Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a 1988 Mercedes Benz 560SL Roadster Although not shown in the pictures, there IS a removable hardtop in matching red color. It may be hard to believe, but in 1988, the vaunted Mercedes Benz 560SL retailed for $61,131. Even today that amount of money would buy a very fine car. In 1988, this was an extraordinary price to pay for luxury. Then again, the 560SL was iconic and symbolized true success in an era where "greed was good". Mercedes couldn't make enough of these classic roadsters it would seem. 12,193 560SLs were made in 1988. Today, they have fully suffered their depreciation curve and now represent a true collector's car at an affordable price. Unlike the 380SL (and even the 450SL), the 560SL took advantage of their bulletproof 5.6 liter engine to power this small convertible. The same motor, in fact, that was placed in their beautiful 560SEL sedan. If this engine could power that land yacht, then it could easily move the SL down the road. While not fast by today's standards, the 560SL is brisk - and gentlemanly, if you will. She has plenty of torque and this is exactly why her respectable torque gives one the impression "off the line" speed. The car feels very heavy but only weighs 3,700 lbs. Road tests of the day put the 0-60 times at 7 seconds and the top speed near 140. Of course, the quality of the SL is legendary and her ride is sedan smooth. The 1988 560SL was the second to the last year for this body style (Mercedes internal code R107). The last two years seem to be worth the most in collectors circles. It's easy to see why - you can't drive anywhere today and not have someone positively comment on this beautiful red roadster. Here are details on our car She has low mileage - 80,606.She runs like new She shifts and brakes perfectlyHer interior is beautiful with no rips, tears and very little fading or wear (if any) The burled walnut wood, on the console and dash, is not faded and only slightly cracked in places (very common). New console wood is available on Ebay. Her convertible top is in excellent condition - and obviously not used much - once you own one you know why (it's not automatic). The convertible top is original and in near perfect conditionShe DOES come with a hardtop - in red colorShe has an aftermarket radio/cd player with usb and satellite features (I'll get name and model and post it) and sounds reasonably good (better than the factory)There are two speakers mounted in the rear storage area (which is not factory but sound pretty good) - there are also the factory installed speakers in the dash. There are two factory handles in the glove box to release the convertible and hard top. The clamshell works perfectly too. She has a new battery (which is massive and expensive), and a recent tune up Her tires are in excellent shapeShe starts every time and is very reliable She is very quiet during operation with no unusual soundsThere are no warning light on in the dash, all gauges work - even the center mounted temp gauge and the clockShe drives true and straight and has no signs of previous accident or paintworkThe trunk is extremely clean with no stains or wearThere is pinstriping on the car too - which appears to have been painted on (which is how dealerships added to the base price of the vehicle).I will also make sure that the oil is changed on the car before it ships (or you take delivery). There are a few very minor areas of surface rust - BUT - they will be professionally fixed prior to purchase. If you know 560SL's, you know that there are few areas prone to minor rust. Again, this will be fixed, as well as, all minor scratches, etc.. After all, this car is nearly 30 years old. So please do not expect a museum piece. She is, however, very nice - in fact, one of the nicest I've owned. And she drives perfectly. Such a pleasure to take her out on a warm sunny day. I love these cars and you can rest assured that they are money in the bank and will sharply appreciate. There are few on Ebay in the $40 to $60k range already. The are future classics for sure. Take a look at the pictures - these were taken today before the car has been detailed, polished and buffed. The car will be detailed professionally (and by hand) prior to delivery also. She'll look better than the pictures. Remember, she isn't new. Therefore I encourage inspections and test drives. I hate negative feedback when everyone has the right to inspections. Also, if you want to see more pictures, please ask, I'll take them. I have every confidence that she can be driven cross country but I'll assist with shipping as well. She is being sold AS-IS, WHERE IS. There is no warranty implied or expressed. I have described the car to the best of my ability and have provided high quality pictures for your reference. I don't accept bids from anyone with less than 5 positive feedbacks. I keep getting burned with last second sniping from people with zero feedback. I'll block those bids. Deposits are non refundable. This is a NO RESERVE auction. Last bidder wins. I live in Chicago and won't use the car again until next Summer - 9 months from now. So, I am selling her. You wont be disappointed.
