Vehicle Detail

1964 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb 4-Door SedanOne owner familyPurchased the car new at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Germany This beautiful classic black and white Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb 4-door sedan is selling from one family ownership since being purchased by the late Robert and Margaret Hillis of Binghamton, New York at the Sindelfingen factory near Stuttgart, Germany on June 8, 1964. For many more photographs click here or copy and paste www.timlakebooks.com/blog.html and scroll to the bottom of the page. Family records show that Robert and Margaret Hillis traveled to Europe to purchase this car and take it on a driving tour through Germany's Black Forest, to Innsbruck, Austria, over the Alps, into Italy, along the Italian and French Riveria to Nice and Monaco, France. The Hillis' then drove the car back over the Alps, into the Rhine River Valley and Koblenz, Germany, into Luxembourg and Belgium, and then to Holland before arranging for this quality German-made automobile to be shipped to their home in Binghamton, New York. The Hillis family was destined to own a great German-made Mercedes-Benz. On their June 1964 flight from New York to Paris to obtain this car, they reported sitting next to Maria Dolores Elizabeth Schuschnigg, daughter of the Nazi-ousted Chancellor of Austria (1934-1938), Kurt von Schuschnigg. See the photos with diary entries for the family's purchase of the automobile. From Paris, the Hillis' took the famed Orient Express to Stuttgart, Germany and then hired a car to take them to the sprawling Mercedes-Benz factory in Sindelfingen (a Stuttgart suburb). Before setting out on their European tour in their beautiful new car, they toured the Mercedes-Benz factory, still recovering from near complete devastation in WW II. After shipping the car to the United States, the Hillis' used it strictly for pleasure. Despite its age, it has less than 100,000 miles on the odometer. In 2002, after the death of Mr. Hillis (Robert W. Hillis, Sr.) it was passed down in the extended family to its present owner near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The seller is the sister of Mrs. Robert Hillis, Jr. Therefore, the car has family provenance because it has remained within the extended Hillis family since its purchase in 1964. Some restoration work has been done on this classic Mercedes-Benz with strict attention paid to authentic and original appearance. Seat belts have been installed to adhere to modern safety laws. The car body and rockers are near rust-free, and the interior is very clean. There is low mileage for a 1964 auto, at 95,220. This is the fuel-injected 220 SEb, the higher quality car of this particular model. Detailed restoration records can be provided for inspection to a serious buyer. It is the family's hope that a sincere restoration buyer will be interested in this car. See it unveiled here: As you can see from the photographs and the video, this Mercedes-Benz has been well cared for and kept. However, it is a 1964 model and, therefore, is a great candidate for further restoration. The engine purrs and hums. Listen to it, here: Watch and listen to the engine starting, and experience driving this classic Mercedes-Benz from inside the car, here: This car is in a vintage 1800s Pennsylvania stone barn about 40 miles west of Philadelphia. The buyer must arrange pickup or shipping at your cost. Clear Pa title document is ready for transfer to a new owner. In Pennsylvania, title transfers must be done at a "tag store" with a notary, and document filing with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All tax and filing fees are the responsibility of the buyer at the time of title transfer. This car is being sold as is. For many more photographs click here or copy and paste www.timlakebooks.com/blog.html and scroll to the bottom of the page. Upon auction completion, a $600 non-refundable deposit payment must be made via PayPal within 24 hours. Final payment is due at the time of title transfer with a cashier's or certified bank check drawn only from a major U.S. bank. No personal or business checks accepted. On Nov-29-15 at 18:10:05 PST, seller added the following information: November 29, 2015: Answers to a few questions from bidders: There is no air conditioning. This is a 1964 model and air conditioning was very limited in cars of this era. There are no power locks or power windows. The doors lock with a manual button and the windows are hand-cranked open and closed. There are wing vents on the driver and passenger side windows. There does not appear to be a Mercedes-Benz tool kit in the trunk but the jack kit is in place along with the spare wheel and tire. The car has been painted and the documents showing limited restoration are to be included with the document transfer. The car has been mostly barn kept and it has not been driven in the winter. It was used mostly for pleasure driving. There are limited maintenance records. There are records that describe the restoration work. The Mercedes-Benz restoration expert has emailed this message: I briefly went through my notes and I painted the front clip, roof, and trunk lid. The car was originally all black and painted the roof white. This was a mercedes option for this model. There was some front end rust which was repaired in metal and the front cross member was replaced. At the time I think the rockers were solid and did not have to repair them. A lot of mechanicals were addressed including front mounts, trans mount, shifter bushings, brakes including booster, drive shaft rag joint, new tires, all ignition parts, fuel sender, gas tank, injection tune, and much detailing to save the interior. The Pennsylvania (USA) title is clear, without lien, and is ready for immediate transfer with a notarized signature. The car is located within 40 miles of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware shipping ports for easy shipment overseas. The Newark, New Jersey (New York) shipping port is located about 85 miles away. The only recent repair necessary was the simple replacement of a ten-inch-long pressurized gas line hose from the gas tank to the fuel pump because of a small slit in the old hose that caused a leak. The replacement fuel-injector quality hose resolved the engine's high idling issue you may have noticed in one of the videos. After the gas line hose was replaced, full compression was restored to the fuel system and the engine now idles low and smoothly. It can be heard in the subsequent video. Most of the paperwork (a large 8 1/2 x 11 envelope) will be included in the document transfer. It spells out the limited restoration described above. I am trying to determine if the diary will be included. At the very least, a scanned copy of the diary is readily available. I would be happy to answer any more questions you might have. Good luck bidding. Remember, this car is from 1964 and is a quality automobile with an interesting history. There are not many like this one around anymore. Tim Lakewww.timlakebooks.com
