Vehicle Detail

For sale is a 1972 BMW 2002, VIN # 2582402. I have owned this car for just over 5 years. I have very little history on the car prior to me owning it. I initially drove the car 700 miles from El Paso, TX to its current home in northern Colorado. Since then, it has been driven maybe 200 miles. It has been garaged, covered, and on a battery tender the entire time that I have owned it. I have done no work on it except for changing the oil and installing a fresh battery. It is started at least once a month. The car shows 68,043 miles right now. The speedometer worked when I first got the car but started making a screeching noise so I disconnected it. The person I bought it from claimed the odometer did not work. True mileage unknown. Body: This car was originally painted orange (Colorado) but has been resprayed blue and now wears a coat of red paint. The paint looks OK from far away but it is not a great paint job. There are a few sections on the roof where the paint is peeling off. The trunk and engine bays are painted black. Like most roundie ‘02s, this car has been rear ended at some point. This was not properly repaired. The rear panel is not straight and there are wrinkles in the rear bumper (you can see this in the pictures). This car has some rust in the normal places. The spare tire well is weak and I believe some rust is starting to form around the pedal box. (I have not pulled up the carpet to see how extensive this is). The floor feels solid and looks good from underneath. There is not rust on the front or rear shock towers, but there is some rust forming on shelf section of the rear tire wells. I believe there may be rust on the gas filler tube, the gas tank will leak if it is filled more than ¾ of the way full. The car has spent the latter part of its life in the dry climates of Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado and I would not consider the rust to be major. Please note that the original orange paint is showing through in some of the photos (especially of the wheels wells) and that it is not rust. There are a few trim pieces missing as you can see in the pictures but most of it is intact. Engine: The engine is not original to the car. The number stamped on the block is 2573212, which indicates it is from a mid-1971 model. This has been converted to dual side draft Weber carburetors prior to my ownership. The engine runs fine, I’m not sure that the carburetors are correctly tuned but it will move down the road under its own power. The engine runs cool so it may need a thermostat replacement. The previous owner claimed that the engine had been rebuilt with extensive work done to the head but I have no documentation or proof of this. The manual choke is not connected so you have to pump the gas quite a bit to get it started if hasn’t run in a while. There is an electric fuel pump in the trunk that sometimes needs to be primed before the engine will turn over if it has been sitting for a while. The exhaust system needs some attention. It is all there but the rear mount has broken and the tail pipe and muffler are held up with wire. Transmission: The car has a 4 speed manual gear box. All forward and reverse gears work but there is a lot of play in the shifter. The clutch engages fine without slipping. The number stamped on the bell housing is: 410505/4. Brakes: The brakes in this car are weak and I would not recommend driving it a long distance without addressing them. If you press them hard, the car pulls very hard to the right. The hand brake works, but not well. They are discs in the front and drums in the rear. Wheels & Tires: Nothing special here. The wheels are 13” steel wheels with Goodyear tires. The tires are OLD, this set was originally on a different 2002 that I bought in 2001. They have decent tread. Electrical: There are several electrical issues with the car that should be looked at. One or more of the previous owners have done some “kludging” on the electrical system. The issues that I have identified: -The parking light and headlights are wired together. Pulling the headlight switch to position 1 or 2 turns on all headlights, parking, and dashboard lights. -There is a floor mounted switch to engage the high beams. I have never seen another 2002 with one so I do not believe this is correct. The switch does work to toggle the high and low beams. -The electric fuel pump in the trunk is powered by a wire run loosely to one of the fuses in the fuse block. Sometimes the car has died while I’ve been driving it and I’ve had to jiggle this wire to get the pump back on. That should be an easy fix. -The turn signal indicator on the dash does not work although the exterior turn signals work fine. The turn signals do not cancel after you turn but I would not be surprised if it came from the factory like that in 1972. -The hazard lights work, but require pushing the switch in the dash and then turning the turn signal lever to left or right. -The wipers work but require a combination of steps between the switch on the dash and the column mounted lever. Again, I have never seen another 2002 work like this. -The radio works but it does not hold the time or the presets. The constant on wire is not hooked up somewhere. -There is an aftermarket horn switch mounted under the dash. The horn works except when the headlights are on. (no idea why this would be?!?) The horn button on the steering wheel does not function. Headlights, turn signals, parking lights, and brake lights all work. The reverse lights do not. The normal ventilation fan does not turn on with the dash switch but the fan in the center console does work. The cigarette lighter has power. The interior dome light is missing. Interior: The interior of the car is intact but needs restoration. The driver’s seat is some sort of sport seat that is not original and does not match the rest of the interior. The rear seat is in pretty good shape, the passenger seat needs to be recovered. The headliner is there but has a rip and stain in it. The car has an A/C console but none of the A/C parts are present on the engine. The windows and locks all operate but not smoothly. You can lock and unlock the car (including the trunk and gas cap). There is auxiliary gauge cluster mounted on the passenger side shelf that includes another temperature gauge, oil pressure, volt meter, and a clock. From what I can tell, these all work. I don’t know if this was a dealer installed option or aftermarket but I have seen this cluster installed in other 2002s. It illuminates with the other dash lights. The car has an aftermarket Momo steering wheel. I’m not sure why one of the previous owners chose to spend his money on an audio system, but the car comes with a nice Pioneer head unit w/CD, Pioneer CD changer, MTX amplifier, and speaker box in the trunk. From what I have noticed it all works fine but doesn’t sound very good. I have not tested the CD changer. The car has its original retractable radio antenna on the driver’s A pillar which operates normally. The car has a clear Colorado title in my name. The registration on the car is not current, it expired in March. I was never required to get emissions on the car and it has never been tested while I have owned it. I would not recommend driving this car long distances without at least addressing the brakes and tires. I have tried to be as honest as possible. This car runs and drives but it is certainly a project with many problems that need to be addressed. If you are in the market for a 2002, you know that a restored example comes with a $20,000 or higher price tag. This one will sell for much less. This car gets many thumbs up going down the road and always attracts attention when I stop to get gas. In person inspection prior to purchase is encouraged. I am a long time BMWCCA member. The car is located in northern Colorado. There are 70+ high resolution pictures below:
