molded on its side so I know its original. The engine is original and has never been apart. Since this is an original California car it has all of its pollution control systems still in working order. SC does require smog testing so I cannot verify its function. See CarFax for smog test history. All the belts have been replaced. The battery is new from Toyota. The factory A/C has been upgraded to the new Freon 134 and blows nice and cold. Master cylinder and slave cylinder have been replaced. The starter is new from Toyota and not an aftermarket part. Fuel pump and fuel filter are also new. Wiper blades are new and period correct. Wiper reservoir has been flushed and new wiper fluid added and works great. The previous owner had the bed repainted and it looks great. No spray on bed liner to hide stuff so you can lift the bed mat and see its condition. The tool box comes with the truck but can be removed if you like the total vintage look. Solid rustfree box looks great Since we wanted to make this truck mechanically sound we had the transmission pulled because I noticed that the input shaft bearing was making noise in all gears but 4th. These '83 trucks had weak input shaft bearings originally and were actually recalled by Toyota back in the 80s. This one had never been replaced so we took this opportunity to rebuild the transmission with Marlin Crawler parts and install a new 1200 lb. Marlin Crawler clutch. Now it shifts like a new truck and the clutch is buttery smooth. The cab has its share of little dings and scratches that just don't show up in photos so a personal inspection is encouraged. Overall this is a great little truck that drives as nice as it looks. The lucky winning bidder in this Reserve Auction will have this beautiful truck sitting in your driveway before Christmas.
